There is a suggestion that many Coalition forces are there purely to please what is mainly an American crusade. So their soldiers try to keep safe in their barracks/to minimize political sensitive casualty figures back home. Some vids say there is a gas pipeline to be built or something, that 's why Afghanistan must be conquered. Hell, why can't they be bribed for it instead ?

Engagements with the Taliban end up with Coalition troops shooting at unseen gunmen in the hills, air strikes have little effect, and death usually comes in the form of IEDs, which devastates morale. Sure there was technology which was made to disable IEDs, but then the Taliban adapted and made it so their bombs were actually triggered by these devices.

The US military won every battle with the Vietcong and NVA, and Saigon only fell in 1975 after American troop levels had been reduced from 475,200 to 50 and North Vietnam violated the 1973 Paris Peace Accord. American politicians couldn't take them taking them on, but the military didn't lose a single battle to the NVA or Vietcong.

In the mid-to-late '80s, we started to form an alliance with the Chinese against the Russians. We even sold them some Blackhawks and other military hardware. But then the fall of the Berlin wall combined with the Tiananmen Square massacre to make the Chinese a bad bet, and the military cooperation pretty much stopped. The point is, at the time of the movie, it was a pretty good bet that China would side with us against the USSR.

No. China was an ally until Mao decided that the USSR was a 'revisionist' socialist state. Then China became its own man (although it tried to make an alliance with Albania, which also split off for the same reason). China then made friends with Nixon, as you may remember. And China wasn't an ally of the Soviet Union 1983. By that time, it was as much opposed to the Soviet Union as the US was.
