trent reznor can thank prince in his direction of music. princes song the batdance 1989, influenced him to make the music he is making today. he heard and saw the video and thought he could do it better. he was right.
Chris Vrenna - Trent's sidekick even before NIN the early days!!! I dont think its as bad as the Slam Bamboo and sure it was the fucking 80's get over it enjoy and move on. God bless
Cocaine is a helluva drug. Seriously, who knows what crap Trent went through from this to NIN? Drugs, I'm sure. This is obviously the "day gig," so when he was able to get away and do his own thing free and clear, that's what he did. Just like Big Al Jourgensen. Although, the early Ministry stuff is legit, I don't care what anyone says. Never heard of the Exotic Birds.
@whysoblutube -It's crazy to hear Reznor play that Pop 1980's style music that was so popular back then, and then to see him progress to the hardcore, serious rock star he would become! I bet he looks at that back then and wants to throw up!! LOL
@stevebuscemi6 is right. you won't find me credited anywhere, but you have most certainly come into contact with my work. i'm a writer and have worked with many f500 companies to create their print collateral & web material. i used to be a ghost writer for vint cerf, one of the actual original "founders" of the internet. believe me, there is no credit in this biz, which is why you do it because you love it.
@stevebuscemi6 Kurt Cobain & I worked on the song Sliver. Originally were going to title it Silver. It was changed when they decided to write the script for the film Sliver for Sharon Stone. Stone starred in the movie Basic Instinct, another script I supplied ideas for. The origin of the movie started with the '45 film Scarlet Street. The movie poster shows a girl under a lamp post. Kurt ref to this in journal "Lili Marleen" (girl under lamp post). INXS does in a music vid film in Czech
@stevebuscemi6 I'm not trying to convince anyone. Just stating facts. Most artists release info to different sites or to the tabloids and the tabloid internet sites, their fan pages, twitter, etc.
@stevebuscemi6 Steve, these people are indeed ligitimate. I know both Boddahism and sixdegreesofgina personally. I actually helped these people get into their careers as a personal counselor while they were growing up. I too helped invent the internet, I found Lady Gaga, and even created a time machine once but destroyed it because it would be detrimental to humanity. Someday if I ever stop BSing on the internet I might invent something else, but not right now...
I met Trent right after the release of the Aug '85 film Real Genius starring Val Kilmer. He had not seen the movie yet and I quoted some of it that I thougth was funny. (After Val Kilmer’s character Chris makes a pass at Deborah Foreman’s character she replies) Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis? He thought the logo NIN would look better than SIS and Nine Inch Nails was born that day
i don't get why everyone is saying trent was a scene hopper. think about it. from this point in 1985 to when pretty hate machine came out, it would of been 4 years. 4-5 years ago, i was a prep wanna-be who listened to HSM and hannah montana, and wore no makeup. go to now. 2011. i listen to rock n roll, metal, etc. and religiously wear black, makeup and my leather jacket. does that make me a scene hopper? no. do i even have a scene? no. it was just a change in aesthetics, for both trent and me.
Embarrassing? I think it's awesome to see people as they were when they were younger, BECAUSE of the changes they go through. Anyone who thinks that the fact they guy changed, musically, and as a person (funnily enough, time DOES that) is weird in any way really needs a reality check. I love Nine Inch Nails, but I don't think seeing this is shocking. It does make me curious about this bands music though.
hahahaha....12 years after this PILE OF GAY SHIT trent has the "balls" of trashing pearl jam or soundgarden for being....uhmm...commercial? gtfo trent...SERIOUSLY

HA HA HA! I'm laughing so hard. Is that a fucking lisp?! Braces on his teeth?? I also like this line from the announcer the best: "A technique known as sampling." Oh how the world has changed in 26 years. O_o SMH.
I wonder if he did heroin back then, he was supposedly pretty bad on it during the start of NIN all the way to The Downward Spiral. Though I haven't checked the facts so I could be wrong, I was just always curious about his addiction.
@Mafila the whole "oh fuck me...im in pain" thing looks fake to me...cause look at him here...i mean..wtf? he was just in another stupid ass new wave 80s band openning for culture club back then...i think trent rode the "angst" wave of the 90s imo....good albums though
Wow, so basically Trent's whole industrial goth look in the 90s was total bullshit marketing. Reminds me of Alice in Chains when they were Alice in Chainz and Layne Staley was a glammy big haired singer calling himself "Candy" Layne. LOL.
@peterp21 Amazingly enough, people change. And musicians are people. I know, personally, I used to be a wannabe goth, metal head, emo, scene kid... Whatever... But know I'm a completely different person in some aspects than I was back in jr high and highschool. I know my style of dress and clothing and the music I listened to has changed as well as parts of my personality. Trent just went from this kind of music to the industrial stuff NIN was as time passed and he changed.
@Novacoma If you ask me, Skinny Puppy went downhill big time after one of their cds were released in 1996.
As for NIN? I think that they truly went downhill post the fragile album. I hate them so much now that I will never ever listen to their future work, that cd that they made entitled "With Teeth" is the straw that really broke the camel's back in my case.
No he wasn't. It's just bullshit being spread. And as I said if he can do better then go ahead. Stop siting on the sidelines like you're a musician of his caliber when you're not. All these punks who pride themselves with nit selling out. You know what go live under a bridge with your alcohol and complain about someone who sold out and made a life for themselves. You guys are punks coz your dead weight in this world and should be excecuted for animal fodder
@stevebuscemi6 You don't know how close you actually are. Trent was part of the group of artists I hung around with and who came up with the Harry Potter series and with Twilight. We worked on many book, songs, and movie scripts from 1983. We used them as a venue for the songs we wrote.
@stevebuscemi6 I was discovered by Joe Elliott of Def Leppard at the age of 15 in 1983. Over the years I worked on many films starting from the sketching out the script, this includes Top Gun with Tom Cruise, Crocodile Dundee with INXS. Egyptian movie producer Dodi Fayed (Chariots of Fire) came to meet me as did Michael Jackson (who I wrote songs for) brought his friend Steven Spielberg. This also includes Titanic as well. Rowlings was in financial trouble, they helped her with my ideas.
@stevebuscemi6 Do you have any idea how many artists do not get public credit for their work? If INXS had not released that they invested in the movie or supplied a song to the film Crocodile Dundee, you would not know they had anything to do with the movie. In fact, they basically gave the ideas to Paul Hogan who took credit for writing the script. Most do not know that Def Leppard and others (including me) were behind the movie Pretty Woman and Steel Magnolias. Who needs IMDB?
Countingdown27. You don't know your mouth from your asshole. Stop spreading bullshit. If you've heard any of his interviews you will know he didn't. And if you are so much better then prove it.
@countingdown27 Everyone has sold out at least once in their lifetime. Besides, TRENT IS INDEPENDENT NOW. He does not use adverts, he gives out some of his music free, and gives reasons for us to buy his music. At one point he told everyone to torrent is music cause of his record label overpricing his music. Well he might have been selling out back in the day, once he got mainstream attention he did not like it. At this point he is just really good a business and not cheating people for money.
Awwww, look how adorable he is. :3 He seemed pretty cheerful before his soul was crushed by the weight of his own depression. We've all been there. Oh wait... not everyone has felt the weight of an over baring life smothering their will to live? Well some of us have. :D Regardless of any of that, I could just pinch his cheeks. x3
@hehfilms u r absolutely right !!! Trent even said (interview for Rolling Stone magazine) that he was under huge influence of Depeche Mode and their music =)
where would the world be if trent didn't get irritated and depressed!?!? we would be left without the most talented artist in ...well ...decades haha..seriously...
Aw, I was hoping his band were totally awful, but as far as synth pop goes he seemed pretty cool for the time. It's interesting how the subtext of this feature seemed to be whether electronic music was as valid an artform as more organic forms of music, since later on Reznor arguably blurred the lines between the two considerably.
I love Trent Reznor, and I was born in 1985, and have always enjoyed listening to 80's synth-pop, so this is interesting to watch. I couldn't help but let out a chuckle when the reporter talked about The Exotic Birds getting their big musical break opening for Culture Club. Retrospectively, the idea of Reznor preceding Boy George on stage is hilarious to me.
This sucks!Proof glory seekers do it for fame and money;I'm this way this week and that way next;whatever to get noticed not really sticking to your guns;this is why tech music fails so much because it's all about trend capping and band wagon rides hopefully to their top compromising the music for the promotion the whole time.At least in rock and metal and even jazz the bands are true to the fans and to themselves a lot.
@blitzspeer Spoken like someone who probably doesn't pursue music as a profession, and never will. Don't hate on technological music, every genre has imitators and phony celebrities. You should take a class in music history, then another in music business and marketing, so you can reread your statement and realize how full of it you are. Every artist that you have professionally mastered and pressed discs of (assuming you actually buy music) is a 'glory seeker' on some level. Get real man.
@blitzspeer Sorry, you're wrong on this one - in the little clip of a song at the end there, you can clearly hear the Depeche Mode influence. And look what happened afterwards. It's just an artist developing and changing. End of.
i worked at a club in Detroit called St Andrews. I remember when NIN would pull up in a white van and unload all their gear & lights and blow it out!!
i worked at a club in Detroit called St Andrews. I remember when NIN would pull up in a white van and unload all their gear & lights and blow it out!!
Cleveland Rocks! (and nice Polka reference). Off to see the Drums now in Hong Kong 2011.....for more inspiring music. NIN/Exotic Birds: Rock On.. :-) (OK, Slam Bam Boo, Too) Tony
exotic birds were about to travel around the U.S. opening for the Cars, hoping that it would skyrocket their popularity, however trent decided to go solo for some weird reason. lucky him. . .
Always knew he was a nerd he just hadn't hurt himself again to see if he still felt yet.Don't you love people who image shift like the turning of a wheel.
@blitzspeer Not sure how old you are, but chances are you're different than you were ten years ago....did you "image shift"? Or did your life experiences / interactions change how you see yourself, others, the world, etc? People who do not change as they live life are people who aren't living much of a life at all.

It's funny that he made synthpop first, and then industrial.

staininirvana 7 months ago 4

This sucks!Proof glory seekers do it for fame and money;I'm this way this week and that way next;whatever to get noticed not really sticking to your guns;this is why tech music fails so much because it's all about trend capping and band wagon rides hopefully to their top compromising the music for the promotion the whole time.At least in rock and metal and even jazz the bands are true to the fans and to themselves a lot.
blitzspeer 8 months ago
@blitzspeer Hmm. Can you back that statement up?
monkeytube138 7 months ago
@blitzspeer Spoken like someone who probably doesn't pursue music as a profession, and never will. Don't hate on technological music, every genre has imitators and phony celebrities. You should take a class in music history, then another in music business and marketing, so you can reread your statement and realize how full of it you are. Every artist that you have professionally mastered and pressed discs of (assuming you actually buy music) is a 'glory seeker' on some level. Get real man.
ChrisdB808 7 months ago 2
@blitzspeer you clearly do not listen to Nine Inch Nails
psorgatz 7 months ago
@blitzspeer Sorry, you're wrong on this one - in the little clip of a song at the end there, you can clearly hear the Depeche Mode influence. And look what happened afterwards. It's just an artist developing and changing. End of.

nin should cover this song and release it on a thumb drive...

i worked at a club in Detroit called St Andrews. I remember when NIN would pull up in a white van and unload all their gear & lights and blow it out!!

LOL. Exotic Birds > NIN. Reznor sold out.
The truth is that if you could see anybody past a certain age back in the eighties, you'd have trouble taking them seriously now.
Basically, EVERYBODY looked like they were in Flock of Seagulls.

Always knew he was a nerd he just hadn't hurt himself again to see if he still felt yet.Don't you love people who image shift like the turning of a wheel.
blitzspeer 10 months ago
@blitzspeer Not sure how old you are, but chances are you're different than you were ten years ago....did you "image shift"? Or did your life experiences / interactions change how you see yourself, others, the world, etc? People who do not change as they live life are people who aren't living much of a life at all.
