Listen up ok....THERE ARE 2 SIDES TO EVERYTHING.

Yes our planet is getting hotter but there still has to be somewhere for the cold temperatures to go. So the more heat that is applied to our planet the more focused the cold temps will be on strange locations.

Eventually what's going to happen is all the cold temps will break lose and try to regain ground and when it does you will be looking at a new ice age.

Nothing unusual if you takes a long enough time series.

It's actually nothing at all to worry about.

The biggest worry is as it begins to cool, (which it will), and perhaps continues to cool further.

Warm is good, cold is bad.

its 86 degrees in the middle of winter in los angeles and its going to be above 80 for the rest of the week. last week it was cold for LA standards and next week will be back to the cold and im i sure once again it will be hot at the end of the month this pattern has been going on since this summer cold hot cold hot cold hot

Matilda was a wind turbine located on Gotland, Sweden. It produced a total of 61.4 GWh in the 15 years it was active. That is more renewable energy than any other single wind power turbine had ever produced to that date.

Sounds impressive...

61.4GWh. What does that really mean?

The Drax station produces that in 15Hrs 21Mins.

15 years, let's take that as 365.25 days/Yr by 24 Hrs/day = 131490Hrs

61.4/131490/1000 to give MW = continuous output 0.4669MW.

Not so impressive!

So that's 1MW. Given the age, that would be the rated output.

Wind turbines rarely achieve rated output!

Just multiplying hours turning by rated output does not give the total power output in GWh.

It's far more likely to average about 50% of that so the real output was probably 30.7GWh which would make the continuous output calculated .23345MW

Less impressive!

.23345/15000 = 0.1556kW per home

or 3.735kWh.

So that's 8000 Wind turbines to MAYBE get near that one coal fired power station.

What would they be on a Worldwide grid?

It would take 400 2.5KW wind turbine running at peak capacity with no breaks in wind to replace ONE Drax coal fired power station.

Unfortunately, they only work ~25% of the time & then not always at peak!

So spread four times that number plus some margin, say 2000 2.5KV turbines across Europe to replace ONE coal fired power station! (If you're lucky.)

Does that sound reasonable?

Not to me, because in fact you'd need far more to cover increased transmission losses.

The wind turbines in the UK have been non-functioning in most places due to lack of wind. This is attributable to the reason it's so damned cold here, high pressure areas.

So now, what we've all known for years, wind power doesn't work when you need it, (when it's cold,) where DOES our energy come from when we need it?

Sorry I should have said how much is claimed to be saved. I understand that the total life cycle cost is higher than energy produced. I saw a Danish (?) report some time back that claimed a rather quick pay back on energy investment but the accounting was somewhat strange.

I do know that the Danes don't actually use theirs. If they actually manage to produce any power, that power is sold on to neighbouring countries.

The Germans have halted their wind program & I believe the Danes have too.

One thing I find odd about the ice. The Alarmist claim new ice is thinner.I always was with the belief that water freezing at -30c for 6 months would be the same thickness as water freezing at -30C for six months! After all Every winter the our sea waters are frozen and thicker or thinner depend on how many days of cold weather we get. That's how we know when the ice will be gone each spring. Once in 1998 the ice came off March 29..all other years it as been April 15 to 19

The reason is, second year ice, (that which didn't melt from the previous years freeze) accumulates both on it's undersurface AND through precipitation on its upper surface.

This makes it thicker & less likely to melt the next year.

One thing warmists won't tell people not in the know is this.

The Arctic ice is NOT melted by the atmosphere. (It doesn't get warm enough).

It is melted by warm currents from the South from the underneath and by sublimation from the top. That's why the warm PDO was so important to melting the Arctic for the last 30 years.

Sublimation can be seen by warming solid Iodine. It will be observed that it goes straight from solid to vapour which you can see. That is not melting.

It is NOT caused by greenhouse gasses!

The reason is that greenhouse gasses would cause MELTING by warming the surface, sublimation is caused by higher frequency radiation in the visible spectrum.

By sticking with the terminology "Global Warming" we are just avoiding the real issue. Our way of living has a huge effect on the earth and no matter what the temperature of the planet, it's still in trouble. I'm sick of this debate becoming a battle of semantics... if you don't care about the earth than maybe you care about people. And the truth of the matter is that we are using up our resources so quickly that if we don't change they may only last another 2 or 3 generations.

It is generally accepted that CO2 can only generate a temperature of 1 deg F per doubling. With feedbacks from the major GHG, (H2O), it is likely to be LESS, NOT more!

Nothing about reducing CO2 is going to make a whit of difference about clean air or water. We've been cleaning up our air and water in the US for many years. We're much better off than we were 30 years ago in that respect. Part of that is because a lot of our heavy industry has gone overseas, just shifting the problem elsewhere.

However, most of us are still looking short-term. I remember as a kid (the 70s) that we were heading into an ice-age. We are changing light bulbs but the new ones that contain mercury. I don't want to smell CO2 coming from exhaust pipes, but the energy from electric cars is normally generated from fossil fuel generators.

I think studies should continue because we just don't know.
