The color of the set (and costumes) is a bit too depressing (outside the rainbow of course)==they needed to open it up with either different paints or light spots or a little glitter ( I do like the textures, however). The over use of dark grey is just too much--but this production set is jolly compared to the depressing trash of 'concept directors' of today. The inmates are running the asylum.
Fabulous--but you should all know that Wagner took great liberties with Nordic legends to fashion his immortal operas. In operas the gods are thieving and greedy. In the legends and in today's Asatru following, they are wise and represent good qualities (ie hospitality and honesty)--and they did not die out at the end of Gotterdammering. They are still with us!!!
The most magic moment of the whole Ring cycle is when Donner summons the vapors and swings his hammer to build Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge. Epic! He seems to be the only one who is not involved in all the treachery and hypocrisy.
Tolkien was certainly inspired by the Rheingold opera. It would be the perfect music for the Silmarillion!
The Met Ring was a wonderful prod.--a beautiful blend of minimalist & tradition that Wieland W. would have loved--- tons better than the modernist crap out of Bayreuth. In tune w what the master felt about his productions. Alas! no 1 wants myth or taste anymore!! ITs all about a 'concept'--Wotan businessmen in 3 piece suits & Brunnhilde hookers in flack jackets. Lets not even go into the sets--they are modern horrors which don't even come close to fitting the mythos of the librettos/music
The Met ought to be ashamed, replacing this wonderful production, the only one of all the world's major opera houses (including Bayreuth) that is faithful to Wagner's intentions.
These so called consept offerings we get can be consigned to the junk heap where they belong as far as I'm concerned - nothing more than an ego trip for some jumped up producer who probably doesn't know the first thing about the opera in the first place.
the BEST Das Rheingold finally on DVD. this 1990 Metropolitan Opera production, which aired on PBS, hooked me on Wagner three decades ago.
can't beat James Morris, Christa Ludwig, Ekkehard Wlaschiha, Siegfried Jerusalem, Kurt Moll and Jan-Hendrik Rootering with James Levine conducting the Met Orchestra.
as for Loki = Gollum, I would say it's more the evil dwarf Alberich = Gollum in the ring cycle.
@windstorm1000 Yes, the government should do something to stop what is happening in Bayreuth and Covent Garden. New laws should be in place to ensure high standards in productions for this great music.

I don't know ... Loge looks more like a burn victim rather than a demigod. Should have worn a blonde wig.

@LeRinkRat The one with Birgit Nilsson as Brunnhilde, and George London as Wotan is the best!

@LeRinkRat It is the best isn't it. Puts to shame the modernist horror prod.'s in Baryeuth (ironically) and elsewhere.

@Nibelungenherr1876 He's got a little Gollum thing going on there
Mirani2 7 months ago
@Mirani2 maybe a little. I'm thinking Loki doesn't quite fit the Lord of the Rings comparison so well. He's more like Morgoth from the Silmarillion.
Neibelung is Gollum or my name is Harry Freakin' Potter.
