  • Thank you!! He did the music for The Thing from Another World, a favorite of mine - gifted, gifted composer!

  • From which albums are these tracks taken? Are they all from the same album? Are they re-recordings? Please maybe someone can give some info on the recordings.

  • Pole,Tiomkin never been "Ukfainian".Please, read his biografy. Kremenchuk just place we he was born.

  • I sure you are right, and I stand corrected.

  • Strangers on a Train: Terrific film and fantastic music.

  • I always liked "Alamo" and "Friendly Persuasion", but I'm sure there are many of his works that aren't coming to mind presently.

  • Dimitri Tiomkin -- greatest movie composer of all time. Period.

  • He is my all time favorite movie composer. Thank you for having this out for me to enjoy over and over between movies.

  • Tiompkin has to be one of the greatest film theme composers of all time!

  • I like Tiomkin, but let's not get carried away. About two-thirds of these themes are lemons. As for writing Western music, that has been exaggerated. Nothing he wrote can touch Elmer Bernstein's "Magnificent Seven." Or for that matter "The Big Country" by Jerome Moross. If you don't believe me, then play these themes on Youtube.

  • Tiomkin's Main Title music for 'The High and the Mighty' is one of his most inspired. Same, too, for 'Giant'.

  • Joan Collin's death in Land of the Pharaohs scared the hell out of me...still does. I became claustrophobic after seeing this picture in my childhood.

  • Anyone who knows the music of Dimitri Tiomkin would put his theme for Rio Bravo at the top of the list. Probably one of the most beautiful melodies of any genre. Omitting it here was quite a shame.

  • Thank you so much, I've been looking for compilation of this caliber for a ling time -- found here!

  • I remember High Noon quite fondly.

  • John Williams should re score Dimitri Tiomkins' music.

  • As MELHORES TRILHAS SONORAS do gênero WESTERN - o Cinema Americano por Excelência- foram compostas por DIMITRI TIOMKIN.

  • The BEST soundtracks of the genre WESTERN - The American movies par excellence - they were composed by DIMITRI TIONKIM.

I'm from Brazil and member of the Cineclube dos Amigos do Western.

  • The Max Steiners, the Dimitri Tiomkins, the John Barrys, the Hans Zimmer, the John Williams and others.......these are the Mozarts, the Bachs the Beethovens, the Chopins and the Vivaldis of our age.

  • Oh and what about Duel in the Sun. The most magnificent western score ever written if you ask me. Why that movie was not better received? It was so good. Dimitri Tiomkin and David O. Selznick, there are no such men left!

  • His score for Red River, magnificent. You could always tell his music, there was a particular "sound." And when he conducted the orchestra, you could always tell also, somehow he affected the way the music was performed, to his style. He was in New York in 1956 for the premiere of "Giant." I was there, but never went to see him and tell him how great I thought he was. Have always regretted that.

  • Where's High and the Mighty? You need part II.

  • circus world = marcha de tierra blanca? :O

  • Exquisito, esplendido, talentoso..

Es una caricia al oido y una poesia al cine

    Brenda

  • genious.........master of 20 century.......

  • It combines two of my favorite things, James Arness and Dimitri Tiomkin. I just had to have it on dvd.

  • yep when I first watched "THE THING'... the music was the first thing that freaked me out. great stuff.since then have watched it a 100 plus time's it never gets old even tho I do.and Dimitri's music is classic for all the film's.thanks for this. Galildog

  • I feel the same way about "The Thing...". It's become a family joke. In fact, I think I'll go watch it right now!

  • Ah, *The Fall of the Roman Empire*.

The movie of which *Gladiator* was a re-make.

  • Great music. I just picked up a 4CD set of Tiomkin's music. The 4th disc is vocal stuff and it's amazing. Town Without Pity is amazing and don't forget Friendly Persuasion!

  • Where did you get the set? What is the name of it?

  • The Alamo: The Essential Film Music Collection [BOX SET]

  • Would it be possible to upload the theme from Giant, in its entirety?

  • Yes, please, if you could!!!

  • Dimitri Tiomkin's theme from "The Thing" was the most eerie ever composed for a science-fiction film. It still sends chills up my spine just as it did when I was a boy. Brilliant in every way.

  • I think The Alamo was his best!

  • When I hear High Noon, I think of growing up in a time of innocence and safety. I miss that America

  • @jerbear54 That's strange, since "High Noon" is all about the Red Scare, McCarthy's witch hunts, and Cold War-era paranoia.

  • @jerbear54 Me, too! Film composers were more creative back then, too. There is so much junky electronic music now. No soundtrack music makes the hit parade any more. I love Tiomkin's The Unforgiven theme. I have a scratchy old LP of the soundtrack by the Saint Cecilia Orchestra. Cheers!

  • Giant was his very best!!

  • I knew the most of this titles, but now I know who composed the music. It's iteresting what a wide spectrum of gengres he covered with his composions

    Good adidea with the posters.

  • Isn't it amazing that a Russian wrote the background music

to the American western movies.I find it brilliant.

  • Amazing indeed.

  • Also amazing that one of his orchestrators (Herschel Burke Gilbert), studied with Leonard Bernstein and would make a contribution to the Western genre himself (the main title and library music to "The Rifleman").

  • @williamholzman Actually, Dimi was Ukranian - a different country, if a part of the Soviet Union.

  • Not Russian. Ukrainian. Regards. Pole.

  • @williamholzman like that russian who owns this u-tube-co :)

  • @williamholzman there are many great russian composers :) Russian literature is another amazing subject :)

  • Great compositor

  • Great, great just great! Thanks. Man,that Fall of the Roman Empire score is just fantastic. When the hell is that going to be released on CD? Well done!

  • I have it on Varese Sarabande label. It may be out of print now.

  • Great vid, but I wish you'd included Shadow of a Doubt. There was a great piano piece in there as Charley runs to the library.

  • Indeed. Tiomkin and Hitchcock worked very well together. I wish we had CD recordings of Shadow, Dial M, and Strangers as well as the Hermann scores!

  • ncly: I think some of Herrmann's scores were actually released on records and re-released on CD but it's a shame that there aren't any original recordings for older film scores other than the films.

  • Red River soundtrack is one of my favourites. Nice compilation of Tiomkin soundtracks!

  • Oh Fall of the Roman Empire was his best you have to hear the whole overture this snippet here doesn't do it justice! It's on youtube just type it in

  • GREAT! Thank you for posting. Dimitri Tiomkin has been one of the greatest film composers all of the time. my favorit scores of his wonderful soundtracks are now and before

THE ALAMO and RED RIVER. Thx again!

  • Wow! Thank you benydebney for posting. Very clever of you to juxtapose Mr Tiomkin's music with movie posters. The use of a few nonenglish posters was a big plus. Current composers please note Mr Tiomkin's music was both memorable and humable!! I plan to return to my life after I listen to this for another dozen times.

  • WONDERFUL! Makes me long for the Golden Age! Fantastic!

  • Strangers on a Train, what an awesome, timeless score.

  • What a joy! Thank you so much.

  • wonderful!
