@Bub820 You know what? I was watching videos on Youtube, and then I was gonna listen to this song on my iTunes and while the song was playing, I was crying. This was a while back. now I was watching this video and I cried again and never looked at comments. Then I finally noticed your comment here, so my point here is I already joined you before I read your comment :=)
This is quite possibly the most simple but truly beautiful and heartfelt song ever....I don't know what it is but it has so many layers that make it so fascinating. Too bad Sesame Street doesn't have the same kind of writers they use to.
Growing up, this has always been in the back of my mind. There's so many strange places I'd like to be, but none of them permanently. I will make a wish on a star and I'll wish I was home once again.
This song was played at my 7-month old Grandson's Funeral - every time I hear it, I think of Baby Keagan and hope and pray he is well, where ever he is. Rest in Peace, little one, and know that Maw Maw and your big brothers Cody and Logan love you.
@NoMoreSun55 I'm sorry for your loss. He is looking down on you from Heaven. This song reminds me of someone I lost too, long ago, although thankfully he is still alive.
Man, this song used to make me cry, every time! Don't know why, but even now, it makes me depressed. And while I can blame this wetness in my eyes a little on missing childhood, Jim Henson, Mr. Rogers, and good programs...I'm 20 years old XD
@greensleeves42 ME, TOO! I'm gonna be 20 this year and I really miss the good old TV shows... back when kids used to watch smart stuff and not junk like SpongeBob and whatnot! xP
I'm almost 36 and I was so lucky to have the perfect timing for childhood! Jim Henson was soooooo special! Yes, I also get so sentimental about how wonderful old sesame street was too.
If there was ever a song from a TV show that could be called absolutely immortal, this is it. Everything about this song in perfect. The Lyrics, message, instrumentals and vocals. This song and Jim Hensen are a magical combination. There are very few people who could be called immortal, however, Jim Hensen was absolutely one of the few that could be called immortal. It was because of him and others like him that Sesame Street was such an awesome show.
I remember being little and watching and listening to this song all the time. I used to say "Moon! Moon!" To get my parents to put it on. I miss my childhood...
i remember my mom singing this to me when i was a little girl i was only 4 when she died so this song has a very special place in my heart...I miss you mommy, I am 20 and yes i said mommy if you have a problem then fine
I'm very sorry about your mom. My mom died too, in November 2009. When I was a kid, and this song would come on, I'd cry and she always gave me a hug and a cookie....lol. But when I hear it now, I remember those times, and that makes it harder, now that she's gone. So needless to say, I cry over the song more now, than I ever did as a child. <3
This song always makes me tear up.... It's my absolute favorite song from Seasame Street :) Jim Henson, you were s GENIUS no question about it!! Love you!! <3 <3
Unlike many who grew up watching the Muppet Show and Sesame Street, I just came across this song a few weeks back when I was watching it with my 4 year old boy. This song sounds so simple and honest - yet the message is so deep and meaningful. I am approaching 40 now and I have just decided to watch Sesame Street all over again with my boy.
Okay so I discovered this song twenty years ago when I was babysitting for a kid who is now in college! I still love it, I wish Peter Gabriel would cover it. :) Thanks for posting it!!!
I have always loved Bert and Ernie! I am 50 years old, and enjoyed watching it with my boys growing up. Now my son sings this to his children before bed time. I think it is so sweet. Good memories. <3
I miss the old "Sesame Street" tv show. Brings back good memories. Watching this show when I was a kid taught me a lot of things --- from spelling to reading, good values, friendship and family. Wish that there are more shows like this on TV .
@kshooper89 Not so much Sesame Street, as much as the Muppets in general. I was watching The Muppet Movie on Youtube and someone said the SAME thing about "The Rainbow Connection". There are obviously some profound writers for the Muppets to be coming up with stuff like this.
sesame street used to be amazing - i watched it everyday from age 2 to 6... now, i can't bear to look at it- it has changed too much... the innocence is gone
i rememebr seeing this as a kid! and i totally forgot about it until i stumbled across it here a few days ago, and somehow i magically rembered the words! i love ernie ^.^
my mom always told me he died, so i never felt sad about it. HOWEVER two years ago, i found out my favourite puppeteer richard hunt, died in 1992, and i cried. i know it's been said before, but the good die young. they were such wonderful people and they left this world too soon.
This was my son's bedtime song years ago... I must have sung it a thousand times... The wonderful thing was that no matter how wound up he was, when he heard this song he almost instantly calmed down... Thank you Mr. Henson for making bedtime so easy for me.
So do I. I think a lot of people are begging Sesame Workshop to bring those old sketches back, or to show sketches like them, so I think maybe they will.
Happy 40th Birthday Sesame Street. This show is iconic. Most of the things I know now, I learned the fundamentals of on Sesame Street. Thank you Mr. Henson for being an absolute genius, and sharing your gift of muppets with us.
I'm 24 and this song has always made me sad. For some reason now, not so much as when I was a kid, but it was probably the most bittersweet song on Sesame Street for me.
AM I the only 27 year old that cries when I hear this song. I love it. It gives me a warm feeling. Oh, I see your ages. He hee. Yeah, I know, It's emotional. Don't know if it's because I have a three year old, I don't think that would matter. I would still be crying like I am now. I cry even harder when Aaron Neville sings it with him. :) I love his voice. :)
That when I have children of my own, they will only be able to watch Sesame Street, Punky Brewster, and any other educational show that came from this time period, If that they don't like it tough, then we won't have a television at all.
I'm a spoiled primadonna Montana. The only thing that today's childrens programing teaches our kids to be is materialistic and self centered among other things. Kids these days make fun of Sesame Street, and other educational programs from our generation. They tell us that there lame, stupid, not entertaining. I say the youth of today is completely wrong. Sesame Street, and other shows like it from that time period were, and always will be greater then any modern show. I'm proud to say...
This Ladies and Gentlemen was back when children's educational programing was good. This song is so touching its amazing. Sesame Street was a wonderful learning tool for our generation, people 25 - 35 years old. It's shows like this that shaped us in to the type of people we are today. Todays childrens television is just terrible. Nothing but stupid humour and not educational on any level. This type of programing is what the youth of today need, not Sponge Bob Idiot Pants, or Hannah...
To the people who posted comments: We are all almost the same age. I'm 25 and this song makes me emotional as well, I don't know why. Brings back lots of memories.
Damn...this song makes me cry. ( not ashame to admit it though I'm 22)..I remember that when I was a child it also made me cry...why?...why do we have to grow up and loose so many things?...
So good memeories...I gues you may grow up...but as long as you want you'll have a pure heart of a child...
this song is so relaxing. When I have my kids or kid later on from the ages infent til 9 i will play this at bed time this will help him or her go to sleep who agrees with me
Best sesame street songs 1. I would like to visit the moon 2. C is for cookie 3. Rubber duckie 4. Monster in my mirror 5. I love trash 6. Batty Bat 7. Count it higher 8. Alligator king 9. Sing a song 10. Dance myself to sleep Not necessarily in that order
I always felt that this song somehow gives a reassurance to those who had loved ones move or pass away that these people are remembering watching over them.
I am a part-time nanny to a wonderfull 2 year old. She is SOO musical and LOVES! to sing. I'm teaching her this song because it is just so awesome and everyone needs to know it, in my opinion.
It's such a touching song and yet so fun, too. I mean, the jungle, dinosaurs, rocketships etc.
I just love it so so much. To me it has just as much impact as a beethoven concerto or similar can. They just don't make songs like this nowadays (I feel old saying that, but im only 19!)
This song used to make me sad when I was little. It still does today.. I had totally forgotten about this song until yesterday it was on when my son was watching Sesame Street. I just sat down and felt little again. Maybe that's why it's so sad.. because we all miss being little and the moon is when we "grow up".
Malakisi I agree with you that the moon is when we grow up and it is saying that when we grow up we should not forget who we are or where we come from. I am 28 and this is one of my sons favorite songs
Oh? What's the #1 best SS song to you? For sure this one is in the top three no matter who ranks :)
I think this one does it for me, but the ladysmith black mombazi alphabet and the "somebody come and play" (I'm of the snow leopard version generation) are up there too.
it's not easy being green is popular, but I never really got into that one.
Oh yeah C is for cookie is awesome too :) But not the original, the pyramids version. its sung operatically.
I never really LOVED do de rubber duck, My fav. ernie/ducky song is "rubber ducky you're the one" I remember my mom had to buy like 5 copies of that one, on tape cause they would be ruined from me playing them constantly :)
Danger no stranger was good, but my fav. "rap" type was the one about walking. That was great :)
Aah youtube, where else can you wax lyrically about these things?
Does anyone know a Hindi version of this song? I have always wanted to hear/know this in Hindi. Hindi is such a pleasant language and I think a Hindi rendition of this would would sound so heavenly.
I remember my mother putting me down for a nap and falling asleep listening to this song. I am 27 now and every time I hear this song it makes me tired and sleepy
A month ago, I moved to another place where I am paying very cheap rent. As much I love the place where I am now living, whenever I hear this song, it brings back memories of my old place. It was a nice placw. Though, my new place is even nicer.
I use to sing this to my baby girl every-night, and now she is 8..

I wish I can hear this in Hindi. Hindi is such a sweet language and this song would sound really melodious in Hindi.

Maybe that's why it's so sad.. because we all miss being little and the moon is when we "grow up".
malakisi 2 years ago 4
Malakisi I agree with you that the moon is when we grow up and it is saying that when we grow up we should not forget who we are or where we come from. I am 28 and this is one of my sons favorite songs

This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. Maybe because sometimes I think of people who have passed away and start to miss them.
It's a beautiful song I just can't sing it to my kids without tearing up.
Beautifully written and a pleasure to hear and reflect.

2nd best song in SS history hands down
brianklick 2 years ago
Oh? What's the #1 best SS song to you? For sure this one is in the top three no matter who ranks :)
I think this one does it for me, but the ladysmith black mombazi alphabet and the "somebody come and play" (I'm of the snow leopard version generation) are up there too.
it's not easy being green is popular, but I never really got into that one.
sharpiemarkeramanda 2 years ago
Those sure r classics. ive been looking at alot of my favorite songs i remember recently and of them i think i have my top 5.
1 C is for cookie, 2 I dont wanna live on the moon, 3 any one of kermits songs, 4 do de rubber duck, and 5 Dangers no Stranger.
Since i was a kid i always thought no song could beat C is for cookie and i guess i still think its true
brianklick 2 years ago
Oh yeah C is for cookie is awesome too :) But not the original, the pyramids version. its sung operatically.
I never really LOVED do de rubber duck, My fav. ernie/ducky song is "rubber ducky you're the one" I remember my mom had to buy like 5 copies of that one, on tape cause they would be ruined from me playing them constantly :)
Danger no stranger was good, but my fav. "rap" type was the one about walking. That was great :)
Aah youtube, where else can you wax lyrically about these things?
sharpiemarkeramanda 2 years ago
hey yea i remember that 1 its called "I got a new way to walk", i wasn't a big fan of rubber duckie, dont know why.
There was 1 song i couldnt get enough of when i was young called "Telephone rock" its hilarious to me.

A month ago, I moved to another place where I am paying very cheap rent. As much I love the place where I am now living, whenever I hear this song, it brings back memories of my old place. It was a nice placw. Though, my new place is even nicer.
