I'm a reader but I hate waiting for TPB. I buy my comics on release day every week. Cousins, nephews, nieces and friends always come and it's inevitable that they will bend the comics/slightly rip them.
What do you call a person that collects certain comics as a fan of that comic but buys other comics more for just the story?
For example i buy and always WILL buy Wonder Woman comics because i am a FAN of Wonder Woman and will buy regardless of the artist and writers opposed to Green Lantern comics where i will buy them just for the story to read and i wouldn't mind giving it away after im done.
@MyNamesAlan Yeah, find a super hero, writter, artist, etc.... you like and just purchase one or more. Noone can tell you what book to start with, because of you own tatse. Your bets bet to buy is go to a comic book store, they have a bigger selection to choose from, but if all else fails your local book store will do.
I'm pretty much all of these, other than speculator. I collect comics mainly to keep up with the story and appreciate it as an art form and I love how it is relevant with todays society, but I also am driven by the fact that I want all of the comics in a certain series (right now it's mainly ASM), and while doing this I keep a look out for the older comics from that series (my main objective as of noe is to obtain "The Night Gwen Stacy Died"). Thumbs up if you are like this as well. :P
I almost forgot. A true collector doesn't sit at a computer and buy all their books on E-bay. We will go out into the real world and hit Yard sales, Flea markets, Book stores, and so forth and so on looking for the books we don't have
@cpg0519 That's so true, I hit up used book stores, many different comic book stores, flea markets, conventions, and if really can't find it, I use the internet.
A collector will have his/her own personal resources from which they choose to COLLECT what ever it is they are COLLECTING to build there COLLECTION and it doesnt matter where the COLLECTOR buys the material from because what he is trying to do is COLLECT.
An investor can not be a collector because they only pick up books inhopes it with allow them to retire early. Speculators are basicly the same as the investor. A reader can be a collector as long as they keep the book(s) they buy.
I am sorry, but I have to say this. There is only one type of colletor! I am a "old School collector I collect The Flash. I did get caught up in the down fall of this great industy of the late 80's and mid 90's when a huge nuhmber of titles had five different covers (Robin 2, X-Men) or foil covers (Silver Sable) and so on. If you truly want to get in to this hobbie Start by finding a "Hero" you like and then start with that one, but be prepared to spend some money with bags, boards, and boxes.
and the 5th type the old school collector like me. People like me do not like the newer comics the older the better story and art to us. We also do not like CCG Slabbed type comics. If a comic has lasted 20+ Years and is a 9.0+ It can keep staying that way without a hardshell that can not be opened and closed back up without alot of trouble. People like us like to read and enjoy our comics and dont look at it as an investment but a hobby like it should be and was ment to be.
I think the CGC industry has killed the way of collecting, making poor copies like Action #1 or Superman #1 getting to over 10,000 and up for a comic think about it even 1 million for a comic is crazy!! I understand the value but common a million and over for a comic book wow....
where can i go to see the actual value of my comic books? ive about eighty.... alot from the 50s and 60s... i just want to sell them.. but thses shitty pawn shops around here say a dollar a peace... ive looked a few up and they worth 30 -50 bucks??
@JASONROCK1983 i thnk ppl who work at pawnshops try to buy it for less thn its actually worth thn sell thm for a higher price for wat they bought thm 4 just go to a regurlar comicbook shop and they will probably give u a fair price
I'm a collector! I love the stories and the idea of collections. I'll actually buy the individual issues and then later trade paperbacks which I will most likely read rather than the individual. Or sometimes I buy two, one for "collection" and the other for "use".
I'm a reader.
