Yeah, ska came first. Mustard Plug is an amazing third wave band, though its old stuff still has two-tone roots, like Skank by Numbers. I'm not sure if Streetlight Manifesto is "fourth-wave" (if there such a thing)or if they're even ska at all. Either way Streetlight is by far one of the best bands around.

we're not in any phase, there's bands that do ska, skacore, and 3rd wave. Skacore is pretty much signature to the mighty mighty bosstones. Streetlight Manifesto is whats being called 4th wave (hence the name of the song, Riding The Fourth Wave). This time period isn't really too specific to any one type of ska. Ska has pretty much 3 principal things, brass (or a touch of woodwind), some instrument playing on the up/off beat, and usually a heavy bassline (though not always).
