that first throw by matsuda is unbelievable, i've watched in ten times and still dont know how he countered that guys o goshi, well it looks like o goshi i could be wrong.
Did you notice something about the length of their kimono (gi)? It is short by today's standards (in the arms). In a competition they would be disqualified ... I wonder when this rule was changed.
yeh i know this is a strange way to ask for advice on my uchi mata, but more often than not i just slam my leg into peoples nuts.... and while this may be effective in the street, its crap in judo... im tall and a bit of a noob, any tips!?!
@maskdesmith77 learn O goshi first you can so can get the movement. Then try harai goshi and if that's easier use it. Check if you getting your hips to far across because it puts your leg in the wrong spot causing you to kick them. Or it could be your off balancing of them is not right.
Try getting them to move toward you, and try to break them down so
they will try to get back standing up right.
When they come up go in on it cuz it will help lift them.
That's true JU, using an opponent's force agains them. Far too many times, and I'm the first to admit guilt to it, but Judoka will use their hips to check or back away form a movement, instead of take advantage of it. Look at what effect we waste, this is where Judo needs to get back to
I don't know crap about judo, though I think it's awesome. Nevertheless it comes to me as a surprise that there is so much praise towards the first movement! from an mma perspective I would say that it did not really accomplisj anything useful :S can someone please explain it to me ? tomorrow I will start taking some judo on my college, so I would love to get a good grasp of the concepts. thx!
Hmm, i think from a mma perspective you could explain the move like this. Person one attempts a takedown using a hip throw from a clinch.
The other person's takedown defense is so good that he can counter using uchimata (i believe i have seen karo parisyan doing it, just awesome). Due to the throw, person 1 ends on his back, and person 2 has the mount. If person 2 also has some proficiency in submission or ground and pound and is able to keep the mount, it would be a winning move.
In mma it's what works easy and fast. Judo takes time to develop as a good technique. Everyone mostly in mma just goes for double legs and single legs. Not much technique there. Judo and MMA are 2 different worlds living in the same dimension.
@charliemurphyslaw Well, no one in MMA is just one style anymore. But Fedor's throws come form Judo, you can say sambo if you want too...but in the end they're basically all the same.
The benefit is that the move gets your opponent on the ground. In organized judo competitions, that's enough to win a title. From an MMA perspective, you're right; just don't let him get back up.
Uchi Mata and Harai Goshi were my two favourite throws. That 1st clip evading the throw and catching the guy with Uchi Mata was stunning. Judo is so graceful and yet very powerful at the same time.I practise Karate now but Judo will always be closer to my heart. My dad trained with Geesink in the 60's. Judo is awesome.
so koga's judo is not on this level? man, you've got no idea what you'r talking about at all! koga's judo is awesome, don't you dare comparing him to teddy rhiner!
Great vid, I've actually seen this documentary before haha. I got it from mma tracker ;). I didn't like it that much though, alot of cheesiness, especially the 50s swing music. I know it was to set a mood, but it really killed it for me :p/

Eh, only b/c MMA in the States is dominated by wrestlers. Take a look at MMA throughout the world.
Yoshida, Mitsumira, Karo, and yes, Fedor, are all Judoka -- and they use Judo to devestating effect.

@nsquidc fedor isnt just a judoka so you cant credit all of his wins to just judo. He also does sambo.

@Kenyawn well guessing it would be hard to do, considering its lots of throws which might be tricky to get a flow right for action scene..
