do you know what the colouring of your hedgehog is, such as cinnamon, chocolate, salt and pepper or otherwise? I love the colour and I'm getting a hedgehog soon
I have a hedgie Jazz!lets just say it is hard to get her out of her cage after that she will crawl over you lol one time she was on my back lucky my friend was able to get jazz!
@thealsomeness allso dont get a wired one, they can climb up it fall down and hurt them selves. you want a plastic roof one. as far as ive heard anyway.
In general, they are fairly easy to take care of but beware and be warned...in order to keep them socialized requires that you take them out of their cage everyday for at least one hour. Otherwise, you will end up with a huffy puffy ball of spikes.
"Hedgehogs are illegal in the entire state of California. California has a law that deems all animals not specifically listed as legal under State law as being illegal by default. Until such time as California's Department of Fish and Game is willing to consider hedgehogs for legal status, they will continue to be considered contraband pets and may be confiscated and either moved out of state or destroyed" (Hedgehog Central).
I'm sorry. I was reading through the comments. Where did you find a wheel that doesn't have the wire holes in it? I don't want izzys little feet to get stuck and hurt her. I'd feel awful if that happened. Maybe
A bucket wheel is without a doubt the best. The only place to get these types of wheels are through a breeder or someone who makes them...OR you could make one yourself of course!
I do know no direct sunlight, I keep the house dark, I know what to feed her, mainly good kitty food, carrots, etc. I'm working on getting a bigger cage. Will she chew through plastic like they have at pet stores? And I know she needs a bath like once a month right? Sorry to ask so much. I just want to give her the best home possible.
She will not chew through the plastic. However, my suggestion would be to build a C&C cage.
Furtheremore, how often you give a hedgheog a bath will vary depending on how fast and how dirty they get. (Some hedgehogs require their feet to be cleaned every day whereas others only once a week. In general though, a good scrub down once a month is ideal in addition to the frequent cleaning of their poopy feet!)
Also, you do not want to keep her in a location that is consistently dark. You want it to be light during the day and dark at night...just as it would be outside in the wild for them.
Consistency in lighting is also helpful as it helps them to establish a routine.
I just recently rescued a hedgehog. She belonged to my younger brother and he didn't know how to care for her and I'm home all the time so I figured is give her a better chance at a good life. Lol she is very tempermental. She constantly hisses. Maybe she's not used to me yet? And how do I get her used to me? I try to "play" or let her roam the house for exercise and get use to surroundings but nothing is working yet... if you have any suggestions id love to hear them.
Check out the forum at Hedgehog Central. You will find many suggestions and tips on how to socialize your hedgehog. (If you have any questions you cannot find answers to, send me an email and I will gladly answer any questions you may have).
Every week or two is perfectly fine. When I say bath I do not necessarily mean a full out bath. A hedgehog's feet need to be cleaned every week or two as they defecate and urinate in their wheels and then run through it.
I do, however, give all of my hedgehogs a full bath once a month with an oatmeal based soap. In addition, I apply Vitamin E oil to their skin after I bathe them.
Every hedgehog is different so modify bath time to meet the needs of your spikey little friend!
Hedgehogs are very clean and have no odour whatsoever so long as you bathe them every week or two, spot clean their cages daily, and change the liners/bedding at least once a week.
In addition, reducing odors can also be achieved by litter training.
Do you mind tellign me, how do you get yoru hedsgehog accustomed to yo uand his/her surroundings? I had mien for a week and just began to try and socialize w/ him. I did the scent trick where I put articles of clothing in his hide, but it appears he doesn't really like to move around until everything is all peaceful (no TV on and all lights, including desk lamps, turned off). I understand they're nocturnal, but my hedgey won't walk about unless all lights (even TV and PC lights) are off.
Absolutely not!! All my hedgehogs are socialized and thus friendly. However, they do have their off days where they get all huffy puffy but even then getting poked really doesn't bother me! (btw...I have a high tolerance to pain so I may not be the best person to be asking!)
Hedgehogs certainly are legal in North Carolina! Check out Hedgehog Central for a list of breeders.
As for the cost of a hedgehog...that depends on many factors such as the breeder, colour, and gender. However, some breeders have flat rates for males and females regardless of their colour. It just depends.
Where I live there are many wild hedgehogs. I was once driving in my car and saw a hedgehog in the middle of the street. I instantly pulled over and took off my scarf to wrap it around him. I carried him back into the deep forrest and told him to never walk back on the street again! :)
@xXMrGreenEyes24Xx Same could you tell me what is your state? if yours is same as me i got a breeder but i not very sure since i havent order anything form him yet
I just bought a hedgie yesterday and we had a great first night. He was happy i think because of his constant purring but he still wont let me pick him up. He keeps rolling up and huffing. What can i do to make this less frequent?
I just recently also bought a hedgehog from our local pet store, he was covered in his own feces and not cared for properly either and I just couldn't say no to him! He too is terrified and hisses and doesn't come out of his little ball really at all when I try to take him out. Just wondering what you did to help your hedgehog socialized and timid around people
@dizzydan2 it can hurt, but it all depends. if the hedgehog is happy, calm and relaxed, then it shouldn't hurt one bit. However, if the hedgehog is angry or scared, then it will hurt. That is their main sorce of self-defence after all. :3 As for biting: It does hurt, but it's nothing serious.
Hedgehogs do have spikes, and yes, they can be sharp, but usually not sharp enough to really hurt unless you're pressing on too hard (which would probably hurt the hedgehog too). As long as you're gentle, you don't get hurt.

Size varies. I have had hedgehogs who were as small as half a pound in weight to larger ones (like Barley) who were one pound.
Hedgehogs are legal in all of Canada. For a list of places where they are legal/illegal you can check out Hedgehog Central's website.
