Can anybody explain to me why there was a songlyric in the 1930's where a line went "Like Sally Rand, if she lost her fan"? (The song: Fish out of water). Maybe I've misunderstood something. Thanks.
@pildskadden Okay, two minutes later I check the recommended views, and lo and behold, there's Sally Rand with her fans - so I guess that explains it. So excuse this little private conversation I've just had with myself :0)

Utterly charming episode!! Ms. Rand seems quite lovely and witty. And I love that Robert Q. was about to bust a gut that he learned it before everyone else!!
well, she looked a lot older than 48, so she may have kept her body in shape, but ...
funny thing is that she worked into her old age. i guess people didn't care about her looks as much as the novelty of what she did although there were many, many other fan dancers with grace especially in the busby berkley early 1930's films.
There were many other fan dancers, but there was only one Sally Rand. Often imitated, never duplicated. I'm not sure if she was literally the first, but her name became synonymous with the fan dance, she was the gold standard. I'm not sure if you realize how famous she was in her day. You might want to read the piece on Sally Rand in Joseph Mitchell's book My Ears Are Bent.
Robert Q. Lewis was a successful radio personality of the 40's and 50's, and early TV pioneer. He also had some broadway and film roles of note, including "How to Succeed." He is also noteworthy in that he seemed completely comfortable as a gay guy in a very repressive era. Arthur Godfrey made frequent jokes re: Lewis' sexual preference.
@pasfresh123 Robert Q (Bob) Lewis character actor? and TV interviewer in the 50s ? -- has a small role in "An Affair to Remember" as a broad cast news reporter, I recall.. Also a minor part in the original "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" film with Robert Morse and Michelle Lee
This is the Fan Dance lady, I assume.

Our family knew her well. In the mid or late 60's she lived just off Devonshire Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley.
She seemed to have a fettish for pink, right down to the interior and exterior of her caddy, and in abundance in her home.
She was a grand lady.

OMG. I love her.

That was great. She did maintain her looks especially in an era when cosmetic surgery and cosmetic procedures in general were much much less common.
