  • As much as I usually dislike the 1910s, I gotta admit, the period sure had some great music and movies. Architecture wasn't too bad at the time either.

  • I swear I think this song is on the game "The Ship"

  • we have iPhone's and HD tv's...they should've had 5.1 surround sound system lol i don't even know what im talking about =p

  • United! United! United!

  • @StevenAbootmanWGA WEST HAM RULES!

  • It apears that you don't have the cylinder fully on the mandrel. You need the ream the cylinder.

  • @compukenny Cylinders are very fragile and cannot be 'reamed.' Also, cylinders often warp over time and go out-of-round and will only so far on the mandrel. Any attempt to seat it beyond just grabbing the mandrel will give you a very broken record.

  • Cylinders cannot be 'reamed' - they are fragile castings. Over time some cylinders warp and go out-of-round so you just push it onto the mandrel until it grabs. Anything more and you'll have a very broken record.

  • @jxoxnxnxy1492

I have reamed a number of cylinders over the years. Some are simply to far warped to succesfully ream.

Go to ebay and do a search for #280697041788

  • I remember hearing this song on the movie "Eight Men Out", only Ring Lardner (one of the characters) sang it in parody to show he thought the White Sox were throwing the 1919 World Series.

  • Thats is awsome

  • I share your interest in these phonographs, and have a few of my own. Love your show. Way cool...

  • Why was it not in sterio?

  • No one thought of the idea.

  • @19sept76 Are you serious?

  • ...playing only the quaint recordings gives the wrong impression of the period.

  • Have any old ragtime, Jazz, or Sophie Tucker songs? Playing only the quai t

  • I have this cylinder! However, it's only about 90 years old, circa 1919.

  • what is the plastic in the edison cylinders that are supposed to last a super long time?

  • @ultimatenerd22 Celluloid, backed by plaster. Well, it's not just the celluloid itself that accounts for the record's long life. This format employed a U-shaped groove that was played by a rounded point that came in contact with the entire groove surface -- thereby spreading the pressure over a wide area. Gramophone records employed a V-shaped groove with two small contact points on either side of the groove, accounting for much greater unit pressure and horrific wear.

  • @riqzster thanks

  • Thanks, now I have to go watch Green Street Hooligans again. United!!!

  • is it cd-rw? :D

  • you mean you don't have to repeatedly charge its battery to continue listening to music?

    amazing!

  • you probably shouldn't hold the outside of the cylinder, since that has the recording on it. You should hold it with your fingers inside so you won't ruin it.

  • WEST HAM!

  • can you play games on it

  • wtf is this?

  • Thanks for the awesome video. Finally, someone out there who cares about stuff I love. What ever happened to the idea that you can play music without any power and anywhere you want. Go figure.

  • that sounded awesome. that is true classic i have always wondered how those worked nice vid!

  • There's just something amazing about listening to music on that.

The Edison Cylinder Turntable is so stylish.

True craftsmanship like that is hardly seen in much of anything today.

I think art deco should be the standard for American architect again.

  • I love this song.

You should do a review of the Edison Phonograph itself

  • haha, It's pretty catchy though you must admit xD

  • wow your a fucking asshole

  • Man, if you don't have nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all.

  • dude in the vid is holding the record wrong

  • fantastic!

  • How is it that a 360 breaks after a year and a gameboy that is 18 years old and got hit by a grenade in the gulf war still work? How the hell does this thing work after 100 years and my Ipod breaks after 3?

  • @IdontlikeusingLOL

Because nowadays everything you buy is only intended to last until a newer model is on the market.

  • 'cause sadly, they dont make things like they used to...

  • all today they care about is quanity not quality

  • They should start selling these again.

  • I have no doubt that thing will still be functional long after my 360 fires up its it's RROD. And my PS3 for that matter. The real question is.. will my Sega Genesis still be functional in 100 years. ? That makes me think.. Maybe we should buy a 360 and just leave it boxed for 20 years. It'll be like a DeLorean sitting in your basement.

  • Except that the DeLorean is still very much functional compared to the 360.

  • i dont know why but i like this kind of music its calming

  • Amazing how are new technology only lasts a few years at best.

  • No, only stupid and useless technology lasts for a few years...

Like the Edison Cylinder...useless once someone put more than 5 minutes of thought and said "huh, I can put more information on a giant round disc and make it out of longer-lasting materials!".

Its like the paternoster: great idea for 3 seconds, until someone realized that having a constantly moving carriage that only holds 2 people really isn't a great idea compared to the elevator.

  • that's because a record player uses the exact same design and mechanics as the edison cylinder so all the hard work was already figured out. all they did was find something bigger to use.

when you think about it, this is an ingeneous design and far from stupid and useless.

plus, i think LarryM5 was referring to the fact that it's 100 years old and still works as aposed to all the things these days that break within a couple of years.

  • While I understand I am being a bit harsh on the very first recording technology....

The Edison Cylinder didn't last because it was released as the end-all device for playing back recording sound. The designers never went back to try and update it, and thought there was nothing else to do to improve it.

The gramophone designers didn't just "find something bigger to use", they increased sound quality and recording time.

  • Its like saying that just because it came out first, the LaserDisc was a wonderful idea...

Yeah, giant fragile disks that play back video and audio that was only slightly better than VHS quality...discs that sometimes had to be printed on both sides because of their designer's inability to think of and design any compression technologies, and released their device as a end-all upgrade from VHS...

No, LaserDiscs were stupid and proven useless VERY quickly.

  • Actually, the gramophone IS the update on the Edison Cylinder. If I compared this to video games (this is CGR after all) it'd be the equivalent of moving cartridges to discs. Yes, discs hold more data than cartridges, that's why that's all we use now but we didn't have the technology to use them back in the 70's.

Now consider this with the Edison Cylinder, although sound and storage space is "poor" it's an amazing invention completely from scratch and a building block for further advancements.

  • I never disagreed with you that the Gramophone was the "update" (though I'm hard pressed to find evidence to support or deny this seemingly logical claim) on the Cylinder...

I disagreed with your wording of how the new technology was developed...there was more to the gramophone than just "something bigger".

The Cylinder should be remembered as the pioneer of home audio technology, but also as a rushed idea, something that could have used a bit more work before public release.

  • ("Hard pressed" as in "I am being too lazy to look up this information on Google right now" ...sorry. And I should have done a bit more research on the paternoster before bringing it into the discussion. Personal transport elevators were around before the first paternoster was introduced....still a silly technology that should only be a memory, though. It doesn't allow for any handicapped, elderly, or pregnant passengers, due to its constant movement, and has very small carriages)

  • Ugh, do you realize that its nearly 3AM CST, and here we are on the internet discussing/arguing about a 100 year old technology?

Ah, internet...I love and hate thee

  • but its later somewhere else.

  • Because they both work a similar way. Basically just a needle moving along bumps.

You're right, I didn't word it right. I basically meant to say what just said.

I don't know if it should be remembered as a "rushed idea" because I don't know the history of how it was made. He may have spent a couple of weekends on it and thought "good enough", or he could've spent years on it and did all he could. I don't know. I still say however, that it's an ingenious design and far from "stupid and useless"

  • CRT Televisions are a rushed idea! See how inneficient they are compared to the new OLED, LCD, And Plasma screen televisions! So obviously it is a rushed idea. (Sarcasm)

  • What late technology lasts long? Your sentence is unlogical, as technologys nature is to evolve, therefore there is no absolute chance of a technology that is time-proof. The elevator has come a long way, though.. but think of cameras, analogue cameras still take much better shots than MOST of digital ones.. but the complexity of development made them useless. Technology changes to make us do less things, and put less effort.

  • WEST HAM

  • This one reminder of the old Tom and jerry cartoons. Nice sound.

  • There should be death metal on this!

  • There actually is a rock version to this from the cokney rejects

  • skinheeeeeeead

  • This method of storing analogue sound actually has an advantage over record discs: sound quality always stays constant. On records, it decreases the more the needle moves to the center of the record.

  • Both formats degrade quickly, the machines are prone to many failures...

And the cylinders are VERY fragile. There's a video circulating the 'tubes of a cylinder collector who drops an original on the floor from a simple distance of 4 feet...it shatters like glass.

  • yea thats when chris pirllo was playing on the screen savors, and they had this old dude and he droped it

  • The poor bastard's hands were shaking so much...I would have asked him to set it down before he dropped it.

It would have seemed rude, but considering the guy's life was almost ALL ABOUT these things...*shrug*

  • You are totally missing the point of my post. I don't describe the physical degradation of sound by a scratching needle. I describe the decline in sound on a record disc because the grooves on the inner circles of the disc are more compressed than the grooves on the outer circles. Google "Constant Angular Velocity" to understand what I actually mean, before playing the smart guy.

  • A window to the past.

  • This is actually pretty cool...

  • PUT A DONK ON IT!!!

  • absurdity. technology really hasnt come all that far

  • this is my teams anthem...sort off

  • cool thing but i bet ppl wish they at least couldve controlled the volym on that thing hehe

  • Well, I guess you could put a smaller cone on this, to reduce the volume. But that thing isn't very loud.

  • Love these...

Would it be possible to play the full intro song perhaps... or if it isn't any longer than the intro, just put it on a loop? Or does the Edison not have a repeat function?

Have had it stuck in my head for days now, and restarting the video 50 times isn't really my preferred way of listening to music. So if anyone smart can cut it out of the video and put the loop up for download, I would be very grateful. (Ridiculous request...)

  • Look up an earlier video on his channel.

It is called "Light as a Feather!".

  • You crazy biatch :)

  • Where'd you get stockfootage of guys in early deep diver gear and possibly war scenes?

  • This is right before everything went digital!

  • Does anyone know where I can get a Edison Cylinder Player now days?

  • ebay?

  • eBay is my best guess

  • That's amazing

  • Creepy.

  • a DVD player lasts 2 years, this cylinder player is more than a hundred years old, enough said.

  • Really says something about how the quality of production has slipped because of mass production.

  • or as the great sandow would say.....

    "this is victor talking machine"

    LOL

  • Well, thanks to Mark, they certainly will be blowing bubbles forever.

  • i love this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing. How much does it all cost now? And where did you get it?

  • Oh yeah, the fidelity on this thing realllly rocks dude.

  • LOLLLLLLL wikipedia said that an england company is making more of those now!

  • This is like stepping into a time machine...

  • I rather get an wiu

  • WHY THE HELL DO I ENJOY THIS?THIS IS HORRIBLE BUT I CANT STOP LISTENNING! I dont understand myself anymore T_T

  • thats so awesome. I will never understand how that works

  • you should review the edison cylinder machine

  • that is so cool, amazing you have it in good condition!!

  • Wow man that thing is pretty cool!

  • Very long day at work, and was feeling like crap, but this cheered me up!

    Thanks CGR!

  • how do you record on a cylinder

i never got how they did that

  • it's very similar to recording on a record.

  • idk how they recorded the music but im guessing its like how ppl in ancient times recorded sounds using scratches in clay pots, they would use hay straws to make clean grooves in wet clay pots and at the same time make sounds, and somehow it would rec their sounds, im guessing thats how this works

  • ...you know, I REALLY love the Edison Cylinder Show. I feel like I need a glass of wine(or beer) to go along with it. Sadly, I was not well enough prepared.

  • dont worry you will get it next time.

  • For some reason I really enjoy these videos, keep em comin

  • Nice music, but what games does it do :)

  • These only cost about $15 on eBay! I don't know how much the cylinder player costs though...

  • If I ever become famous and make music I want my music put on an Edison Cylinder.

  • It's like the vectrex, only more random and oldschool!

  • Can you actually imagine how today none of the people involved in any process that has to do with the production of either the music or recording are alive? It's actually inspiring... 100 years later and all that's left is an old cylinder recording. Amazing.

  • Better yet. Can you imagine that the majority of people who purchased one of these things fresh off the assembly line are dead?

  • omg your fucking right man shit cool but not at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My GOD have we freaking leaped technology-wise in the last 100 years... I mean, hell, we went from this to a freaking radioactive light beam reading data off a reflective disc for God's Sake! XD

  • @letsgetthisoverwith your damn right in the last 50 years weve adavance more than all of mankind had since the beggining of time

  • Tell me about it... I can still remember when all we had was an old windows 95 machine (at best), running internet out of phone connection (billed by the hour no less), printing from those bulky tape/inkjet printers that took forever to print one page (which you still had to blow on so the ink wouldn't run).

  • i hated the phone connection thing, my mom made me turn off the computer so she could use the phone, it sucked,

  • I bet Thriller would sound awesome on this thing.

  • old cartoons lol

  • dude you could sell that for like a crazy money!

  • Lol he most likely bought it for crazy money

  • awesome once again!

  • best one yet, west ham for life :P

  • (Insert tired Michael Jackson gag)

  • im from the UK east london and this is the anthem to west ham united soccer team, who which im a fan of, and this vid actually brought a tear to my eye. thanks mark love your vids your a legend

  • that's what I was thinking as I watched this video. all I could do was say united over and over at the end. I don't even support west ham :)

  • Edison cylinder ftw!

  • Best song form the early 1910s!

  • awesome

  • @pizzadude808 It isn't a video game

  • you're kidding, right?

  • yes it is didnt you see him ise the controller at the beginning

  • this songs ROCKS!!!! love them pretty bubbles

  • impressive

  • where the hell u get this thing

  • wow plain and simple i have an old hand crank record player and i know the sense of joy you get when youve kept somthing that old in working condition

  • West Ham! hopefully someone gets this Green Street reference

  • i do ,dont no if the yanks will

  • Im a hammers fan so i do lol!

    COME ON YOU IRONS!

  • fyi closing the lid will make it better, muffling the mechanical noise of it, although then it will sound like it is from 1920 not 1910.

  • Michael Jacksons favorite song.

  • rofl. You ever think Bubbles ate MJs face like that chimp ate the lady this year? Would explain alot.

  • Haha, fucking awesome. Well done sir!

  • music from a much simpler time

  • Cool videos.

  • I'm forever blowing bubbles in the bathtub.

    This is pretty cool stuff.

Question.. Is this equipment handed down from your family or did you score elsewhere??

  • I had heard of this song a few years ago when this guy that I knew had went to a West Ham United football game overseas and they were singing this song...supposedly it's their team's anthem...a pretty kick ass one to have!

  • He is holding it wrong you damage if the rod if you don't use two fingers on the inside

  • no hes not theres no writing on the ede of them so you can hold them like that

  • It's the outside of the cylinder that has an audio recording engraved

  • Simply amazing.

  • You must have a small fortune in records for that thing. Thanks for sharing.

  • this sounds amasing for 100 years old thats such a long time wow

  • This is awesome! What material is the cylinder made out of? Is it wax?

  • i love the songs you play on here. keep makeing them

  • That machine is so cool! i wish you would do an review of the machine itself and tell us about how you got it, id really like to know!

  • What a fucking banging tune! Me and my home boys be chilling out on street corners with this playing on the ghetto cylinder.

  • Get out then. Obviously more people like this than don't like it.

  • Just don't watch the video...

I think these are awesome, if you don't then wait for the game review and see it.

  • get over it it's his page he can do what ever he wants and if you dont like it follow Bokyotheturnip's advice and leave

  • if u dont like it get the fuck out you common sense lacking idiot.

  • Dude, get the fuck out of here.
