  • Ed... I love you !

  • @tunaman4u2 - Aww shucks....

  • @BassGuitarMag

I have both the 9.2 & the Streamliner... love em both... I send people to your links all the time. Great playing... great magazine too! Appreciate it. Keep rocking

  • hey ed i could really use some advice, basicly i got a jazz bass nt quite a month ago, and the setup is really frustrating me. if ihave the strings set to high i can play on it, so when i lwer them they hit the neck pickup, and when i lwer the pickeup they still sometimes hit it, als the bridge pickup is allot louder than the neck and even if i get the bridge lowenough for the strings to stop hitting it the bridge p-up doesnt go low enough to even out the volume. what d i do THANKS :)

  • @cheeseperson03 - Take it to a good repair/setup person. It will cost you a little $, but it will be worth it.

  • @BassGuitarMag ok will do, thanks

  • looove the tube channel, but with low gain.

  • Great review! The switching between solid or tube sound is very interesting. You know how to put it in words.

  • hey ed,what are those new pickups on carvin.emg?

  • @borcemiovski - No, Carvin single coils. They're nice!

  • Wonderful review, as always, Ed. Clear, concise, and excellent audio. You've sold me on the ShuttleMax series of amps, and I'll be buying a 1200 (you never know when you might need to break your neighbors' windows), but what is the optimal cabinet setup for this? I'm thinking of using a 115T-UB with either a 1288T-UQ or a 410T-UB-4 for the upper ranges. However, I'm fairly open-minded. I play mostly classic rock on a Fender fretless Jazz Bass, using Ernie Ball titanium coated slinkys.

  • I'm looking for a versatile lightweight amp. I want some tube and midrange control and an amp that sounds great out of the box too. I have a pair of Acme Low B's so I need some power to drive these cabs. This looks like the bees knees to me. I'd like to commend you on your playing too, you always inspire! Nice to see you (mostly) test driving gear using roundwounds as I know you love your flatwounds. Ed.. What monitoring (in ears) are you using? Is this one of your fav amps?

  • @Paulfga - I think you might like the 9.2, you've heard it for yourself. Also check out the Streamliner 900. I don't remember what ear buds I was using, I have some Sonys, and some Apples... nothing special anyway. This amp is a big favorite, but I like the Streamliner and Shuttle 6.0 too.

  • is that a little person with a telebass in the corner??

  • Excellent review. You have the most comprehensive and consistent bass reviews on youtube, and you do a real service to those of us watching you.

I tried one of these out at my local store and I was really blown away. I tried a number of different instruments through it, and you could really hear the subtle nuances of each bass.

If you haven't already, you should check out some Markbass gear. Markbass and Genz Benz have a similar design philosophy, and the F1/F 500 seem right up your alley.

  • Hello Ed, is there ever a chance of you doing amp reviews with a double bass also?

  • @thefid89 - I have a few small combos to review that I might play some upright through.

  • Hi Ed,

Awesome review as always. I know you're a 212 guy, so was wondering what your thoughts were regarding the Shuttlemax 9.2 into a Genz Neox 212T...?

  • @PappaK13 - Well, I haven't tried that yet, but I'm sure it will sound awesome. The Neo is my main large cab for live stuff, and I've used the 12.0, 9.0, 6.0 and Streamliner.900 through it - all with great results.

  • @BassGuitarMag Well, we probably won't have to wonder much longer since I'm about to pull the trigger on a SM 9.2... and it'll be run through a Genz Neox 212. And solely because of you (well, your sound clips), it looks like I'll also be grabbing an Eastwood Classic 4. Thanks a lot (sarcastic). lol

  • It sounds great, but just looking at it, it's so hard to believe that it cranks out 900 watts. Have you cranked it up real loud yourself? Does it do high volume well? This head almost just seems too good to be true.

  • @DevilsFourString - Well, I don't have the equipment to measure the power, but I can say it definitely gets VERY loud. It's hard to demonstrate that on video, it just distorts and over compresses after a point. To good to be true? No, it's true.

  • @BassGuitarMag

Any chance of getting a review on some Mesa gear? Like maybe the M9 Carbine? Just wishful thinking on my part probably.

  • great review!

but what is that background sound that sounds like a chinese christmas card?

  • @LarvaVengadora - It's called underscoring. You don't have to like it, it's just there to make my long-winded explanations seem more interesting. By comparison I guess.

  • Another enjoyable review. I've noticed you've settled in on the Uber 212 cabinet. Any word on a test of the Uber Quad?

  • @ButtUglyJeff - I am definitely a 212 guy, but I have played the Quad at the Bass Emporium. It's a nice cab. I hope to get one in to review at some point.

  • Man, just listening to that Carvin pump through that Genz sounds great!

  • what kind of bass is good for metal

  • Great review of the amp..... but what about the double bass through the amp? I'm look to keep up with the volume of the band ( old school blues) Any thoughts or suggestions? I appreciate your reviews ( and instructional materials) Tom

  • Is that P Bass in the background gonna get reviewed? Also, what bass and amp should I have? I play in a punk rock and post grunge band, and I like a really high agressive sound, with lots of treble and mid. At this moment, I'm thinking about an Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling HH, an Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 5 HH, a Fender Jazz Bass and a Fender P Bass, and a Mesa Boogie or this exact Genz Benz you reviewed here. Which bass and amp should I have? Thanks a lot!

  • @joaomuas11 - The Music Man stuff will have more of the tone you described. Fenders are great too - a PBass is a classic punk sound. Your choice.

Amps? Mesa makes great stuff, people that use it have good things to say about it, but I don't have a lot of experience with them, so I can't say. I do have lots with the Genz stuff, and I think it's awesome. The Streamliner is very versatile, but it is also a great choice for hard rock.

  • @BassGuitarMag Thanks! I think I'm gonna go for the Streamliner! As for the Sterling, is the B string a really great addition to the bass, or do you think I should use just 4 strings? Thanks again!

  • @joaomuas11 - Well, it's nice to have the option of a B string, but.... It depends on what YOU want. I can't tell you that, 4 or 5? Your choice.

  • @joaomuas11 The ability to go to low B is a minor advantage. The main advantage of a 5 string is it opens up more avenues for playing without having to change position. I actually have my 5 string tuned EADGC as I find the higher range more useful for expression than a low B.

  • Damn, Ed, stop playing so well; you make me want to buy everything you demo...

  • Nice review! Is there any difference in tone between the shuttle 9.0 and the 9.2?

  • @Bassplaya4string - I think the flat tone is pretty much the same, but the Max has two bands of parametric midrange, so the tonal capabilities are expanded. Also, the 3DPM in the Max does change the experience when you start cranking the amp, it's more of a "feel" thing than a "tone" thing, but... with the controls all set flat.... I'd say the 9.0 and 9.2 are very close.

  • Hi, Ed! What mic do you use for recording ?

  • @Evgene666 - A Rode NT2a

  • Hi Ed, what do you think about Gallien Krueger new Fussion tube heads? Compared to Genz Benz?

  • @krokodile - Haven't played one yet.

  • It seems that the only Amps you review are Genz Benz or Phil Jones. I'm a big fan of the Ampeg sound going back to the B15. Any chance on reviewing some of the less expensive Ampeg amps?

  • @tbcass - Mainly because these are the companies that have taken the effort to get their amps to me, and/or they were assigned by my editors. I did review (in print) an Ampeg combo amp a while back - don't remember the model, but it rattled so much I didn't do a video with it. I'm open to reviewing other amps, but they have to either be assigned by my editor, or the company has to want to hire me independently.

  • @BassGuitarMag For what it's worth I use an Ampeg B115 (2 years now) that sounds great and does not rattle at all. Great value for the money.

  • @tbcass - That's good.

  • i have the 6.0 Shuttle. would you ever use these amps as a preamp/DI for studio work? or is it worth me getting say an Avalon U5 just for sessions?

  • @subschool5 - I used my Shuttle 6.0 as a DI just the other day, it worked great. Can't compare it to an Avalon, never used one - but my common sense tells me it would be better not to have all the amp circuitry if you are just recording. A dedicated recording pre seems like the best tool for that job, but I had no complaints with the Shuttle.

  • 2nd like =]

  • first like

  • Such sick slap tone! Sorry for asking but what kind of boutique Jazz bass is that?

  • @JaydWin it looks like a Carvin SB5000, but i could be wrong.... Ed would probably correct me here :)

  • @thunderthumbs83 - you are correct!
