I learned to play with my fathers clubs which he bought 2nd hand in the late 50's while studying at college. The woods & irons were late 40's. I had to reshaft the woods as they disintegrated but I used them until I turned 13 (playing off 3) and bought some second hand Wilson blades & persimmon woods (1980ish) I also carved my own driver head from a persimmon block and used that for a season (it was rubbish)
I still play with mizuno tp 9 blades although i do use modern driver.
@nikepumps I think you may have misunderstood me, I've not said hogan wasnt a great player or possibly the best. Because this video is hogan attempting to swing in slow motion rather than being filmed then shown in slow motion it misrepresents his technique. Look at older clips in real slow motion and their very different to a trained eye.
A trained eye would pay more attention to Hogan's concentration drill than anything else. It's more important to know what he saw driving the motion....than the result of that intention.
My misses came in and saw me watching in her words "whos this silly old guy swinging a club" and i thougth to myself if she only knew lol, i said oh some old hacker hehe...
Martinez, and what is this obvious lol ? There is not as much club face stability in this swing like lots of modern players. Unfortunately golfers have been conditioned into believing hogan had the greatest swing, probably by American sports journalists & alike. His swing relies totally on timing & rhythm, that is perhaps why he lost against Snead 4-0 in playoffs, breaks down under tension.
Enlighten this poor lost soul then...show me these modern swings with more clubface stability. I think you're either a crackhead or you're selling something.
@GOLFGURUJIM best ball striker ever. only an idiot would disagree. he would have his caddy shag a bucket of balls for him and never have to move. Your thought process seperates you from someone who is good at golf. Its not the perfect shots that define you, its the bad ones, and Hogan had less bad shots than any other player ever. He was in complete control of his game. Once he went 120/121 fairways or some number close to that. Saying it is timing and rythm is ignorant
@GOLFGURUJIM You sir are an idiot. Back then the technology of the clubs was such that you had to hit the driver solid every time instead of mishitting it today and winding up four yards short instead of 30.
Martinez, how are you basing your judgement that he swings it better than anybody else today ? Is it because that's what you have read somewhere ? I would say in his era possibly but not ever. I bet he could hit some of the shots tiger or many current players could.
My technology comment is merely pointing out that thanks to amazing hi speed camera technology we can see an actual swing slowed down & not a guy trying to slow his own swing down (with out camera wizardry) which will never truly r
Basing it on the obvious Jim. Why would I need to read about it...when we have clear footage. No one currently playing the tour swings it as good as Hogan did on this guys beach side lawn at what looks to be near 70 yrs of age.
Is someone treading on cats in the background ? Seriously bad attempt by a great golfer, but I guess without technology now available what else could he do !
@bunkerputt in this video hogan was asked to swing in slo motion what he felt like when he was playing. that move was exaggerated but was why he could lag the piss out of the club and beat everying. he called it the feeling of greatness, it the reason why he was the best
@skschwartz I'm sure that's what he thought he was doing, but in full-speed, that kind of swing is a spin-out flip that would release the club too early. In reality, he had a big lateral move towards the target that kept the club from releasing as it would if he had purely rotated from the transition. Also, I could be wrong, but I believe the "feeling of greatness" quote is attributed to Moe Norman. Thanks for your reply, though.
It is Ben Hogan. Like people have said before, its a home video of hogan when he was older. The swing is a slow motion drill he used to do, funny how waht he felt his swing should do was different in full speed.
IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME check out the whole video, then its pretty obvious its hogan: watch?v=34GOeyjr0Uw
slow motion as in Tai Chi, not real-time video slowed down slow-motion. this was a drill he practiced for decades to get all his positions. Try it sometime, not easy. Same thing musicians do, practice really slow and gradually speed it up. It reveals where things aren't quite moving the way they should - if your swing starts to feel good slow - it will roast when you crank it up.

This is Ben in his 70s showing a slow motion drill he would practice - like tai chi, and so things will look a bit different than full speed motion. He was practicing his positions which is why even at that age he could still pound a sweet drive.
The alexczervik guy is right, (not that I agree with his crudeness) the release in that portrayal was completly inacurate, as well as the start of the downswing. The beach is gorgeous though! Good job on that!
You idiot!!! it is him in his old age at one of his friends in their garden. he was demonstrating a shot in slow motion, u should act with more respect towards Ben Hogan!!
even in slo mo you cant do hogan this is pitiful effort check my lessons out at hitmanhawky and check out my swing looks alot like bens he taught me how to swing and thanks ben
That is Ben Hogan shit for brains. You don't know jackshit about the golf swing either. Saw it first time I saw your swing. You are such a poser. How does the release work again? Get a job.
Yeah, I love his swing in the full version of this video....I know he's past his prime by a long way but it's still as good or better than anyone else's swing I've seen.
Martinez

@125saito you're right, i wonder why he did that. Obviously Nicklaus saw the same thing and thought it was important, same kind of motion

This video proves that Hogan's swing was so good he could give a woman an orgasm just by swinging in slow motion.

This is Ben. This is from the Coleman video, where Ben hits a bunch of balls into the lake. They still have "the sound" when he hits them.
All you guys saying "it's not Ben" need to can it. People DO get older, you know. You won't always look or move the way you used to.

No I wouldn't DUCY. It's a secret. SHHHHHHHHH!
Cheers. :)
martinez19696 2 years ago
Correct.
When you know what to look for you can see it clearly, in any swing.
Hogan, Moe, Wright, Austin, Jones, Snead, Nicklaus & Knudson.
You won't find it in any modern pro swing, at least none that I've seen.
The ball has the same distance and trajectory every time. Shots hit the sweet spot in the sweet spot.
It produces huge power, leverage & lag and there is no hand release.
