TODD has touched on every genre of modern music, and that does include PROG ROCK. If you are the ones here that doubt that then listen to A Wizard A True Star, Ra, Initiation and cuts from various other albums. Pop, psychedelic, acid, soul, funk, hip-hop, rap, blues, jazz, hard rock, classic rock, country, bosanova, accapella...he has done it ALL. I can't think of any other that has. Hall of Famer if there ever was one!!! He can play any instrument, write, produce. Also a genius in the studio!

Todd never played so-called"prog.rock".He was+is very popular among punk/new wave circles.Though he is very virtuos,inventive+often a genius-he has kept a basic punk-style attitude -so as when he told his ex-label Warner just to fuck off a few years ago.Also his harmonies have not a lot in common with Genesis or Yes,they´re NOT constructed but organic+his guitar.playing reminds often of Hendrix or Zappa of course.It has nothing to do with overloaded "prog rock".Maybe Yes+Genesis stole FROM HIM!

@MrSKINFLICK Todd very much did progresive rock....he totally changed his style from short pop songs to long form songs right during the wave of Prog...Todd saw the peak of musicianship that YES and other bands displayed and wanted in. Todd's the best there ever was...but he clearly bought into the prog movement...because at the time (mid seventies) prog was it. And Todd fit right in. I just wish it had been TR rather than Trevor Rabin that joined YES in 1983...

I saw Todd Rundgren & Utopia at the Poplar Creek Music Ampitheatre in Hoffman Estates, IL. in 1985 or 86, as a 5th or 6th grader, incapable of fully appreciating the musical complexity and finesse of such a gifted artist and his band. One time, I nearly lost my mind listening to the overlapping chorus 'rows' in "Just One Victory", in particular! (Having taken a drop [approx. 4000-5000mics] of LSD-25 [out of a 3ml vial, 'obtained' from a hospital safe] beforehand might have had something to do with that, however....)

Hmmmm, actually by the late 70s, Todd Rundgren was already at the twilight of his career. His last major album was All the Children Sing-which came out around 1978. His Back to Bars which was great, also came out in the late 70s, but that was mostly a collection of previous work.

Rockpalast on German TV were famous for their crappy sound. I've got the whole performance on video on which you can see Todd make bitchy remarks to the monitor soundman. The audience is just amazing..they're not aware of witnessing a great gig. Just watch how they clap..dullness galore. Furthermore there's Todd's guitar..Haven't we seen this one years later as a new invention/gimmick played by TAFKAP/The Symbol or whatever the talentless midget is called?

Long shot here: in the late 70's early 80's my sister painted a picture of Todd rundgren holding his SG guitar with a wizard true star background. It was lost in a apartment move.

I broadcast live one week from South Beach in Miami. the tourism dept set up all sorts of things for me to do....including going to Willie Wilcox's studio. Its the standard Utopia lineup for crying out loud. The tour was short after the RA album was released. However, these two songs are from A wizard, a true star which is a Rundgren-album from 73. No musicians out of the ordinary here, exept they all are :)

You're correct trfollower - this was the RA tour as evidenced by the costumes and custom guitar. It's possible that this was the pre RA - post Initiation tour because instead of the Giant Sphinx (complete with Green laser 3rd eye) which was featured on the RA tour, there's the Initiation "DaVinci" LP cover in the background. Love seeing the custom guitars again, (way before Prince).
