TODD has touched on every genre of modern music, and that does include PROG ROCK. If you are the ones here that doubt that then listen to A Wizard A True Star, Ra, Initiation and cuts from various other albums. Pop, psychedelic, acid, soul, funk, hip-hop, rap, blues, jazz, hard rock, classic rock, country, bosanova, accapella...he has done it ALL. I can't think of any other that has. Hall of Famer if there ever was one!!! He can play any instrument, write, produce. Also a genius in the studio!
Todd never played so-called"prog.rock".He was+is very popular among punk/new wave circles.Though he is very virtuos, inventive+often a genius-he has kept a basic punk-style attitude -so as when he told his ex-label Warner just to fuck off a few years ago. Also his harmonies have not a lot in common with Genesis or Yes,they´re NOT constructed but organic+his guitar.playing reminds often of Hendrix or Zappa of course. It has nothing to do with overloaded "prog rock".Maybe Yes+Genesis stole FROM HIM!
@MrSKINFLICK we all have our humble opinion... thanks for sharing mr onion head...lol prog rock.. what is it..other than another's opinion.. Todd Rocked and filled our heads with information and our hearts with love. All we can hope is that... "There is always More.... International Feel...." still there is more..
@MrSKINFLICK Todd very much did progresive rock....he totally changed his style from short pop songs to long form songs right during the wave of Prog...Todd saw the peak of musicianship that YES and other bands displayed and wanted in. Todd's the best there ever was...but he clearly bought into the prog movement...because at the time (mid seventies) prog was it. And Todd fit right in. I just wish it had been TR rather than Trevor Rabin that joined YES in 1983...

Goo stuff and decent sound for 30+ years ago. Now I wanna hear him do the rest of that side (you over-forties will know what that means) of Wizard, A True Star.
No doubt: all the songs on this album are great, and, the album deserves to be atop the heap of great(-est) ones. I got it, when it first came out; and played it - repeatedly - it simply, absolutely amazed me!
One time, I nearly lost my mind listening to the overlapping chorus 'rows' in "Just One Victory", in particular! (Having taken a drop [approx. 4000-5000mics] of LSD-25 [out of a 3ml vial, 'obtained' from a hospital safe] beforehand might have had something to do with that, however....)
Got just the thing for you - a cure: Thorazine! "Better living through chemistry": 200mg, and you won't even have the energy to stay awake long enough to begin to entertain the notion of trying to think. Problem solved...next!
i saw Todd 7 times in the 70s including Carnegie Hall, Radio city and his birthday Show at Central park. also saw him twiceat Asbury Park, the the Beacon theatre and Morristown. also saw him in January in Alexandria,.
All The Children Sing album was the twilight of Todd's career ? Well, there has yet to have ever been a Todd album called "All The Children" nor has there been anything that could be considered the "twilight" of Todds career. As productive and relevant as ever ! Pick up the new "Arena" release for proof.....
Utopia- 1977- Ra and Oops, Wrong Planet; 1980- Deface the Music and Adventures in Utopia; 1981- Swing to the Right: 1982- The self titled Utopia: 1983- Oblivion
Todd- 1978- Hermit of Mink Hollow; 1981- Healing; 1982- The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect
I just don't think this was at all the twilight of Todd's career, or if he has ever even had a twilight. He just released a dynamic solo record, Arena, last month. So I don't believe Todd can be counted out quite yet.
Hmmmm, actually by the late 70s, Todd Rundgren was already at the twilight of his career. His last major album was All the Children Sing-which came out around 1978. His Back to Bars which was great, also came out in the late 70s, but that was mostly a collection of previous work.
know your shit before you say such things.1978 was "Hermit of Mink Hollow" which was great. Back to the Bars was a collection of work he performed live closely before the album of the same name was released. It has a great version of the beautiful "range war" with spencer davis on harmonica
Parts of this verge on punk or metal intensity without loosing the proggy, geeky goodness that is Rundgren's trademark... Solo bliss at 2:30! With the wacky time sig intact! Why hasn't this been released as an EP?
Wow! Guitar solo heaven! 3 40 second-long at 2:15, 3:26, and 5:16 to the end . . . The drums! The lead vocals! Backing vocals! They reached for and hit those high notes on International Feel! This is one for the books - thanx, Youtube! Thanx, Frankygenesis!
BTW, I'm German, and that was a huge response for Germans, famously subdued. Plus, you can't blame them on this one, if they didn't know what hit them!
Rockpalast on German TV were famous for their crappy sound. I've got the whole performance on video on which you can see Todd make bitchy remarks to the monitor soundman. The audience is just amazing..they're not aware of witnessing a great gig. Just watch how they clap..dullness galore. Furthermore there's Todd's guitar..Haven't we seen this one years later as a new invention/gimmick played by TAFKAP/The Symbol or whatever the talentless midget is called?
I wish I could have seen Frank Zappa live. I've seen Yes, ELP,Todd, Rush. I wish I had seen King Crimson also.I saw a local band (Boston,Ma) Tribe cover Couldn't I just tell you. They did a great job of it. Not only is Todd great but
this and amasing pre(RA) show..what great footage..(remember the lyrics) Utopia is here ...If we could only be back there for a day...a moment wouldn't be enough
Long shot here: in the late 70's early 80's my sister painted a picture of Todd rundgren holding his SG guitar with a wizard true star background. It was lost in a apartment move.
If anyone in the Ohio area knows or has seen this please e-mail me, it means alot too me.
I've got this one on vinyl and wore out 2 copies! It was my "Intro to Todd"-I spent hours digging the cover and sleeve art alone. He's a great (if under-appreciated) artist. Rock on!
My bad, Analogger! I dug out the LP and it's Janson Eding Clapper salad-deliciious and nutritious. "You don't need your crotch, 'cause you know it's only a crutch-BUT YOU NEED YOUR HEAD" Indeed...
I'm trying to find an old video tape I have somewhere. 1999 I was working in radio in Orlando. I broadcast live one week from South Beach in Miami. the tourism dept set up all sorts of things for me to do....including going to Willie Wilcox's studio. I video taped the studio and he and my bass-player buddy jamming together. If I can find it I will post it.
Looking forward to that. I dug this period of Todd's work (the Progressive Rock tag doesn't cover it) as a writer and guitarist. He's a unique talent-on this planet, anyway.
Quel extase! One of my favorite albums of all time. Wish the whole record was on here! I still have the original vinyl, but I'd have to find it. Oh well, just have to replay this one. Merci pour le live.

Ankh you! Kasim is just a babe, wonder if he still has those booties? Todd still smiles the same way today. Love it. Maybe next year he will tour with his rock arena stuff, they sure don't make good tunes like this one today!

You're correct trfollower - this was the RA tour as evidenced by the costumes and custom guitar. It's possible that this was the pre RA - post Initiation tour because instead of the Giant Sphinx (complete with Green laser 3rd eye) which was featured on the RA tour, there's the Initiation "DaVinci" LP cover in the background. Love seeing the custom guitars again, (way before Prince).
