I had the honor of meeting Marcus a couple years ago when he spoke to our company. I am VERY proud to call him a brother in arms and will cherish the few minutes I had to talk to him. He was very gracious and signed several hundreds of copies of his book for anyone that wanted one.

I thought it was stupid that the SEALS didn't bring zip-ties or rope or something to tie them up with. They treated at if they had only two options; execute them, or set them free. From this interview you would never know he was near death when an elder from a near by afghan village took him in, cleaned his wounds, fed him and refused to give him up to the taliban when they threatened to kill everyone in the village, its a pashtun custom that says you protect your guest to the death if need be.

My understanding of the navy seals is that they are recruited form the navy. but surely this isnt ideal? your average sailor on a warship has not had the basic introduction of combat and combat training in the same way your average marine/soldier who goes on to delta force/marine recon? how do the navy build such high quality special forces soldiers?

In the official report they only killed 35 of the taliban, and its mostly because they werent taking cover due to their numbers of over 100. They were a larger, easier target who was pursuing, not hiding.
And ultimately these guys lost. Its very sad what happened to them because they stood no chance, but thats war.

Who cares about Katie Couric - this is about SEAL Team 10 and the selfless sacrifice they made to our nation.

Perhaps the best part of the story is the Afghan's protecting him, glad to finally see someone out there putting aside religion and helping someone in dire need out. Wish all Afghans had the courage they did. Thanks to the SEALs for the sacrifice, though.

The seals were doing something right if they were, "an hour into the gun fight" with 100 dirt eaters. How did they let their position get so far off the map? They were only a 4 man team. They never kept in contact with an Evac batt. Was this because of radio silence? Were they in fact a recon team collecting intel?

From this interview you would never know he was near death when an elder from a near by afghan village took him in, cleaned his wounds, fed him and refused to give him up to the taliban when they threatened to kill everyone in the village, its a pashtun custom that says you protect your guest to the death if need be.

My understanding of the navy seals is that they are recruited form the navy. but surely this isnt ideal? your average sailor on a warship has not had the basic introduction of combat and combat training in the same way your average marine/soldier who goes on to delta force/marine recon? how do the navy build such high quality special forces soldiers?

@javiery1990 These guys arent superheroes, they are humans just like the Taliban, no different. They survived for an hour because they were moving from cover to cover while fleeing. In the official report they only killed 35 of the taliban, and its mostly because they werent taking cover due to their numbers of over 100. They were a larger, easier target who was pursuing, not hiding.
And ultimately these guys lost. Its very sad what happened to them because they stood no chance, but thats war.

@trenken "only"? you do realize that killing 35 enemy is a tremendous effort, right? in a big-scale engagement in A-Stan or Iraq you're lucky to get 10 enemies killed total. Real life is not like video games where you go through hundreds of enemies. 35 kills by four men is remarcably high

They have superior equipment, protection, and there was only 4 of them to try and hit, while they were taking cover. On the other hand, they have 150 guys wearing rags out in the open to shoot at. Uh, who do you think is going to end up killing more?

Like you said, they are highly trained warriors and that's why they killed so many. Their unwavering courage and determination to kill as many of those rats as possible is what kept them going.
Read his book, Lone Survivor. It is absolutely incredible.

@trenken You have to remember though, while they are human, they aren't your average human. They are Navy SEALs. Of course they are going to kill a large amount; they have better weapons, highly trained, and deadly accurate.
I don't see them as "supermen", but I do believe they are American heroes.

An RPG blew up next to him and crawled 7 miles over the course of a week because his legs wouldn't work. Superhuman is exactly what that man is. SEALs are like the real life terminators.

We're in Afghanistan with the full cooperation of the Afghan Government, we're fighting with the Afghan National Army, and we continuously send civilian aid-workers to assist the Afghan civilians. We're not their to kill their friends and family. The Afghan civilians that die are merely collateral damage, which is sadly a part of war.

The seals were doing something right if they were, "an hour into the gun fight" with 100 dirt eaters. How did they let their position get so far off the map? They were only a 4 man team. They never kept in contact with an Evac batt. Was this because of radio silence? Were they in fact a recon team collecting intel?

Maybe thinkin they were not detected. But i believe in fact they were and they were being followed and the dirt eaters were communicating and they just got surrounded. A 4 man team is too small to know who is behind them at all times. Far too dangerous a mission to carry out in that area. Were they set up?

The officers in charge of the mission got investigated for handling the situation poorly by refusig to send them air support and contacting there superiors that there guys were in trouble. Not letting the right to bear arms is in direct violation of the bill of rights an would create massive problems when it comes to the competition of gangs for guns.
