  • if thats what you like it sounds great, if u want a drty as hell full tone then perfect! (i like alot). could also be the speaker. maybe a g12-75 will clean it up!

  • i like the muddyness dude!!!

  • Just a brief aside: If you don't have money, time or expertise for mods, the Boss SuperOD pedal REALLY makes this amp come alive (and kills the mud... well, mostly). Fuzz boxes and regular distortion pedals only worsen the mud. Just speculating, but I think it's because the OD makes the higher overtones cut through the bottom.

  • The chasis is the exact same so it will work just as well on a combo.

  • Any amp will play any style but this one is mainly geared for blues, rock'n'roll, classic rock and rockabilly.

  • OMG that's muddy ... i usually don't dislike muddy tones , but those ones ... and you have a telecaster . i just can't imagine how muddy it may sound with a lespaul ^^'

  • blue anico's are not exactly the brightest speakers on the market...

  • Hey im thinkin of purchasing this head with the matching epi junior cab... does this amp have enough volume and can it handle say metal zone pedal ? please reply :)

  • That's a very nice tone for stoner rock / metal. I'd just pump the gain, roll of the tone a bit, switch to my singlecoils, and it would sound a little like this. But if it really does sound like this, I can't use it for anything else without modding it...

  • turn the thing down and it will clear up

  • will the amp loose volume after the jp1 mod?

  • can this play metal? just asking

  • Not alone, but some pedals will get you there.

  • I simply use a Metal Muff pedal it it works just fine. Im sure any metal overdrive/distortion pedal will have the same result.

  • yes and no

  • probably not, it's an el84 power tube not really made for metal. i'm sure if you got a pedal for it and mabe an eq also. then you would be good

  • sure, if you buy a metal pedal and keep the amp volume low so it doesn't break up. This would NOT be a good amp for metal

  • Absolutely, if you overdrive it. It's either the speaker or the miking muddying it up here, but this amp sounds great live. I play a strat through it w/ stock single-coils, & I don't get any flubbiness. Live, it's all just early breakup & a good blues tone.

  • ...The neck pickup gets a thick bass response, & the bridge sounds like early 70's rock. Crank it & run a Boss SuperOD in front (which brightens the tone anyway,) & you get a great overload you can actually shred with. Almost makes it sound like a "brown" Vox combo, if that makes any sense.

  • @4everRock666 thats a stupid question

  • @4everRock666 with a good distortion pedal it sounds great

  • can i do the mods with the combo version?

  • gobby just wants to sell some mods 2 u.

  • put seem decent tubes in there gobby

  • Great sound for Stoner rock IMHO.

  • "...a tone in search of an identity..."

that's putting it kindly. this has got to be the worst tone i've ever heard. period.

  • dang thats muddy sounds alot better with the jumper mod

  • i hav found the same thing with fender stile guitars but when i playd my les paul thrue it it sounded cristal clear. go fugure.

  • Ouch...that's muddy!

  • That's what I hear also. Thanks for the comments!

  • I will more than likely make videos on all the mods you listed. They are the popular ones, so, yes - they require special attention. Thanks for the comments!

  • Absolutely the OT replacement is a must. I only want to go mod by mod so one can distiguish clearly the tonal difference. That's why I left the Sovtek tubes in it for now.

And YES! I will make a video on safety. I already have a blog post on it but a video will be very useful. Thanks!

  • In fact it is not mine - Lol. A friend borrowed it while my LP is being worked on. Thanks!!

  • if anyone can mod that thing to sound incredible, you can Gabi. Good to see ya playing a tele.

  • Thanks, Ed! Yes, this incredible cheap amp can become a serious tool in a guitarist arsenal!

    Thanks for the comment!

  • You've gotta make a single-ended Low-carb. Just stick the preamp from the low-carb in there, and leave the power amp as a single-ended el84. That'd be killer.

  • Oh, by all means. The only thing is to find a decent output transformer. I still need to test a few to have an idea. Thanks for the comment!

  • Keep me posted, that's be my dream amp. My Voxer is still too loud for the stages I play, so a single-ended 7-10 watt low carb would be perfect. You rock Gabi

  • Great Idea Gabi

  • True - it is not a bad tone. After all it is tube overdrive. The thing is that I am spoiled with high-end tone and I always use that as a reference. The thing is that this amp can be modded to become a tone machine.
