I can imagine what Outback would do and his relationship with Kup before he died thanks to my knowledge of the character already. Whereas if he were a generic nobody, I wouldn't care about him at all. Its been said that killing characters off prevents them from appearing in later stories but there really is enough characters to go around so that killing a character off or two for the sake of the story shouldn't be a problem (although Outback was supposed to die in Megatron Origins too).
I completely agree with both of you on the concept of generic characters not having the same impact as familar characters. My reasoning is that out of all the existing characters in Transformers already, I don't see a point in creating even more characters that nobody knows or will see again. Whereas using a familar character makes that character stick in the readers mind a lot longer. Plus if its a short cameo, you can get away with less focus upon them.
