Where on earth are the comments about THE LEGEND Mike Hailwood who saved a drivers life in F1, and won the Bike Grand Prix championships many times, (now known as MotoGP). He was killed in 1980.
These are unforgettable memories for me personally and I'm sure younger viewers can appreciate the skill and bravery of this (mostly dead) bunch of men.
It is really great to be able to re-live this fantastic historic race again, it brings emotional tears to my eyes to see this video series! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
I was lucky enough to have been there in person in 1969 and witness sports car history being made! It's hard to truely relay to others how fantastic this race & the Le Mans experience in general was. Now I can show them! ps - I read in Stars & Stripes a few days later that Ickx actually drove the winning car home after the race!!!
Contrary to what the narrator, Maxwell Boyd, said, this was NOT the first time the same car won at LeMans twice. Wolf Barnato drove the same Bentley Speed Six to victory in both 1929 and 1930.
It's amazing to see a new Ford GT on the road today. The overall body design is the same as the GT40's (except now they're bigger) but it's such a contemporary design that there's no need for further development. As far as styling goes, it may as well have been designed yesterday.
WOOOW i have only hird about this epic race in the past and now thanks to you Uploader i get to see it...thank you verry much for this part of motorsport history shared with us.
I am just glad such great footage of such a classic era in the sport still exists...what classic work the Porsche's and Ford's of that period were, and what a great race. Ickx cool as they ever came as always....but I wonder if there would have been grumbling about his "relaxed" starting style if he had lost by seconds? :-) He was always a great driver under pressure though...
this is the race and the gt40 and the porche 917 are what hooked me on racing. Still the greatest race I have seen. Too bad in those days you only were able to see a few hours at best on us tv.
Both cars are engineering marvels...Porsche for layout and suspension, GT40 for sheer power and looks. Both cars have magnificent racing history...what an historic race, being there would have been awesome.
The GT40 was the last at the star but the first at the ending . Icx din´t run , he did walk , he did express disapproval for unsafe star. The day before he crashed his Porsche but the seat belt did safe him
This was the closest finish in Le Mans history, the first of 6 wins for Jacky Ickx, and the only Le Mans win for Jackie Oliver. He was a good driver who deserves greater recognition.
You've got to remember that the GT40 by that stage was an old car compared to the latest Porches and the like but those lovely Ford V8's certainly helped
i think the word your searching for is OBSOLETE haha...the ickx/olivers driving was truly something but to be considered a porker, down on power compared to the porsches and yet never skip a beat. The GT 40, namely the Mk. II & IV have to go down as one of greatest race cars of all time. Def top 10
LeMans, like Indy has lost it's luster over the years. The Mulsanne straight now has chicanes in it and there isn't the classic start. I hope some way they organizers can return to the good old days of endurance racing.
I hate when everything is nowadays about safety, safety and safety, but you realise how fast modern prototypes could go if it still was 5 km straight? even modern safety is no use when you're going 400 mk/h.
And the Le Mans start was already abandoned in 1970, and that hardly has any meaning.
I think Le Mans incredibly well retained all the aspects, there is still nothing quite like Le Mans.
I agree. The media isn't giving it the exposure it once had. I remeber as a kid here in the states that ABC telecast the race. Even it was taped delayed, it was a pleasure to watch it. Your point is well-respected. I wish all the major manufacters, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Ferrari, Aston-Martin etc. were deeply involved

The big stars should have been the holman moody team

Holman -Moody wasn't a factor after 1967.
They did the engine work.

lol 5:01 to 5:06 the [hotographer gets right beaten up by the porsche engineer lol....GT40'S RULE
meepmeepjeep 4 years ago
lol the porsche engineer beating the photographer was funnny!!!! lool
but gt 40's couldn't handle as good as half the gt1 class. they just had a strong engine.

Well he was outbreaking the porsche near the end there.
Benefit187 2 years ago
that's becasue a faulty brake light led the Porsche driver to belive his brakes were gone, which caused him to drive conservitavely.
