The very first Showcase issue of MM made no references to any super-heroes. Each one might have tried their hand at fighting the flying monster. Yet they became part of the mainstream DC universe. They were meant for only one story, but the artist/writer team did 4 stories. Then the votes came in.
In issue #1 the Missile Men did 1000 times as much death & destruction as 9-11, and the Metal Men all failed. Yet Dr. Magnus managed to win the day.
Comic book Super hero groups Justice Society 1940, All winners 1946, Justice 1960, Fantastic Four 1961, Metal Men 1962, Mighty Crusaders also in 1962, Doom Patrol in 1963, and Avengers and Xmen later in 1963, Transformers 1984 (cartoon), Voltron(1984 cartoon) both would also later appear in comic books.
