  • Detroit is a great city to visit if you're into art or museums. The Heidelberg Project, DIA, Motown, Henry Ford museum are just a few that come to mind. Architecturally, Detroit is absolutely fabulous, Michigan Central Station and mots of the downtown core is simply stunning. The abandonment is a little spooky, but that's how things are in Detroit right now. I think they well to market themselves as a tourist destination. There really is no place like it on earth.

  • Difference between Detroit and the WTC: WTC was caused by an outside group intent on doing harm. Detroit did it to themselves.

  • Rebuild the Rust Belt in America!

  • Holly shit... Oo

I've heard things were bad in Detroit, but I've never thought that it was this bad. ... I once saw a video of mr Derrick May talking about some opera house, that is now being used as a garage. Old building, the kind of that's got really a lot of artistic value in historical meaning. I don't know about U.S. but in Europe they don't let you do shit like that. They got organisations and bunch of laws that you have to follow in order to reuse such buildings.. Its SAD

  • Whats the tune called @ 3:16 in this vid - seen it on the telly in the past & would like to obtain it. Other than that - this is our future...

  • @jkrmcguire The Supremes - Baby Love ( 1964)

  • after they burn all the house down, i guess they can grow cotton...tomatoes, collard greens, and such

i really take exception to the phrase, "whites abandoned the city for the burbs" it sounds like whites did something wrong.

actually whites ran for their lives to the burbs. i went to detroit public schools and blacks kids will pick on whites for no reason. i came to the conclusion that they were jealous of my white skin and "good hair". what a disaster my old neighborhood is. sad

  • Does anyone know what happened to the full video that was on YouTube?

  • Economics may have been the down fall of Detroit's wealth; chase whitey out & you chased out whities money & there goes Detroit's economics down the toilet. Economics isn't breaking windows, raping, robbing, stealing, killing, dealing drugs nor is it bruning down houses, garages & buildings; the population is doing "all" that & then some! So population of Detroit, how will you blame whitey for this you are doing yourselves? The world wants to know & we are waiting for your answer! Truth sucks!

  • maaaaan.. what happened

  • I thought this video was supposed to be about Detroit, not Chernobyl

  • Very similar to manned Chernobyl.

  • I really wish I could find this on DVD.....

  • How about this. If you want to sell it in America, make it in America. How the hell can the government expect its people to survive if everything is made overseas. They pay someone there less than 1/10 of what they would pay an american and then they turn around and sell it to the American people for more than 100% of what it cost to make. A government for the people....doesn't look that way.

  • Any other city would have shifted gears and rethought itself. But Detroit

is all black..and nothing can be done with that. Sorry NO SYMPATHY..you

are still lying to yourself what is really going on.

  • There is a quality about this city that is like no other. I can't put it into words because it's a feeling, it's in some way special. Don't underestimate what Detroit has given the world.

  • @Wallacer

I agree with it. Detroit a unique city. Cars which became in it in 50-70 years the most beautiful cars for all history of mankind!

  • @gh0zt36 @gh0zt36

That's my home your talking about. Detroit doesn't need or deserve to be burned down, it's full of hard, tenacious people who have a love and loyalty for their city most people will never know. There are the careless people, the dumbasses who don't know common decency - people like you; who care about things as much as it fits their own egos and persona, but for every one like you, there are two who love their city and respect their neighbors.

  • Detroit a good city. I think at it there is a big future.

  • @gh0zt36

  • the land is polluted from industrialization. They cant even do that

  • I love how about a third of the comments here can be refuted by, I don't know, actually WATCHING the documentary. Not to say that it's perfectly accurate and the "ruin porn" comment has a lot of truth to it but seriously. *rolls eyes* It's an interesting documentary in it's approach, though evenhanded is probably not on the list of its attributes. Give it a chance. At the very least it's brought a lot of the problems faced in Detroit to a wider audience and that has to count for something.

  • Wow. So, so sad.

And Kwamme Kilaptrick (former mayor) among several other officials have stolen from this city.

  • This is a bunch of shit the roads are still crammed with people.

  • WTf there is still rush hour, and it suX!!! ive driven in a bunch of traffic aroud this area

  • The techno song does anyone know the name/artist?

  • Gee, look at this winner calling someone ignorant and racist because they posed a question and then tellimg them to move to Idaho as if people from Idaho were somewhat less than what he is pretending to be.

  • @andron333 I wonder if america would be in the condition today witouth slavery. It would never have been as good as now. The system in the US needs people to be poor. Because its hard to get higher up in this system people who were poor stay poor. That are mostly blacks. Your stupid if you think that blacks are poor because they are "made" that way.

  • That town is full of nothing but vile and vicious racists. If you thought it was such a fairy tale you wouldnt be in Idaho.

  • YYea give Detroit a chance my ass.

  • Comment removed

  • @xrayamy point out to me any factual inconsistencies in my statement. People who cant advance an argument resort to screaming "ignorant" and "racist"

  • @xrayamy ... I used to live in Detroit and now live in Idaho. We have ethnic diversity here and everyone gets along just fine. I spent two years working in the inner city of Detroit helping foster kids. I never felt like I was ever in danger, the people there were always courteous and friendly. Does Detroit have more than it's share of crime? Of course it does, like any city where there are no jobs, no opportunities for people. Spend some time in Detroit before you make judgments.

  • @xrayamy Gotta love this guy. Calls someone a disgrace simply because they posed a question and then tells them to move to Idaho as if people from Idaho are in some way less than what he is posing to be. Oh the hypocrisy!

  • There are big problems here but this video looks like it was shot by a camera club art student who has too much trust fund money.

  • Its a BBC programme and you can find it on the bbc i player, totally awesome programme, watched it totally stunned, the whole city is literally gone,

  • The whole city is literally gone because some poser with a video camera decides to shoot a ruin porn documentary. You've been sitting in Starbucks too long. You had better turn off the TV and get out in the street.

  • This prove nothing last forever in this World my friend but there is better place for us all you have to do is believe.

  • @arsenalfbce lol keep believing that.. all i here is excuses buddy. DEAL WITH IT.

  • anyway why did it happen all that? for the increasing of poorness everywhere? sorry im able to write in english but i dont understand the spoken language very much, i thought detroit was one of the best city of the USA like chicago for instance even if not rich like chicago maybe cause many motor industries i know were closed

  • detroit = techno

  • Hire the people of detroit to demolish the homes, sell the materials and start gardening the land...Oh shit, that makes too much sense...nevermind.

  • @mookixox

_____The people who own the properties are sittin' on the deeds in the hope that they'll be in line for the next real-estate bubble. Oh, did I say BUBBLE out loud? I meant, BOOM. That's it. So they'll just let the junky properties sit there and just exist emptily. Meanwhile, millions of Americans go homeless and what-not. What do they care? The people who own the abandoned properties are too busy playing golf during the day while banging prostitutes and doing coke at night.

  • @mookixox everyones broke as shit. We need Eminem to sponsor it. I'd say Kid Rock, but i just dont like that guy.

  • powerful shit here i grew up in Detroit!

  • did anyone manage to rip ths? I really want to see this and I'd really like a download link for it.

  • Stupid racist mother fuckers. The problems in Detroit have nothing to do with skin colour.

  • Yes, it does. When a group of the population, all of them from the same ethnicity, starts burning the town and terrorizing its inhabitants, and that another group of the population, all from the same ethnicity too, leaves the town because they think they deserve to live in peace, it definitely does have something to do with skin color.

And what happens in Detroit is just a preview of what the whole USA will be in 2-3 decades.

  • @Galaad1 You just need to make sure you include the part where that difference in skin color and the problems created with it isn't on the side of those who "want to live peacefully." Those who really wanted to live peacefully felt they had to communicate in a language certain people only understand, violence. This is what happens when you force people into a corner.

  • It's depressing to watch this.. I come from Detroit area.. now I live in the suburbs on 17mile. The city was once so beautiful and proud and now it's a national joke - unless you actually walk around Michigan Central, or the Packord Plant you won't know the actual scale of devistation. It's too bad our state government can barely keep itself running let alone bulldoze all the crackhouses and abandonments.

  • Sad....very sad..

  • Detroit resident here: I see a lot of romanticized images (cars, Motown, etc.), but nothing about the vibrancy that remains here (i.e. its people). I would be surprised if this documentary conveyed any real understanding of how things got to where they are now, any talk about racism, segregation, and government policies.

  • and so goes America-don't worry, the traitors in Washington aren't finished yet

  • What about ICP?

  • @gbait3 Actually it was chinks that did it. They're building better cars for cheaper than your stupid city ever did. And you idiots never bothered to diversify your economy, so once your auto-manufacturing industry collapsed, you had nothing.

  • you are one typical chimp. Let's see if I got you right. The Japaneses were building better cars than a bunch of AA jungle bunnies and the factories. The niggers of course then had to shoplift the grocer out of business, bust into a couple of vacant houses and demolish them, throw trash on the ground, bust out windows on the neighbors car and just in general CHIMP OUT. Of course this isn't the nigger's fault but the fault of the people they can't compete with? TNB

  • @gbait3 I'm sorry, did GM, Ford, and Chysler suddenly become nigger-owned companies? I don't think so. I know you'd love to blame their mismanagement on the monkeys, but you can't. Well, you can, but you'll look like a dumbass. Not that you seem to have a problem with that :).

  • @Bigkahkistan Sorry, no none of those companies are nigger owned or they would have been bankrupt decades ago. What you need to understand is the conditions in this video are not a product of employment. People don't need a job to have pride. Our country founders didn't have jobs at GM but they built a country! They were homeless but they didn't destroy cites? We have heard that crap for 60 years now. It is really getting old.

  • The conditions in this video have to do with a lack of maintenance. The government has no money to maintain anything anymore because their taxbase left because THERE ARE NO JOBS. How do jiggaboos factor into this again?

It's funny you should mention "building a country". If I remember correctly, much of it was accomplished through nigger slave work. Ironic, huh?

  • they destroy all if them cant work

  • Winnipeg, Canada is like Detroit of USA.

  • result of african rule. Plain and simple.

  • @mcnabj

The shit storm started when the factories opened

the doors for the southern black workers.

  • @Jimthere3 Detroit is the first in along string of cities that will crumble. Where will all the welfare ricipients move to next? They are like leeches, they need a host to bleed for their existence.Without working people, the welfare dries up, without welfare leeches look for a new host.

  • Wrong! It started when the first slave ship hit our shores. Don't you wish someone would have intercepted them and sunk em? Thanks for sharing, every American should see what is coming to a city near them. Smaller cities have rehab departments that use your tax dollars to keep their "cribs" up to date but when the population exceed the handout this is what you get. As they produce like rabbits every place they infect will be just like this.

  • Hey I was wondering.....if they told buttcrack they'd build this back with good union workers wouldn't he send them a dump truck load of our money? Or how about this tell the good union people the rehab money is coming but they need to move in. When they do the hommies start shooting good union people, good union people start shooting hommie....presto alot of bad problems solved. Maybe buttcrack will stop by for a photo op and we get a huge tax benefit.

  • Superb documentary and a fascinating view of what happens when you govern a city\country with a laissez fair attitude that hands total control over to the strongest corporations.

Once again the ordinary people are left holding the shit stick while the corporate bandits run off with the loot (Wall St\City of London engineered credit crisis anyone?).

I hope Detroit's green aspirations work out for them, judging from this documentary the people there could do with a real change of luck.

  • where can i download the movie?

  • Further, in every country in the world can you tell where you are just by looking at the cars on the street...except in America. A job lost in the auto industry and replaced by one at companies like WalMart represents erosion of the key to our national economy: consumer purchasing power. We are systematically exporting our American wealth. Even with a "Lexus Made in America" all profits go to Japan. And it looks like they're not spending it on Quality Control.

  • Suburban Detroit is 5.8 Million people. But the city is still our nucleus. Can you imagine how many businesses and jobs have been lost to create that devastation? While worse off than most, Detroit is not alone. Americans as a country don't seem to realize how much work there is to be done at home. Can we afford to be the the worlds Philathropist or Policeman much longer? Awareness from abroad doesn't go far. BBC: please release across the pond!

  • Great point, no we cannot afford to be police now much less any longer. The problem I see here isn't related to jobs or job loss. You don't need a job to know not to break into your neighbors house, not to burn down someones buildings, not to break the windows our of other peoples homes and not to burn cars in the street. That all comes under the heading of being a decent human being worth the privilege of living in this great country. These good citizens need to be shipped to Mexico.

  • Great shots in this. It's sad to see such a great American city in this shape and everyone in America just seems to be content to let it lay in ruins.

  • Count me in the list of American's content to let the people that did this live in this. Screw them and all the excuses they make for being the scum of the earth. They deserve it.

  • how about you live in detroit and know what you're talking about before you go calling detroiters scum. a lot of us are doing everything we can to build this city back up out of the ashes.

  • The BBC only scratched the surface here.

I would have loved it if they'd have loaned me a camera, I'd have showed them or filmed stuff that is unbelievable.

If they weren't on Prozac, they would be by the time we were done.

  • jazzieeb - i live in a Detroit suburb. There a very, very few positives, if any.

This guy asks where the sympathy is for Detroit. There isn't any because the people and politicians did this themselves. It wasn't terrorists or a hurricane.

Detroit is a shithole and always will be unless the people actually start caring and stop killing each other.

  • I would discourage your last thought from being implemented. If they continue to kill each other eventually you'll get a handle on the destruction and crime. Be thankful for what you've got.

  • i said earlier you should live in this city before you knock it. but i guess you do, sad that you have no hope. if you hate it so much why don't you try to get involved and do something like many of us are, or move out.

  • Come to Detroit....we'll give you the real tour. You have to see it person to believe it. Its almost surreal. We are the city that the USA forgot....

  • damn... this real.. its sad how detroit is today...

  • Amazing documentary. Sure there are negatives, but the positives are there too. A must see.

  • I enjoyed this

  • This a skewered view with nothing but the negatives. This could be in any major urban area. Not impressive at all. There are problems, but there are a lot of positives as well.

  • That's why you need to see the whole film.

  • It's thinking like yours Jimmywhite that not only holds cities, states & countries back, but the whole world. I feel very sorry for you!

  • @jimmywhitepride poor whites have a lawn mower

  • Good call jimmy.

  • saw it last weekend on the BBC, impressive, very impressive.

  • Great documentary. Does anyone know what the music is after lose yourself, after 2:40?

  • The electronic piece that is used throughout the film is Packard by Architeq and is taken from the Birds of Prey EP.

  • Sweet, cheers.

  • where can this be found? the "real" bbc isnt available here, tried the torrents?any suggestions?links?

  • New Julien Temple documentary...worth tracking down...
