I would have loved to see Hagler use that same come forward style he used against Hearns against Michael Spinks at 175. Duran, Leonard, Hearns all moved up 13 pounds to challenge Hagler....How about Hagler do the same....
You MAD Ray used his legs. Thats because he was a welterweight and not as stong. Lets see Hagler vs Spinks.....Then he would have understood why SRL boxed him.....BIGGER MAN....Of course you cant go toe to toe. Thats there natural weight
147 pound Ray Leonard at his peak was knocking cats out. You sure you guys watch boxing. Ray actually fought flat footed a lot at 147,
Again...lets see Hagler move up to 175 and fight toe to toe. Michael Spinks would have knocked his ass out. SRL boxed because he is naturally smaller and not naturally 160
Uneducated boxing fans. Ray was a welterweight who had a 5 year layoff. Hagler was 160 pounds and active. Lets see Marvin Hagler move up 13 pounds and challenge Michael Spinks and go toe to toe. We never found out because Marvin only fought blown up 147 pounders.
What idiot would stand there and allow a man like Hagler to punch him. Whether you agree with the style or not, "running" and "holding" are sound defensive strategies. The objective is to hit him more than he hits you, period!! Sugar Ray showed he was a BRILLIANT tactician in this FIGHT!! He managed to avoid Hagler's best shots for the better of 15 rounds AND land more point scoring punches. That's what boxing is!!
they all "hagler, ray, hearns and duran" ducked mike mcallum donald curry made the mistake of fighting mcallum he got knocked out roy jones fought mcallum who was in his forties and could only beat him on points could hagler, ray, hearns, duran at 40 fight jones in his peak and finish the fight ?
How do you allow a smaller man to continually tie you up? Hagler needed to get brutal in there, and that is what Ray didn't allow him to do. Its not running, Ray is keeping Marvin off balance with movement. What do you expect a smaller man to do?
With those two wins along with his undefeated record he showed he's still p4p as well. Eg if he retired again and comes back in 2 years he can't say hes still p4p. Boxing doesnt wait for you. But because he came back after only 1 year and showed that he still has it i believe he deserves p4p. But pacquiao also earned it when he was gone, which is why in my eyes the fight has to happen next year for sure.
@Daputaka As a bonus....don't fight Aaron Pryor (cuz he'll kick your ass - aviod him at any cost) and don't give rematches. Sugar "Gay" Leonard....Floyd "Gayweather" one in the same.
@Daputaka Leonard was groomed by the networks from the Olympics thru his pro career. He was the commercialized “cash cow.” He got the benefit of the “early stoppages” – the late round 10 second “flurries” & incisive “holding” (like in the Hagler fight). In meaningful fights; (Fought only 15 times) from 1979 to 1997 - Leonard was only 7-3-1. Hardly Hall of Fame numbers. The biggest fraud in boxing; overrated. Same thing with Oscar De La Hoto. Avioded Aaron Pryor his whole career.
@41ofus it called boxing chump u step in the stop hating sugar ray is in the hall of fame because he was a great boxer he stayed in the game but many boxers made that mistake
@Davidcharles8 Your blinded by the Sugar Man; you've your tongue so far up his pie hole; that Gay Leonard's balls are covering your eyes, and you can't see him for the fraud that he was and still is, my poor friend.
@Davidcharles8 u dont shit about boxing bama dude and juding by your comments thats not your only issue iam not saying he was the greatest boxer of all time because he is not but i do think he is worthy of the hall of fame chump so get right
@41ofus it called boxing chump u step in the ring stop hating sugar ray is in the hall of fame because he was a great boxer he stayed in the game but many boxers made that mistake
@41ofus it called boxing chump u step in the ring stop hating sugar ray is in the hall of fame because he was a great boxer he stayed in the game to long but many boxers made that mistake
@41ofus it called boxing chump u step in the ring stop hating sugar ray is in the hall of fame because he was a great boxer he stayed in the game to long but many boxers made that mistake hagler was a great fighter he used the wrong strategy and lost sugar ray was out of boxing for 5 years hagler should have knocked him out and not left up to the judges
@41ofus What was so meaningful about Norris, or Camacho? I'd like to think that Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and Benitez were meaningful fights. and how could you fight 15 times and be 7-3-1? that only adds up to 11. excessive holding? I'll give you that against Hagler, but who else did Leonard hold?
@kingq01 Your blinded by the Sugar Man; you've your tongue so far up his pie hole; that Gay Leonard's balls are covering your eyes, and you can't see him for the fraud that he was and still is, my poor friend.
@41ofus Now you want to have a homo-sexual conversation with me, because your debate is not persuasive. I don't get into all that sort of talk. You getting on youtube discussing men's private parts, homosexual activites, and attacking me with disrespectful comments does nothing, but show what type of character you are. How could you call someone Gay, and you're talking about tongues in men's pie holes, and about their balls?
@kingq01 Okay, Leonard beat Benitez, never gave him a rematch, beat Duran twice (didn't him a rematch till 9 years later), beat Hearns (lost the rematch, which he gave him 8 years later) beat Hagler (I say he lost the fight, never gave him a rematch)...who else did de beat? Leonard has the least fight of any hall of fame fighter. He won 3 big fights, but that doesn't make him a Hall of Fame fighter.
@41ofus Although you are not worth debating, I'll still address your last post. Leonard is a gold medalist, 1st ever 5 time champion, beat every champ or #1 contender of his era in his division, Other than his last 2 fights had only 1 loss to a man (Duran one of the greatest fighters who ever lived) who he made quit in the rematch. That is why he is a Hall of Famer.
Its obvious that you hate SRL, so you want to discredit him. Of course you think he lost to Hagler. You are a bias hater.
@41ofus Aaron Pryor was an out-of-control brawler who used illegal substances during fights to enhance his performance. CHEATER. Pryor lacked fundamental boxing skills, and unable to adjust. Only thing special about Pryor was, he could beat Arguello. If Leonard avoid him, so did Hagler, Hearns, and Duran.
Why do people always start talking about what wasn't a good idea after a fight? At the time of the fight I never heard anyone say Haglers gonna lose, becuse he is caving in to all Leonards demands. They were all like Leonard doesn't stand a chance. I don't know what fight you were watching, but I scored in favor of Leonard 7rds. to 4rds and 1 even 116-113.
i think hagler loss cause he was being cocky fighting in the orthodox style when he's way better as a southpaw thats the only reason he loss he still barely loss by split decision
ray leonrd is a big fucked up fake asshole. he's never seen a camera he didn't like. he thinks so highly of himself. he's just an average boxer. fuck him
Leonard DID NOT DO ENOUGH to snatch Hagler's title. To beat the champ, show your dominance. As a challenger, be aggressive because you are the one that goes after the title. Hagler showed the aggression of a champ.
@Daputaka, I can't stand that absolute bull shit view. It's a load of fucking shite. If you win a boxing match, you win it. Simple as that. You don't have to win by a more convincing margin just because you're the challenger. So if Hagler had won on a razor thin verdict that would have been ok, but not for Leonard? How's that fair? Anyway, it's just a hoary old myth that guys such as Sullivan, Johnson and Corbett used when they were bellyaching about losing by decision.
Your comment is full of $hit too. Do you ever know what is the OBJECTIVE of Boxing? To knock your opponent COLD. Did you ever saw that in Leonard? WT...
@cfcafro94 I Disagree. WHY do then that a boxer loses automatically if he gets knocked out even if he is ahead on points? Is that then the objective - "TO HIT AND NOT GET HIT"???
@Daputaka look the sport is called boxing, to box someone, the sweet science, is to hit them hard and not get hit in return, the sport isnt called knockout is it, its called boxing, if the aim of the game was to knock the other person out to win, it would be called knockout, but its not!
@cfcafro94 Why do boxers hit their opponent? They must be penalized if they seriously hurt the opponent if the objective is only to hit and not to knock out. Why do we ever count the KO records of historic boxers? We must count then how many times they hit and not get hit. Is that your stand?
Sweet Science is NOT true. Sweet ART is more fitting since boxing is not a Science. Do you ever know the definition of Science?
@Daputaka look youve never boxed so whats the point in this, everyone knows you dont go looking for the knockout, you box and the knockout comes, you can barely speak english anyway so just leave pronto
@cfcafro94 Whether I boxed or not, it does not matter. That's the way I see it. You can also move forward and avoid being hit, right? There are lateral movements. Moving backwards to avoid getting hit is not entertaining to me. That was a gift decision for Leonard. I cannot see in him the essence of a challenger against the champ.
@41ofus The objective of boxing is to hit your opponent more than he hits you. Wich makes Leonard the better boxer in this match, regardless of what you think of him and the rest of his carreer. Deal with it.
@seblasian Some will disagree and say the objective is to HURT your opponent more than he hurts you. Which, in hitting him more, can be the same thing. But not always.
@seblasian the object of boxing is to crack that nut. ie impose your will on the opponent. i dont even care if i knock em out as long as i see the pride in their eyes vanish. oh yea 1 more thing you cant score a fight you werent at. its just to hard to tell whos hitting harder and etc on tv.
@iljn1988 Leonard is a fucken runner that holds all fight long. That the problem I have. Sugar Gay is not throw back fighter; he's not to be confused with Sugar Ray Robinson, or Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong. C'mon Man the guy was terribly overrated. Hagler was the champion and Leonard did nothing take the crown, unless you call excessive running and holding boxing?
@41ofus, you're claiming that Leonard was a runner, but you then heap praise on Pep who was one of the most drastically defensive fighters ever, who sometimes won doing exactly what Leonard did here. Why is it ok for him, but not Leonard? This fight was close, could go either way. Hagler wasn't "robbed" and nor would Leonard have been if it had gone the other way. As for being overrated, how many other fighters hold wins over four men of Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler's calibre? Not many.
@iljn1988 Pep was defensive, he didn't run and hold his ass off like Leonard. You can't see through the fraud that Leonard was. He held you in his spell. I for one, didn't fall for his, homo flurries at the end of the round; clowning around the ring like a dip-shit, ducking fighters and refusing rematches (unless he lost); hugging the fuck out of his opponents (like if he was on a date with them) and running as if he were being hunted. There's nothing Championship about Sugar "Gay" Leonard.
@41ofus, look mate, there's no point debating with you because you're clearly not objective. The childish 'Sugar Gay Leonard' and 'Runner' show that. So I'll leave you with this; again I ask, how many fighters across history can boast wins against four men of Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler's quality? Was Leonard being 'gay' when he roared back to go toe-to-toe with Hearns, the hardest hitting Welterweight of the era, and knock him out? You may not like him, but to deny his talent is pathetic.
@41ofus Pep's first opponent was 134lbs, and his biggest opponent was 140. Pep has never been under 127 never over 136, so why would he have to hold?
You guys have got to bitter about SRL beating Hagler, because I don't hear any complaining about how Hearns held Ray for dear life in their 2nd fight. All I hear is how Leonard was awarded an unfair draw. Ray tied Marv up, he didn't hold on because he was hurt and ready to go.
Leonard ran too much and din't throw anywhere near enough punches to become the champ. Hagler forced the issue the whole fight and landed cleaner, crisper punches. Boxing legend!
@babymilo - there's a big difference between the two. Mayweather moves but is ALWAYS dropping that heavy jab to the body and head, mixing in left hooks, then later in the fight (around the 3-4th round) he starts leading with right hands. Mayweather is much more AGGRESIVE in his fights. But hagler is a natural at 158 so I done entirely blame Leonard for running.
@babymilo - I think this is a totally different style than mayweathers. It seems to me that Leonard is really frightened of haglers power. Mayweather moves but is always stinging his opponents with straight jabs to the body and head while he moves, and then he will occasionally drop the left hook, and later start mixing in right hand leads. Similar but vastly different.
This Is Exactly What Mayweather Does.. I Agree With "p4pj1" This Is Similar To What Mayweather Is Guna Do To Pacquiao When They Meet..... Ya many of you will call it "running" or he's boring, or just talk shyt about Mayweather Jr, but real boxing fans appreciate the Beauty Of the "SWEET SCIENCE" Anybody agree?
once a boxer makes his opponent loses his cool they pretty much already lost you cant be a boxer and a hot head ! hagler is a fighter not a boxer .a fighter looks to brawl and a boxer on the other hand knows the name of the GAME" IS TO HIT AND NOT BE HIT"that's why sugar keeps moving after he throws hes shots ,he gets out of the way!!
Hagler spent his entire career trying to lure smaller men into the ring to fight him and when the last of the small men got into the ring he got owned in a fight that will forever haunt his legacy.
If he had gotten beat by Hearns then it still would have been an embarrassment but atleast Hearns was active and close to his prime,Leonard was a good five years past his prime with only one fight in five years.
the Leonard of 87 would never have beaten the monzons and hopkins but he beat hagler
Thought Leonard out-witted Hagler and certainly beat Hagler to the punch to land the cleaner shots in the 2nd! If you wanted to give a round to Hagler you could have gave the 3rd to him but it was really close. I gave it to Hagler because I thought Leonards legs were busier than his fist... 2-1 for Leonard thus far!
Leonard boxed like a little bitch this fight with that flurry bullshit. You can't take someone's title just by dancing around the ring, trying to look pretty...Hagler won this fight
pending on when u r talking about, late in his career, yea, they were being generous...probably saying "sorry for being jerks to you Ali all those years, we make it up to u by giving you fights" in his early career he was great because fighters bak then didnt no u were allowed to move ur head lol
Sugar Ray, was boring for the most, made me dizzy, reminded me of Zeberdy from the Magic roundabout, bet the Camera loved following SRL must have a plastic neck.. Hagler screwed himself the first couple have rounds, cost him the fight at the end. Show boating is boring 24/7.
ali is what i boxing , sugar ray is faken boxing and just showing off and running . watch ali vs liston , ali vs foreman , ali vs frizer . srl is a wanna be ali .
And leonard didn't run when he boxed. Its called sticking and moving. What sense does it make to stand flat footed and throw when you have a speed, quickness and agility advantage? You suppose to use your strengths to your advantage. Sugar had speed, hagler had power. Would you ask hagler to dance instead of throwing power shots?
Those Leonard haters need to stop. Remember that sugar was not a brawler, his style was dancing. Yet he brawled with Duran the first fight and didn't get knocked out and was trading blow for blow. Remember that Duran is considered one of the greatest punchers in the history of boxing Asking Sugar to brawl is like asking Mike Tyson to dance, that's not his game.
Ray is a guy who gained full benefit of amateur notoriety and charisma when boxing was in need of a face for the sport. Not the greatest but a legend none the less, he marks a significant point in the history of boxings evolution.
And the Award for most Marathons in his career goes to SUGAR GAY LEONARD I swear he does not try to brawl wit nobody Why? O my bad cuz his chin is suspect I just can't understand how Hearns & Hagler could not KO this fag B-cuz he ran for his life against them But you guys are right Leonard is A Legend A Legend for running 12 rounds for an Easy pay day I fuckin hate Ray Leonard
@vasalike dude boxing is my fav combat sport, better then mma surely, higher skill level, i just find it funny everyone who dislikes certain fighters makes up funny names for them, dont take it to serious bro, r they ur man or some shit?
Hagler is originaly from my hood, boxing is in my blood i have 2 brothers (of 8) that were golden glove champs in New england back in the day....soooo sorry I'm so defensive i can't stand it when I hear shit spoken about true legends!!! Oh and I LOVE THE DIPLOMATS
I hate watching the Hagler ~ "Gay" Leonard fight. Leonard was awarded the "victory" because he finished the fight on his feet. He was running and holding the whole fight. Richard Steele (Leonard's butt buddy) never took a point away from Leonard, although he "warned" him about 50 times during the fight. And of course Leonard never gave Hagler a rematch.
@marcusarkane Sure did. On HBO during the recap interview. Someone needs to upload it, so people can stop saying Ray never offered Hagler a rematch. Hagler was like "I don't know, but not in Vegas for sure." I had it years ago, it was also on the Super Fight VHS tape .
@41ofus Everyone knew what Leonard was gonna do before the fight, noone was complaining. When Leonard whooped Hagler ass doing what everyone knew he was gonna do, then it was a problem. Did anyone expect Leonard to walk Hagler down, back him up, cut the ring off, and knock Marvin out? No. So what the problem?
@kingq01 Your definition of Leonard "whipping" Hagler's ass is pretty "short-sighted." If your talking about a track meet, pillow fight; or holding match; then Leonard did whip some ass. The problem is that Leonard had more production then pure boxing talent. He created the "illusion" that he was the 2nd coming of Ali, alot of people got caught up in his "razzle-dazzle" bull-shit. "Gay" Leonard's record 1977-1997 / 36 wins 3 losses 1 draw fought 2 fights per year. Hardly Hall of Fame numbers.
@41ofus Ali had 5 loses from 1960-1981 with a slightly lower KO% than Leonard. Leonard beat every champ from his era in any division he was in. He regained his title, something Duran, Hearns, or Hagler never did. Yeah he beat Hagler in this "PILLOW FIGHT" , so why are you bad mouthing Leonard? And how can you run, land more punches and win?
@kingq01 Leonard ducked Aaron Pryor - when Pryor moved up to Welterweight to fight Leonard - Leonard moved up to Jr Middle to avoid Pryor. Leonard never fought the type of competition that Ali fought - not even close. Besides the 25 bums Leonard initially fought to pad his record; he was just 11-4 at the end of his career (he lost to Hearns the second fight). And he would of been 10-5 because he surly didn't win the Hagler, unless you count running and excessively holding a sign good boxing.
@kingq01 Fact is Pryor called out Leonard and he also called out Hearn. Hagler and Duran were at the time out of his weight class and her never called them out. Pryor gave Hearns a pretty good beat-down as amature.
@41ofus Like I said earlier Aaron Pryor was an out-of-control brawler who used illegal substances during fights to enhance his performance. CHEATER. Pryor lacked fundamental boxing skills, and unable to adjust. Only thing special about Pryor was, he could beat Arguello. At what time was Duran out of Pryor's wt. class? Vs. Hearns ametuers, TH was barely 17, Anyway Pryor does not deserve mention.
@kingq01 leanord wudve lost to pac n floyd quite one sided- ly..khan wud outclass him,he wasnt that skillfull,he was 1 of those fighters who shined cos the style was very rare back then
@Ronz93 I think it is very skillful to move up and beat Hagler, to come from behind (needing basically a K.O.) to beat undefeated Hearns, and make Duran quit. Its Manny who is fighting in a era of no competition, and fighters past their prime. Manny is a ducker. He needs to fight Williams or Berto, because he clearly stated he doesn't fight for money.
Manny has fought everyone... clottey and cotto the most recent. He didn't have to fight clottey, he had lost to cotto, but he was dangerous and he fought him. Look at Paquiao's fights on wikipedia dude - he fought Barrera, Morales and Marquez twice each, and thrice on another - took on the greatest and best mexicans and beat them or avenged them.
As for this fight, I actually gave haggler rounds 1 and 3, ray is just grabbing and pushing, not landing much....
@gig3gig3 Williams, Berto, Mosley, Mayweather. Marquez was a draw and split, lost to Morales in 1st fight. None of the fighters Manny beat can beat any of the 4 I named, except Cotto over Mosley, but Cotto was K.O. ed before he fought Manny, and hadn't looked good any fight after his 1st K.O. loss. Manny is good, and very entertaining, but way over-hyped.
@SSTRICK19 I have no problem admitting Pac is just that great. I'm a Pac fan also, but Just watch how many people delete their accounts when Floyd beats Manny. All the people calling a great fighter: Ducker, KFC, GayWeather, Coward, Pussy, Cherry picker, and Runner are going to see Floyd pick Manny apart. How can you beat Floyd w/no physical or technical advantage? What weakness does he have, that will be exposed?
@kingq01 Never know whats going to happen. If floyd wins he wins. I'm not deleting my account. I know floyd has a better chance of winning. But they both have two arms two legs etc anything can happen on the night. I see what you see... iv never seen anyone be able to hit floyd flush and for 12 rounds. If manny can hit him he has a chance.. if not floyd wins ud. All i said is if he beats floyd... alot of people will eat their words.
@SSTRICK19 I agree. Anyone can win any fight, but I think if Floyd wins more people will eat their words. I don't have anything bad to say about Pacman, so the only words I would be eating (if Pac wins) are my oppinion of who I think would win, and I think Pac is over hyped if you're ranking him higher than Floyd.
@kingq01 You don't know for sure that he will pick him apart... even though he has done that to every opponent. The fight hasnt happened thats why i havent said floyd will get destroyed or manny will get destroyed. I only provide my honest opinion.
@kingq01 I think overall boxing skills floyd is better. Floyd is the best defensive fighter of all time pacquiao is one of the best offensively of this era. What they have done for the sport is pretty much equal. I see them both as p4p right now. When floyd retired boxing doesnt wait for you. Pacquiao earned the title. When floyd beat marqeuz and shane he showed that he still also p4p.
@kingq01 Two years ago Floyd was the best, now, he simply dont fight enough, while Pacman is cleaning up every division. You gotta FIGHT to be called the best.
@BringerOfTheTruth O.K. but since Floyd has returned they have both had only two fights. Floyd vs Marquez & Mosley, Manny vs Clottey & Margerito. So I don't see how Pacman is cleaning up EVERY DIVISION. Clottey lost to Margerito, Cotto, & Baldomir. Margerito got caught cheating, and got KOed in his last fight (how/why Margerito got a shot at the title I'll never know), and is suspended in boxing's most major cities. I think Floyd can & will beat Manny. That's where I stand. What are you saying?
@kingq01 He is not cleaning every division, but he is taking on some great names and dominating them. Also Floyd is too inactive in general..and he cant claim p4p title based on that...also when he WAS active he should have fought Cotto and Margarito when they were hot instead of letting other steal his thunder. Seems to me that Pacman simply fights whoever they put in front of him.
So only based on activity, in all fairness, Pac is #1 right now. If he cant beat Floyd is another question.
Floyd took a lay-off, but I think we all know Cotto has always been too slow for Floyd, and Margerito too hitable. Floyd has fought undefeated and seemingly invincible fighters (example: Corrales & Hatton). Manny has never done that. If Manny fights Berto, then I will believe he fights whoever.
However, I like Manny. I like his willingness to engage, and his fights are very entertaining.
Your drunk....Youtube Aaron Pryor vs Lennox Blackmoore post fight. Pryor admits Ray offered him 500,000 and Pryor turned it down. NO DEFENSE...Pryor gets knocked out by Ray. And you cant compare the Hagler fight against the Leonard Pryor would have fought. Hagler fought 30 year old SRL who was off 5 years. Pryor would have fought 147 pound 25 year old ACTIVE....SRL
Pryor barely beat a featherweight who was SLOW in Arguello
hell yeah they did rob hagler out of this fight leonard kept running like a b it ch and hagler block like all of his punches and everytime hagler goes to punch leonard leonard backs away so i think hagler would of beat his ass
In thet third round, Leonard style is so much alike that of Bernard Hopkins, throwing one or two punches and then clinching and the way he moves is just so much alike.
look how lenaerd is boxing circles around hagler. but now one boos are say he is a chicken. and he still wins. but wen floyd maywheather do it he is scared and is being a chicken. lol it's ovious they are hating on the man, and no one is on his level. are they jus don't like him, but that doesn't give no one the right like lary merchant who has never put on a pair of boxing glove to hate. the man has talent jus accept that.
man u right i dunno why maybe cuz leonard was like the goldenboy of his erea can get away with certain stuff remember leonard was a very smart guy at chosing when to fight hagler and duran got them at the right time. im not disin leonard i think he was a great fighter im just bein honest plus leonard chose the gloves they wore, the ring and how many rounds imagine if it went 15?
People often overlook the importance of the cornermen in this fight. If you were to switch Dundee and the Petronellis, Hagler probably wins. Hagler lost this fight because he fought righthanded the first two rounds and lost the first four. Terrible tactical error!
agreed...The Petronellis should have been on Hagler's ass, to stop pissing around orthodox and be level headed, cut off the ring. Hagler was not cutting off the ring enough, when he did, he would corner Leonard. Leonard out smarted him and got into Hagler's head. Not a hugely convincing win, but Leonard won nonetheless.
i agree with both points. Leonard made Hagler fight his fight and for the most part neutralized Haglers power by clinching once Hagler got within striking distance
i am a huge boxing fan nd every one is entitled to their own opinion...but, Leonard won this fight. Boxing isnt about standing there throwing bombs if Leonard did that he wouldve lost but he didn and he won so b**** on ppl...ppl love to do it lmao
Yes Leonard won. I'm a big Hagler fan, but looking objectively at this fight it's hard to argue against Sugar Ray. Still, prime for prime at MW Hagler takes this one convincingly.
Scoring this fight...

We never found out because Marvin only fought blown up 147 pounders.
bscottdp 8 months ago
Hagler was naturally 160. Ray retired in 1982 as a 147 pounder.
He comes out of retirement to fight Hagler at 160...NUFF SAID

What idiot would stand there and allow a man like Hagler to punch him. Whether you agree with the style or not, "running" and "holding" are sound defensive strategies. Leonard was the greatest ducker of all time. of maybe PBF.
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka The greatest ducker fought four of the greatest fighters of all-time. What logic brings you to the conclusion that Ray was a ducker.
kingq01 1 year ago
How do you allow a smaller man to continually tie you up? Hagler needed to get brutal in there, and that is what Ray didn't allow him to do. Its not running, Ray is keeping Marvin off balance with movement. What do you expect a smaller man to do?

Smart boxing.....Floyd would beat Pac....

@41ofus
Hagler clearly said that the reason for his retirement was the refusal of Leonard for a rematch.
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka Leonard was groomed by the networks from the Olympics thru his pro career. He was the commercialized “cash cow.” He got the benefit of the “early stoppages” – the late round 10 second “flurries” & incisive “holding” (like in the Hagler fight). In meaningful fights; (Fought only 15 times) from 1979 to 1997 - Leonard was only 7-3-1. Hardly Hall of Fame numbers. The biggest fraud in boxing; overrated. Same thing with Oscar De La Hoto. Avioded Aaron Pryor his whole career.

@41ofus What was so meaningful about Norris, or Camacho? I'd like to think that Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and Benitez were meaningful fights. and how could you fight 15 times and be 7-3-1? that only adds up to 11. excessive holding? I'll give you that against Hagler, but who else did Leonard hold?
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 (Fought only 15 times from 1979 to 1997) Leonard was only 7-3-1 in his last 11 fights.
41ofus 1 year ago
@41ofus The reason SRL only had 11 fights over 18 years is because he had earned more than any fighter ever. No need to cause unnecessary damage.
Now if you look at any of the greatest fighters last 11 fights, their record is most likely not going to reflect their career.

@41ofus Now you want to have a homo-sexual conversation with me, because your debate is not persuasive. I don't get into all that sort of talk. You getting on youtube discussing men's private parts, homosexual activites, and attacking me with disrespectful comments does nothing, but show what type of character you are. How could you call someone Gay, and you're talking about tongues in men's pie holes, and about their balls?
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 Okay, Leonard beat Benitez, never gave him a rematch, beat Duran twice (didn't him a rematch till 9 years later), beat Hearns (lost the rematch, which he gave him 8 years later) beat Hagler (I say he lost the fight, never gave him a rematch)...who else did de beat? Leonard has the least fight of any hall of fame fighter. He won 3 big fights, but that doesn't make him a Hall of Fame fighter.
41ofus 1 year ago

Leonard DID NOT DO ENOUGH to snatch Hagler's title. To beat the champ, show your dominance. As a challenger, be aggressive because you are the one that goes after the title. Hagler showed the aggression of a champ.
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka, I can't stand that absolute bull shit view. It's a load of fucking shite. If you win a boxing match, you win it. Simple as that. You don't have to win by a more convincing margin just because you're the challenger. So if Hagler had won on a razor thin verdict that would have been ok, but not for Leonard? How's that fair? Anyway, it's just a hoary old myth that guys such as Sullivan, Johnson and Corbett used when they were bellyaching about losing by decision.

Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka wrong the objective of boxing is to hit and not get hit, score points nad win fights!
cfcafro94 1 year ago
@cfcafro94 I Disagree. WHY do then that a boxer loses automatically if he gets knocked out even if he is ahead on points? Is that then the objective - "TO HIT AND NOT GET HIT"???
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka look the sport is called boxing, to box someone, the sweet science, is to hit them hard and not get hit in return, the sport isnt called knockout is it, its called boxing, if the aim of the game was to knock the other person out to win, it would be called knockout, but its not!
cfcafro94 1 year ago
@cfcafro94 Why do boxers hit their opponent? They must be penalized if they seriously hurt the opponent if the objective is only to hit and not to knock out. Why do we ever count the KO records of historic boxers? We must count then how many times they hit and not get hit. Is that your stand?
Sweet Science is NOT true. Sweet ART is more fitting since boxing is not a Science. Do you ever know the definition of Science?
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka look youve never boxed so whats the point in this, everyone knows you dont go looking for the knockout, you box and the knockout comes, you can barely speak english anyway so just leave pronto
cfcafro94 1 year ago
@cfcafro94 Whether I boxed or not, it does not matter. That's the way I see it. You can also move forward and avoid being hit, right? There are lateral movements. Moving backwards to avoid getting hit is not entertaining to me. That was a gift decision for Leonard. I cannot see in him the essence of a challenger against the champ.
Daputaka 1 year ago
@Daputaka The objective of boxing is to hit and not get hit.

@iljn1988
Hagler can ran all-night too and NEVER get in contact with Leonard and retain his title. That should fit well by your principles. LOL
Daputaka 1 year ago
@iljn1988 Leonard is a fucken runner that holds all fight long. That the problem I have. Sugar Gay is not throw back fighter; he's not to be confused with Sugar Ray Robinson, or Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong. C'mon Man the guy was terribly overrated. Hagler was the champion and Leonard did nothing take the crown, unless you call excessive running and holding boxing?
41ofus 1 year ago
@41ofus, you're claiming that Leonard was a runner, but you then heap praise on Pep who was one of the most drastically defensive fighters ever, who sometimes won doing exactly what Leonard did here. Why is it ok for him, but not Leonard? This fight was close, could go either way. Hagler wasn't "robbed" and nor would Leonard have been if it had gone the other way. As for being overrated, how many other fighters hold wins over four men of Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler's calibre? Not many.
iljn1988 1 year ago
@iljn1988 Pep was defensive, he didn't run and hold his ass off like Leonard. You can't see through the fraud that Leonard was. He held you in his spell. I for one, didn't fall for his, homo flurries at the end of the round; clowning around the ring like a dip-shit, ducking fighters and refusing rematches (unless he lost); hugging the fuck out of his opponents (like if he was on a date with them) and running as if he were being hunted. There's nothing Championship about Sugar "Gay" Leonard.
41ofus 1 year ago
@41ofus, look mate, there's no point debating with you because you're clearly not objective. The childish 'Sugar Gay Leonard' and 'Runner' show that. So I'll leave you with this; again I ask, how many fighters across history can boast wins against four men of Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler's quality? Was Leonard being 'gay' when he roared back to go toe-to-toe with Hearns, the hardest hitting Welterweight of the era, and knock him out? You may not like him, but to deny his talent is pathetic.
iljn1988 1 year ago
@41ofus Pep's first opponent was 134lbs, and his biggest opponent was 140. Pep has never been under 127 never over 136, so why would he have to hold?
You guys have got to bitter about SRL beating Hagler, because I don't hear any complaining about how Hearns held Ray for dear life in their 2nd fight. All I hear is how Leonard was awarded an unfair draw. Ray tied Marv up, he didn't hold on because he was hurt and ready to go.

Hagler won
Leonard deceived the announcers and
judges with his theatrics.
You need boxers to announce and judge the fights. They know who's taking the real punishment.
Haglers style: The slower harder puncher
had to pressure leonard, take a few flurries to land that harder solid punch and and have Leonard back pedal and that is exactly what he did.
It was judged by dancing with the stars.
JohnPaul7771 2 years ago
@babymilo - there's a big difference between the two. Mayweather moves but is ALWAYS dropping that heavy jab to the body and head, mixing in left hooks, then later in the fight (around the 3-4th round) he starts leading with right hands. Mayweather is much more AGGRESIVE in his fights. But hagler is a natural at 158 so I done entirely blame Leonard for running.
Latenightactor 2 years ago
@babymilo - I think this is a totally different style than mayweathers. It seems to me that Leonard is really frightened of haglers power. Mayweather moves but is always stinging his opponents with straight jabs to the body and head while he moves, and then he will occasionally drop the left hook, and later start mixing in right hand leads. Similar but vastly different.

And leonard didn't run when he boxed. Its called sticking and moving. What sense does it make to stand flat footed and throw when you have a speed, quickness and agility advantage? You suppose to use your strengths to your advantage. Sugar had speed, hagler had power. Would you ask hagler to dance instead of throwing power shots?
gqsmooth1984 2 years ago 5
Those Leonard haters need to stop. Remember that sugar was not a brawler, his style was dancing. Yet he brawled with Duran the first fight and didn't get knocked out and was trading blow for blow. Remember that Duran is considered one of the greatest punchers in the history of boxing Asking Sugar to brawl is like asking Mike Tyson to dance, that's not his game.

No. So what the problem?
kingq01 1 year ago
41ofus 1 year ago
@41ofus Ali had 5 loses from 1960-1981 with a slightly lower KO% than Leonard. Leonard beat every champ from his era in any division he was in. He regained his title, something Duran, Hearns, or Hagler never did. Yeah he beat Hagler in this "PILLOW FIGHT" , so why are you bad mouthing Leonard? And how can you run, land more punches and win?
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 Leonard ducked Aaron Pryor - when Pryor moved up to Welterweight to fight Leonard - Leonard moved up to Jr Middle to avoid Pryor. Leonard never fought the type of competition that Ali fought - not even close. Besides the 25 bums Leonard initially fought to pad his record; he was just 11-4 at the end of his career (he lost to Hearns the second fight). And he would of been 10-5 because he surly didn't win the Hagler, unless you count running and excessively holding a sign good boxing.
41ofus 1 year ago
@41ofus If Leonard duck Pryor, so did Hagler, Hearns, and Duran.
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 Fact is Pryor called out Leonard and he also called out Hearn. Hagler and Duran were at the time out of his weight class and her never called them out. Pryor gave Hearns a pretty good beat-down as amature.

@41ofus Like I said earlier Aaron Pryor was an out-of-control brawler who used illegal substances during fights to enhance his performance. CHEATER. Ronz93 1 year ago
@Ronz93 I think it is very skillful to move up and beat Hagler, to come from behind (needing basically a K.O.) to beat undefeated Hearns, and make Duran quit. Its Manny who is fighting in a era of no competition, and fighters past their prime. Manny is a ducker. He needs to fight Williams or Berto, because he clearly stated he doesn't fight for money.
kingq01 1 year ago
Manny has fought everyone... clottey and cotto the most recent. He didn't have to fight clottey, he had lost to cotto, but he was dangerous and he fought him. Look at Paquiao's fights on wikipedia dude - he fought Barrera, Morales and Marquez twice each, and thrice on another - took on the greatest and best mexicans and beat them or avenged them.
As for this fight, I actually gave haggler rounds 1 and 3, ray is just grabbing and pushing, not landing much....
gig3gig3 1 year ago

What weakness does he have, that will be exposed?
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 Never know whats going to happen. If floyd wins he wins. I'm not deleting my account. I know floyd has a better chance of winning. But they both have two arms two legs etc anything can happen on the night. I see what you see... iv never seen anyone be able to hit floyd flush and for 12 rounds. If manny can hit him he has a chance.. if not floyd wins ud. All i said is if he beats floyd... alot of people will eat their words.
SSTRICK19 1 year ago
@SSTRICK19 I agree. Anyone can win any fight, but I think if Floyd wins more people will eat their words. kingq01 1 year ago

BringerOfTheTruth 1 year ago
@BringerOfTheTruth O.K. but since Floyd has returned they have both had only two fights. Floyd vs Marquez & Mosley, Manny vs Clottey & Margerito. So I don't see how Pacman is cleaning up EVERY DIVISION. Clottey lost to Margerito, Cotto, & Baldomir. Margerito got caught cheating, and got KOed in his last fight (how/why Margerito got a shot at the title I'll never know), and is suspended in boxing's most major cities. I think Floyd can & will beat Manny. That's where I stand. What are you saying?
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01 He is not cleaning every division, but he is taking on some great names and dominating them. Also Floyd is too inactive in general..and he cant claim p4p title based on that...also when he WAS active he should have fought Cotto and Margarito when they were hot instead of letting other steal his thunder. Seems to me that Pacman simply fights whoever they put in front of him.
So only based on activity, in all fairness, Pac is #1 right now. If he cant beat Floyd is another question.

@BringerOfTheTruth I agree with Manny's p4p ranking.

@kingq01 You might be right about that.

@41ofus Noone fought the competition that Ali fought, but Leonard fought all the greats from his era, besides cheating Pryor.

@kingq01 Pryor would knocked Sugar Gay the fuck out !!!

@41ofus

They robbed Hagler out of this fight.

Terrible tactical error!
matthroma 2 years ago
agreed...The Petronellis should have been on Hagler's ass, to stop pissing around orthodox and be level headed, cut off the ring. Hagler was not cutting off the ring enough, when he did, he would corner Leonard. Leonard out smarted him and got into Hagler's head. Not a hugely convincing win, but Leonard won nonetheless.
songnow 2 years ago
i agree with both points. Leonard made Hagler fight his fight and for the most part neutralized Haglers power by clinching once Hagler got within striking distance
sammybmore 2 years ago
agreed. don't know why they told him to do that...leonard would have been in real trouble if hagler had stayed lefty

i am a huge boxing fan nd every one is entitled to their own opinion...but, Leonard won this fight.
