Thanks for the memories! I'm really loving all the -135 videos on YT. My last flight as a boom was in April '88 at K.I. Sawyer....long before the days of "glass cockpits" and only a few units flew R-models. I knew a young navigator named Twain Mobley while stationed at Ellsworth in the early 80's. Are you related?
Nice Vid! Im a half year away from graduating with my Bachelors degree in aviation and I am hoping to fly these in the Air Guard at Rickenbacker AFB. Any suggestions???
@19Pilot Do you know anyone currently flying with the unit at Rickenbacker? Have you made contact? It's a good idea to start working with them as early as possible, as competing for and securing a pilot slot may take years.
@htmobley Yes I do know a pilot at Rickenbacker and I have stayed in contact with him for almost a year. I have visited him there and met some other people as well. All I have to do now is take the AFOQT and TBAS and I'll be ready to go.
@EPICwhalezz --- It depends on many factors. When will the replacement tanker come on line? Will the tanker develop any major grounding problems (corrosion problems seem to be a hot topic). Even if some were to be sent to the boneyard, I believe that a good portion will continue to fly for 20-30 more years.
@fernanties - From my perspective, you are correct - OTS is the hardest route because once the number of SUPT slots are decided - the Academy takes the first cut, whatever is left goes to ROTC, and whatever is left then - goes to OTS. If you can't/don't want to do the Academy, then try and find a good AF ROTC program. I chose to go in as a Nav first, and competed for slots once I was in - I don't recommend that way.
@htmobley I'm 25 and a recent college graduate. I'm also in the Air National Guard. I'll be applying for various guard and reserve slots and also active duty (OTS). I definately do not have the time for Nav at 25, but I'm glad to hear it worked out for you.
Hey Twayne! Thanks for posting the video. Really brings back the memories. I've obviously been gone from the unit too long already. Couldn't tell offhand who either one of the pilots were. Enjoyed watching a tanker takeoff though.

When are the USAF planning on retiring the KC-135?

@EPICwhalezz I'm told from a few Air Force personnel that the last pilot to fly it, isn't even born yet...

@nscoulter
lol.. typical.. I also heard the last C-17 crew will be flown home in a C-130... its all ego.
The initial strategy is the 135 fleet going to the Reserves while the KC-767 is brought into Active service. Once the
KC-X is finished, KC-Y will come online, and the best chance it will be the KC-777, since the 767 can not come close to the capacities of the KC-10's

Cool, what happened to the HAZARD callsign?

That was our cross-country call sign. Our local call sign is Jake.

Is this an E? I thought only the R's had the glass cockpit upgrades but those sound like Pratts to me.

It's an R. No EPR gauges at the top of the engine instrument stack. I flew with TF-33 engines for many years and the roar is noticeably higher.

too bad you forgot the flaps

What makes you think that? The flaps were set for takeoff and were retracted on schedule...

@htmobley did you attend usafa? or did you do afrotc?
tvk331 2 years ago
Neither. I made my decision to fly in my Junior year in college, so I went through the third commissioning source, OTS.

@htmobley wow, thats great, i think i am going to do afrotc. congrats you must be proud of yourself

@htmobley I've heard that OTS is the hardest route to getting a slot, any advice on how you made it?
