The overwhelming majority of the greatest rockers of all time abused drugs and alcohol and still kicked ass. Peter got pissed that Gene and Paul were shamelessly hijacking more creative control of the band's material and as a result, stopped caring and stopped trying. Ace was just as pissed too and ended up leaving on his own later on for the same reason. Peter wasn't THAT out of control with his substance abuse. It was all in the timing. This was premeditated.
