I'm a bouncer & I can attest to Bas' attitude. The majority of the job is just talking to people and trying to get them back into an amenable (and monetarily agreeable) mood should they feel slighted for some reason. I'm saddened to hear that Bas had such bad experiences with bouncers in his past but maybe that is the difference between the doormen of yesterday and today. Things can get ugly if someone is dead-set on a fight though.
@zekethafreakful Ron Waterman is a big dude. he's about my height and has about 15 pounds of muscle on me. That's pretty good. As far as your boss going to clubs just to fight bouncers, I don't think that is such a good idea no matter how big you are. you'll just end up getting stabbed, shot, tasered, pepper-sprayed, or jumped by 5 bouncers & 3 police officers at my club.

@danielmountain I am a long time bouncer and advocate of diplomacy. It is our BEST weapon, but to go as faras to say it actually works on most people is a stretch. There are different types of bars and clubs therefor diferent types of bouncing. Bar bouncing usually deals with one or two customers at a time where as CLUB bouncing in certain environments may deal with LARGE groups of angry, fighting, or drugged up people. Diplomacy DOESN'T usually work there.

YET, I have never had any problems with the police because I respect their job and don't act like an ass. People don't get that you DON'T need to interact with the bouncers at all. If they behave, about all they will get is a polite "hello". I'm not there to join the party. LOL
@danielmountain (Part 2) TALKING is the number 1 assest for any bouncer but most bouncers fall into two catagories. They are all of the things that give us a bad name and overly aggressive OR they are so passive they want to talk to people who want to hurt them. In a CLUB setting, they always outnumber us, are drunk (bold) and feel that can beat our asses so they are NOT interested in Talking. The good bouncer knows when to talk and when NOT to talk.
@dcraig1865 Couldn't agree more. I've talked a few drunk people down from wanting to fight me, in my life, and I'm not even a bouncer -- just a regular person (albeit with some jujitsu training). How you talk to them is very important -- you can't be passive or aggressive. You have to be firm yet allowing them to save face and change their mind.

@zekethafreakful Ron Waterman is a big dude. he's about my height and has about 15 pounds of muscle on me. That's pretty good. As far as your boss going to clubs just to fight bouncers, I don't think that is such a good idea no matter how big you are. you'll just end up getting stabbed, shot, tasered, pepper-sprayed, or jumped by 5 bouncers & 3 police officers at my club.

yup. I agree. What goes around comes around. You attract familiarity. If you're there to a pick a fight with someone, it'll bite you on the ass. Always.
Why do guys in general do that though. Pick fights with bouncers. They always end up either in jail, or messed up.

@zekethafreakful On the other hand, I don't really have problems with big guys like that. Big guys are normally mellow & laid back (I'm from Houston TX). We big guys usually have a mutual respect for each other. It's the smaller guys with the size-complexes who think that they have something to prove.

@danielmountain I am a long time bouncer and advocate of diplomacy. It is our BEST weapon, but to go as faras to say it actually works on most people is a stretch. There are different types of bars and clubs therefor diferent types of bouncing. Bar bouncing usually deals with one or two customers at a time where as CLUB bouncing in certain environments may deal with LARGE groups of angry, fighting, or drugged up people. Diplomacy DOESN'T usually work there.

@danielmountain Thanks, respect goes a long way. I am a black man in the southern US, drive an exspensive car, and as a bouncer, I am out very late at night so I am "profiled" quite often. YET, I have never had any problems with the police because I respect their job and don't act like an ass. People don't get that you DON'T need to interact with the bouncers at all. If they behave, about all they will get is a polite "hello". I'm not there to join the party. LOL

@danielmountain (Part 2) TALKING is the number 1 assest for any bouncer but most bouncers fall into two catagories. They are all of the things that give us a bad name and overly aggressive OR they are so passive they want to talk to people who want to hurt them. In a CLUB setting, they always outnumber us, are drunk (bold) and feel that can beat our asses so they are NOT interested in Talking. The good bouncer knows when to talk and when NOT to talk.

@dcraig1865 Couldn't agree more. I've talked a few drunk people down from wanting to fight me, in my life, and I'm not even a bouncer -- just a regular person (albeit with some jujitsu training). How you talk to them is very important -- you can't be passive or aggressive. You have to be firm yet allowing them to save face and change their mind.
It really does work.

In that bar video you are talking about, that video is most for fun, but also to learn you some self defences!

To any bouncers that may be reading this: I have no doubt he is a UFC bad ass BUT as for bouncing goes, he pulled a machine down on a guy? People have died that way. And "I'll buy you a beer" WTF? I've been a bouncer for 16 years and THAT isn't bouncing. Buying a customer a beer doesn't convey, "hey, he really is cool so I will behave". it says the bouncers can't stop me so I get a free beer. DUH

He is a really cool guy, he obviously has his demons, and doesnt like being made to be the fool. But there is a violent world out there and saddly people do take advantage of their position, bouncers, security staff, military and even police. I think its good that there are people like Bas that dont allow aggressive people to bully them.
Charm is one of the best things to diffuse a conflict. If you smile and say 'come on, lets chill' but saddly that doesnt always work with some. Bas is ok.

Bas is not a bouncers asshole one of the great professional fighters but yeah not a bouncer!... To class bouncers i the same category as an ignorant asshole who knows how to fight would be wrong.A bouncer must respectful but hard keep the good patrons in an keep the shit out!!...A bouncers job is to make a social scene inviting not a mission to get into....but you know cocksuckers will always talk shit!!
