  • this made my day

  • @yenbadcito Got some basic tabs now for it. after soooo many requests :o)

  • Thank You For a very comprehensive lesson. Excelent. I do have problem with right hand,it is very difficult to coordinate ,it is like Only the tumb or Only index finger picking but never in a coordinated fashion. How do I practice for that?

  • @skidown Check out my fingerpicking exercises 1 to 3. they should help with co - ordination, practice slowly. Repetition, over and over, only increase tempo when perfected.

    :o) Thanks

  • what does your sexual partner tells of long nails?

  • Comment removed

  • its hard keeping the rhythm of the bass but also playing the melody its tough to learn

  • @forkman22222 If you find this too difficult, try perfecting Finger picking exercises 1. 2 and 3. Practice everything slowly until it it correct. Then increase the tempo. There are no short cuts I'm afraid just lots of practice.

    Good luck. :o) Max

  • Many thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with others..........What a beautiful guitar, but at 2,800 dollars I don't think I will be acquiring one in the near future ;-)

  • @movement26 Hi, thanks for your kind comment. Well I wish i still had her but I needed a gigging guitar and she was not prepared to be bashed around Europe. My Guild went to a good home. I used it for "Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Tropea" on my CD "Homage", I think it's on Spotify. :o) Or listen at cdbaby.com

I bought my Maton 808 with the money. :o) Enjoy my other lessons. All the best. Max

  • 55,000 and 4 dislikes ha! :o) I'll try and put some more up soon.

  • Great instruction video. Thanks!

  • @FrankLucci Thankyou, hope you get a chance to check out some others too. :o) Max

  • Sounds sweet enough to make the gods weep and set dogs to dancing! You have rejuvenated one old phart's motivation to take up where he left off 20+ years ago and keep banging away at it until his fingertips scream. Thank you ever so much.

  • @Anna82Purna hey enjoy banging away! :o) Thanks

  • @NickBishop66 It's a Guild D55 Artist. lovely guitar. I sold it a while back :o( to get my Maton 808TE which is just a brilliant guitar for playing live. :o)

  • Hi, Max. I play almost exclusively in open Dm and open D and was running out of ideas. Thanks for showing some interesting licks, dig it.

  • @mtraas3 Hey thanks I'll try and post another one soon. All the best Max

  • beautiful tune and excellent video, thanks for posting it!

  • @johngo6283 Hey many thanks, enjoy the other lessons. Max :o)

  • Thanks...very helpful and clear........now I can call open D... Vestapol tuning too and impress my mates

  • @sbilts Thanks for your kind comment, check out some of my other lessons too. Have fun.

    Max

  • @sbilts Thanks for your kind comment, check out some of my other lessons too. Have fun.

    Max

  • thanks...good stufff...

  • @mcguire451 cheers glad you like it. Check out some other lessons I've done. Max

  • Absolut Magic,, Thank you for taking the time to uploade ur expertise,,

  • @brznzzy hi, many thanks, sorry about the late reply I've been so busy. :o)

  • Practice till your fingers cramp and bleed, then play a bit more. I've been playing for 35 years and sometimes I feel like I don't know anything. It's blissful ignorance, though x

  • Great job.......appreicate the lesson. Love the open D sound

  • Thanks for taking the time. Very good lesson !

  • @soundmethod Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. Max

  • @Notled2 Actually DADGAD is another form of the open D tuning, which is DADF#AD. DADGAD should be an open Dsus4, while the open G tuning is DGDGBD

  • could u tell me How long should i do finger picking practice everyday?please suggest me some important tips

  • @Neelcool87 Try to practice in 15 minute sessions and take regular breaks. If you can get in an hour a day, great! If not, do what you can.You can't really practice too much!! :o)

  • @AcousticMax yea you can lol...its called when your fingers are too sore to play and practice the next day..i wouldnt suggest practicing over 3 hours a day at most and your right the breaks are important too..but honestly ive found if you practice over 3 hours a day especially with no breaks your fingers keep you from being able to practice the next day..and i have callices on my fingers from playing alot and it still does that to me if i play too long

  • Love the lesson is it possible to post the tab it would be easier to learn thanks mike

  • @noshortsus I don't think I have tabs for this particular lesson. I'm a strong believer it trying work stuff out by ear, transcribing as much music as possible if you can and lot's of practice. If you send e mail address I'll send some similar lesson tabs. Max

  • I allways thought open D tunning was DADGAD but this is DADF#AD right? This tunning sounds more country than irish.

  • @lonewolfgabo Yep this is open D. That means when you strum open strings you get a D major chord. e.g. Open E is tuned EBEG#BE. DADGAD is an open tuning.

    Cheers Max

  • @lonewolfgabo DADGAD is one of the forms of Open D minor tuning, where as DADF#AD is Open D major Tuning. The difference is the minor vs major chord that is made by the open chord. because the standard form of the D Major (typically just shortened to D) is D-F#-A whereas D minor is D-G-A

  • @kickassboyxx D-F-A is D minor, D-G-A is infact a D with a suspended fourth. DADGAD tuning can be used to create a G5 chord by fretting the second frett on the third string (G string)

  • @lonewolfgabo I always thought the f# sounded better when using a slide, too.

  • The very first tuning I learned to fingerpick, was open D, so versatile, your lesson is excellent, but it so difficult to get that rythm going on those 2 D strings! I know, practice, practice........keep up the good work.

  • @iaingbrennan Yep slowly, slowly catch the monkey as one of my students used to say. Good luck with it. Max

  • Is that a Twin reverb, in the bakc?

  • @perfuzz Hi yep it was a Blackface 65 re issue. I use a Black Star 5 watt head for recording now and a Fender Tremolux for electric gigs. Most of the time it's acoustic gigs so I use an AER 60watt amp L.R.Baggs PARA d.i. or Fishman Aura depending on the venue. My main giging acoustic is a Maton 808TE. Hope you enjoyed the lessons.

  • @AcousticMax - I did enjoy it! I'm only just started out with open chord tuning. At the moment I'm sniffing the net for Elmore stuff.

I've got an BF Twin Reverb with a AB763 circuit. A bit heavy, but the sound makes it worth while. Oh yes and a home brewed 5F6-a amp. This "Bassman" is perfect for slide guitar!

  • @BellumSacrumBellum28

Thanks for your response, playing in standard tuning is not a problem for me. Check out Sheila's Smile/Alphonso's Rag on my page. I can send you the music and you can post your version or something easier like my version of Heard it Through the Grapevine but that has a drop D so that's probably cheating too.

These are free lessons I posted before having surgery for Bowel cancer, thankfully I'm clear now so i'll post some more lessons soon. It's a free lesson, get over it.

  • hi i'll be trying out your licks just learned first song in open d and i love the tun ing already i responded with first 1 i learned

  • Many thanks I hope to put some more stuff up soon.

  • I take that you are using the 2nd and 3rd fingers for the now high a and d strings on the first lick ? really cool stuff many thanks

  • @guitarist100 yep mostly finger 2 but use what feels comfortable for you.

Enjoy! I hope to post some more lessons soon.

  • Great stuff .. is there anywhere you have developed this just one step further perhaps.

Thanks . You've demystified open d picking , for me

  • @donkylemore I hope to post some more stuff soon, I've just been so busy. have fun with it. Max

  • Great lesson!! Thank you!

  • @TotallyNOTMelGibson Thankyou for watching, enjoy. max

  • The higher part where you go up to the 7th and 9th fret sounds striking similar to John Denver's song, "Poems, Prayers, and Promises", does it not?

  • Hi @melodel2 ,

I don't the song at all, I learned this in 70's after hearing Stephan Grossman play it.

    Hope you enjoy playing it.

  • @AcousticMax Oh! Well good to know, that's interesting, maybe it is just a common set of notes played in open D. Thanks! It's a good challenge for me, and I will!

  • man. wonderful lesson. you get you point across very well.

  • hi ,,,thankyou soo much ,,big help w trying to alt the thumb at the same time ,, it took 21/2hrs but got it ,,just berely ,,,thanx man ,,and peace

  • Hey,

Firstly I would like to thank you, your lesson was great. I really appreciate the advice, got me picking mate'. Gets hard going it alone with little direction, been a big help.

  • The secret is to take everything really slowly and practice everyday in short bursts of no more than 15 minutes. Tackle on job at a time, master it and move on.

It will come, try the finger picking exercise one on my page too.

    All the best.

    Max

  • wonderful teaching technique and a great little song. hats off to you and others like you sharing your talents. thank you

  • Many thanks I hope to post some more soon now i am in better health. Max

  • thanks for your time man.....this is a nice pice to pick around with.........your right i havent heard it the samE yet.......this one is my style.....hope you dont mind me borrowing it

  • i just started playing guitar and im really trying to learn this song but its kinda hard :/ also do you have any tips on doing the bars? cause every time i try its either all the same or i dont get any sound.

  • Hi Mollykins, if you have just started playing guitar you will find this tricky as it's about a grade 4 piece over here in the UK. You might want to master the beginner picking lessons first.

  • Work on this in small sections and use it as a long term project. With the bar section, ensure your thumb is behind the guitar neck slightly below centre. Place the the index finger just behind the chosen fret, say 5th. Press down the index finger gently brush the string and see how many ring out. relax the hand and repeat gradually adding enough pressure to make the string ring out.

  • Keep relaxing and repeating this for about a minute. This will gradually help to build the strength in the fingers to hold down the bar.

If you are having to press down very hard you need to check the "action " on your guitar. That's the height of the strings above the frets. This can normally be put right at a good Music shop.

  • They will have a repair department for these kind of jobs.

It might just need some adjustment of the truss rod, again this is a job for an expert.

Good luck with piece, take it slowly and you will master it. Max

  • Really nice lesson, your guitar sounds great! :)

Just bought a vintage v300 to start acoustic on and hope to try this some day when I get good enough :) favourited!

  • Thanks very much for your kind comment. Just practice each day and enjoy your music. I'm sure you'll get years of pleasure from your guitar. Good luck.

    Max

  • Thank you so much for posting this for us. I'm just beginning to experiment with open tuning and am always looking for little tunes I can play around with. Your teaching style is fantastic and is helping me get over my fear of jamming with other people. Thank you! :)

  • Thanks for your kind comment, I hope to post some more lessons soon. Have fun, Max

  • I'll see what I can do, I'm recovering from major surgery for treatment of Bowel Cancer. I'm getting stronger each day and hope to put some more stuff up soon now I'm playing again.

    Thanks Max

  • A nice little video, I've never tried Open D, so I was a tiny bit confused about what I could achieve with it, but no longer. My dad had Bowel Cancer, thankfully he recovered, and is now fighting fit. Cheers mate. Happy days, and no worries.

  • hey man great lesson. Could do a lesson on slide in d ?

  • Thanks for your kind comment, you can have some fun dropping the top E (1st) to D too. Song for George by Eric Johnson uses that.

Just off on tour will be back soon.

    Max

  • Nice one mate... just started playing about in Open D cos i'm trying to learn Rolling Stones - You Got The Silver and come across this... shall be playing this for a while... cheers

  • Thanks for that, she must know it. I'll check it out over the next few days. We're in the studio again to finish the EP.

    keep pickin'

  • Cherry should try another Henske classic, High Flying Bird, She would kill that in concert. Like the teaching,,I'm a 6-2-3-1 picker. Looking for an old blues soul in DC to get right with the blues.

  • We are recording an EP for Spring release. I did a great gig with Cherry last night and we are looking forward to Blues Festivals coming up.

Check her myspace. Did you see Wade in The Water. That was nearly 2 years ago, you should hear her now!

  • Cool lesson.I was kind of in a rut, trying to figure out some new stuff in open D. I've been playing for a long time, but hadn't done much in open tunings lately. Seemed like I'd "hit a wall" . Thanks for helping me break through it.

  • I'm learning this tune, it's preety voice ...
