  • 8 people are Bush relatives...keep going Eddie!

  • I love eddie so much im gonna explode

  • heres someone with real talent unlike all the music these days :(

  • @silvi01997 Nope, no politician is safe from Eddie Vedder. He was a vocal critic of US foreign policy under Clinton AND Bush, and if memory serves me right, he was not a fan of John Kerry.

  • this should be sang 28th in this month, for Alan García here in Perú. Find yourself another country to rip apart

  • Where can I find the video where he calls Barry Soetoro out with a Phil Ochs song?! Or is lunatic spending and warmongering good with a (D) after it?!

  • Had to be done.

  • The best thing about Eddie is his love of Phil Ochs. I hope he likes his non-politic or less politic stuff cause Phil could fucking write a melody with lyrics much better than this song.

  • tihs is a tribute to phil ochs song 'here's to the state of richard nixon'

  • @ambrosiaClong And "Here's to the state of Mississippi," the original song.

  • While the bombs they fall on children dont know which side...dont care which side that they're on ...Wow, thats make me think. nic vid, i love the song.

  • Just to reiterate, and to give the genius his proper due, this is a song by Phil Ochs, originally titled: Here's to the State of Mississippi", written in the early 1960's.

  • ugh simply amazing song...... and yeah I'm mad that my dad's a vet who spends 4/5 of his income on perscriptions.... nothings too good for a veteran so nothing is what they will get in this new american way...

  • the churches of who? he normally sings jerry falwell, but this time he sings another name

  • "Drilling for fear makes the job simple. Born on third, thinks he got a triple"

  • @guitarbutt

    what about godzilla

  • Great rendition by Vedder... what a universal voice... tears to my eyes, a great, great Phil ochs song.

  • what album is this song on?

  • A fine adaptation of a great Phil Ochs song. I certainly don't think bush and dick were clowns, however. They are both murderous criminals that deserve a very long time in the Big House, hopefully with Bin Ladin and a few other scumbags to join them.

  • where there is smoke there is fire killa

  • LOL @ the McVeigh refrence. dont you know he was the excuse for people in your own government to bomb that building to convince people to pass anti terror legislation.

Arvydas sucks off the teet of his precious government overlords... kinda like a tick

  • oh great.....a conspiracy theorist douchebag....just like McVeigh

  • @arvydas0069 <----- LOOKS LIKE WE'VE GOT A REPUBLICAN IN THE HOUSE...

  • <---3 years in Iraq....8 years overall serving the American public....and of course I'm not a Democrat....how the hell could I be? Give my tax money to lazy people to squander away? Turning America deeper into a welfare state with each passing generation? Fucking nuts if you think I could be anything else

  • @arvydas0069 - What you are looking for is payoff for your service in the military.. The pay off is this; a country is made up of people both rich and poor, you obviously havn't read your Declaration of Independence which states "give me your por etc." The truly great nations in history looked after their poor and disenfranchised. When you use a term like "lazy people" you are are talking about a tiny minority who will always be lazy. Don't ignore the many that need your help.

  • @Georgie2047 It's not my job to help the poor. It's my job to help those that can't help themselves.

  • @arvydas0069 - Poverty has a way of making people helpless and in need of your help.

  • @arvydas0069 The Iraq War has been calculated to have cost $3 trillion in direct and indirect costs. BEFORE Obama took office. Now that's squandering money.

  • the 2nd amendment is my anti-terrorist legislation

  • Ok McVeigh....you can sit o your ass in your barn collecting your pop guns while we take care of the real terrorists. Isolationism has been proven time and time again to be a lethal position to take on the part of the USA. We saw it after 8 yrs of Clinton's downsizing of the military and putting on hold many important programs and inaction on actionable intelligence. Fuck, we had 8 terrorist attacks during his term that went unpunished not to mention being embarrassed in Somalia.

  • u can call me an isolationist if you want but youre a retard and incorrect. i guess killing innocent people takes all your humanity away

  • Muslims or Christians, they are both terrorist religions (Any of you self righteous Christians remember the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition???) This is a Phil ,Ochs song and I like Eddie arranging it for more contemporary issues!!

  • Comment removed

  • Ignorance is bliss. You must be bliss.

  • the crusades and the inquisition was not carried out by Christians

  • Bury Bush alive - thats what he deserves. Fuck you pricks that support him. Vedder is the greatest. Arvydas0069 - Id love to swap your legs with the poor kid in the wheelchair. You fuckwit.

  • Hey ass crack...

I fought in the Iraq in the Marines in the infantry and lost many friends and one very close friend I grew up with...I myself had numerous scrapes with death and I'll put my foreign policy experience against anyone you know, "fuckwit" You are just a troll motherfucker that has no clue, representative of our whole generation. You owe the Military your fucking existence, it has always been that way. Nothing has changed. Vedder is just a man...nothing great or worthy of respect

  • Yes, a strong military is the ONLY reason we were even able to acheive economic dominance.

What the hell is the economy and healthcare when you have bombs dropping your backyard?

If defense of this country was left up to the "left" we would already be speaking another language.

  • @arvydas0069 - you think going to iraq (which i think your lying) gives you foreign policy experience? Give me a break. You are just told what to do the whole time. I was in the military and just like you I CHOSE to go in. I don't have the right to fucking tell people they shouldn't be here if it wasn't for me. You sir are an ignorant fool and need to learn some humility.

  • Kinda nice to know, that there are some people out there that might be able to lift up the legacy when Dylan & Co. are no longer here

  • I´m not guy but, I love this man...

  • Do you people seriously care what Eddie Vedder thinks about politics? He is just a washed up want to be hippie surf bum turned musician who hasn't produced a single note of decent music since 1994. Really? who cares what musicians and actors think about anything they live in their own little superficial world. NO RESPECT for them at all......

  • well, i certainly don't care whaat eddie vedder thinks of politics. But i care even less about what a shallow person, that's you, who discards art, probably the only deep thing left in the world, since reason and thought is something extinct.

BTW check out "into the wild" soundtrack and then shut the fuck up

  • Dood I spent years listening to these guys and i wasted two years of my life running around withe the likes of Phish and others. all I am saying is who gives a flying fuck what he and the rest of the music industry and all of hollywood has to say about politics. Get BENT Asshole

  • well i agree, anyway at least he's not Bono, but as i don't judge music on its political of philosophical content i'll keep listening to him. apologies

  • 'Washed up hippie' perhaps. But that doesn't change the fact that under the letter of the law, each of the mentioned parties are guilty of numerous crimes of misuse of power and human rights violations (as defined in both the Constitution and the Geneva Convention).

And as for the 1994 comment, "Do the Evolution" "Gone" "I am Mine" "Hail, Hail". He's still writing it.

  • I concur ,but i still doesn't change my opinion that people like Vedder, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and many others like them should simply keep their political beliefs to themselves. When I go to a concert I want to hear music not political rantings. When I see Sean Penn on tv or the movies just act an drop the schmoozing with third world dictators.

  • @ingallsadventurer Whats wrong with listening to the political beliefs if they had something to do with the creation of the music? After the 'Pearl Jam' album a few years ago for instance Eddie would talk about Damien Echols and the rest of the West Memphis Three, during or around the song Army Reserve, mainly due to Echols cowriting the song. Music and politics have gone hand in hand for decades, and its only right that they should express it. After all, without politics, no Woodstock.

  • I agree in terms of national defense. I don't remember NK and especially Iran being so aggressive when Bush was around. The second Bush left Iran became more aggressive both in uranium enrichment and shows of force such as War Games, which are going on as we speak in Iran aimed at training to protect their nuclear interests.

Too bad people our age are a bunch of politically-ignorant sheep.

  • we are fucked as a generation

  • Yeah Bush's policy to send troops of the US and other coutries to Iraq was a doozy. Speak for yourself on the generation too. I feel for your friends, if thats true, but if you love Bush so much, go back and dig some more oil.

  • I am part of the Sheep/completely politically retarded generation, so I feel confident in my interpretation of it.

Obama is as much a dumbass as Bush was, if not more so. The errors made my Obama and Friends have been so glaring is defies belief.

"Bush Derangement Syndrome" seems to affect everyone on the political left, even Barry Soetoro.

  • he became president because he is like Bush on steroids not because he is different. if the people wanted real change they should have voted for alan keyes or ron paul

  • don't be a douche...i work in iraq and i'm in baghdad now...there's no stealing of oil...and trust me, you will be bitching when gas is 600.00 a month just for your work commute

  • yeah that's right there's no stealing, just thousands of lives lost for a "non-hostile" acquisition of resources... Think about it. And you support Bush on policy. Don't know how you could if your mates died there.

  • seems to me since they own the oil we ought to figure out how to get along instead of how to blow shit up

  • @wauft I think we should just stop buying their oil all together, start drilling here, and intensely pursue greener, cheaper, and more efficient ways of personal transportation to both lessen our consumption/need and wean ourselves off oil. Oh yeah, and it will help bankrupt those countries over there.

  • Ive been here since 2005 and I haven't seen anyone "blow shit up" except religious extremists

  • oh so the troops are religious extreamists now?

  • hahahah - the taxpayers dollars are being well spent on their troops - with cocks like you spending their time overseas on youtube. Keep fighting the good fight dickhead.

  • wow....asscrack....you are a mental midget of the highest order...everything you write sounds like it came out of the mouth of a 7 year old

  • so troops are insurgents? you dont make much sense meathead. have u been there killing innocent people who never attacked our country?

  • Are you and asscrack that stupid to argue with me? You are the prototypical pieces of shit that made the term "liberal" a bad word. You made baseless and unfounded accusations, you are comparing our Military to insurgents and murderers, and your intellect and common sense is lower than a boot Private. You think you have some higher education than the military? Let me assure you, everything I've seen you type on here should be embarrassing to yourself and your family if it were to be read aloud

  • now all youre doing is projection your faults on me! YOU used the term liberal not me, YOU compared the US military to insurgents not me. actually all the deragatory things you said about me apply to you. you may as well stop talking now lest you prove your ignorance even more

  • if you go to the middle east lets be straight, you dont fight to protect me but to satisfy your own bloodlust

  • LOL Blood lust? What blood lust...where is this fighting going on? Looks like a bunch of brainwashed 3rd world Muslim fucks blowing themselves up in Souqs and killed hundreds of innocent people....that's their MO

  • @arvydas0069 OH NO I accidentaly thumbed you up. WE financed it. Bothsides. Do some reading other evidence!!!

  • now Obama is following right in his footsteps

  • Dude, I love the concept of what Eddie is trying to capture here, but the end result just really sucks. I've heard it before and thought the same thing, but I decided to give it another try tonight, there's no just getting around the fact that it sucks. Perhaps my standards are too high. Leave it to Phil Ochs, regardless.

  • Eddie votes in favor of the Independant party [Ralph Nader]

  • Eddie is lovely~

  • did someone seriously ask if he was a dem or a repub??? wow....

  • Eddie Vedder is the real deal, a genuine person who honestly cares in a time of so much superficiality and apathy

  • @PixiesFanatic ...and a heart of gold and a pure soul !!!!!!

  • is eddie a democrat or republican?

  • i think democrat, but i might be wrong

  • The Original of the Phil Ochs song is "State of Mississippi" which Phil Ochs then did as "State of Richard Nixon"

  • i dont know what country they should be part of. i mean, you know? i dont believe deporting people does a whole lot of good

  • Fuck you Bush

  • It sounds a bit like " the times they are a-changin'" :)

  • lol I WONDER WHY

  • The song is actually re-written lyrics to

"Here's to the state of mississipi" which is by Phill Ochs a folk writer from the same time as Bob Dylan.

  • it does. but it's actually a modified version of the amazing phil och's song about richard nixion, which was a re-write to his song about mississippi, but eddie does make it sound like "the times they are a-changin". nobody can do it quite like phil though.

i hate how history repeats itself like this :(

  • Service in Iraq is NO badge of honoUr.

  • Fucking flashes

  • So was Thomas Paine.

  • Jesus was a liberal. So was Thomas Jefferson.

  • It's painfully ironic that you would say "PLEASE READ A BOOK and don't pretend like you know what you are talking about" right after you say something idiotic like "Thomas Jefferson was libertarian". YOU, sir, and those like YOU, are the reason your country is "being ruined." It's not like the rest of the world has had any hope for your terrible nation for the past few decades, anyway though. Certainly not my nation.

  • "Also, American power is the best thing that has ever happened to the world."

Yeah, tell that to anyone in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and even many places here in europe.

    And pray you live.

"That is of course unless you would Russia or China to enjoy sole superpower status, which is the alternative."

No nation should ever be a "superpower". Unity among allied nations. International co-operation. This is the only viable alternative, if we want to maintain our planet.

  • "Jefferson was extremely lib."

That's why he supported an expanded inheritance law and estate tax in order to democratically check the overgrowth of wealth, right? And what of his bills in virginia mandating free education for the destitute funded by taxpayers? Or his public library?

"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people."

"Experience demands that man is the only animal which devours his own kind, for I can apply no milder term to the general prey of the rich on the poor."

  • "I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another."

"Lay down true principles and adhere to them inflexibly. Do not

be frightened into their surrender by the alarms of the timid, or

the croakings of wealth against the ascendency of the people."

Some "libertarian." He was just as much of a(n) (american) liberal as FDR. Just in a different time and place.

  • "Wrote my undergrad thesis on him, you're barking up the wrong tree."

Ah, yes. That's that world renowned and absolutely brilliant american education system at work. So I wouldn't doubt it, but that only damages your credibility. LOL, "barking up the wrong tree". Except, you are more of a sapling, so my "barking" is of little consequence when a slight breeze could take care of you.

  • ur a moron

  • It's great to hear Vedder knows and appreciates the works of the legendary Phil Ochs! Rock On! bc

  • Phil Ochs is one of the three greatest protest writers of all-time, and one of my all-time favorites, and it is great to see someone as authentic as Eddie Vedder update Here's to the State of Mississippi/Here's to the State of Richard Nixon.

  • so they can be free, and so can you.

Actually, you have it the wrong way around.

government is a social contract - you give to get something in return. Liberal prefers social benifit programs so that the largest good comes of the invested money. Conservatives prefer to give money to individuals (private enterprise).

Social Liberals -> greatest social benifit

COnservatives -> private benifit (aka institutionalised corruption)

  • well u must be making A LOT of money to pay that much tax

  • excuse me, that was an exaggeration, 35% of my incom egiven to smack addicts and oter degenerates

  • Well, maybe if you stopped having sex with dennis rodham you could slip down a tax bracket or two.

  • Later on, W! Hah!

  • Eddie knows, but no one realy listens. How many lives does it take? is it for the injustise or the oil ?

  • Bob Dylan knew.. Long time ago..

  • RESPECT ED

    LUV

    dB

    SNOG the band

  • I'm waiting for "Here's to the State of John McCain." Loads of material for that one.

  • nooo!! hopefully we won't even have an option to write that song!! VOTE FOR CHANGE!! peace

  • Here's to Liberalism

  • @labunner1 I'm thinking McCain was from Arizona? That would be truly hilarious now that OHB has give it over to drug traders and made it off limits to citizen of US! And OUR guys are protecting them. Seriously, it is definitely time for what you thought of. Yes LOADS and KILOS of material for that one.

  • Nice variation on Phil Ochs's old song "Here's to the State of Richard Nixon" (or Mississippi). Bit of a shame that not many people will know this.

I've always thought that Phil Ochs's songs are so relevant to today. Similar script, different cast.

  • Phil Ochs Rocks man! I'm glad you brought up this point! I had only just begun to listen to his music when I heard he committed suicide. So sad.

  • If you love the troops, you don't want them in the line of fire.

  • Then you go over there on your own dollar and quit waisting mine. If you like war so much i hope u get shot.

  • great solo performance, top notch, anyone forget that?

  • George W Find yourself another PLANET to be part of

  • hey all check out my videos and channel see what u thinks if it rocks or if it dinks

  • Well invading countries is pointless unless you colonize them. so everyones idiots

  • I am really looking forward to hearing Ed play this 3 blocks from the White House in a few weeks

  • I've met more soldiers; that say fuck the war and just want to come home.

  • flyhoc - what exactly do you mean by 'finish the fucking job'? Do you mean the job of fucking over a defenceless country? In my opinion the only job that needs finishing - just like in the Occupied territories - is that you get the fuck out.

  • as a 12 yr army vet and your comment is ignorant, being that no soldier understands what finishing the job is. Besides, Bush already said mission accomplished. Meanwhile Afghanistan has the Taliban and Al Qaeda stepping up the violence. Those responsible for 9/11 are growing in stregth while our economy and military are slowly tanking. A shame so many blind people in America claim to be patriots and America is the greatest, yet we fail our soldiers daily, nightly, and ever so wrongly.

  • You are complete idiot blinded by the mass medias propaganda... If you believe someones interest was to distinguish taliban and AQs activities, you are definitely blind

  • flyhoc you are one ignorant asshole

  • Please tell me he didn't call that an "original song!"

I'm very much in favor of adapting one of Phil Och's greatest songs, since it applies perfectly to our current administration... but I certainly hope Eddie Vedder didn't claim to write it!

  • That's the introducer's mistake. When Eddie played this song on the Pearl Jam Unplugged he talked about its origins and gave credit.

  • Here's to the State of Mississippi by Phil Ochs and a little later on Here's to the State of Richard Nixon by Phil Ochs. This guy does not sound half of what Ochs sounded like.

  • God bless all those stuck in the mess of this current Administration be it Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.

    And thank you Mr. Vedder.

  • God Bless America.

  • Yes yes yes. Thank you for posting. This is really quite moving. I am sharing with everyone I know.

  • Thanks Eddie... this is a masterpiece! - And, thank Apple iTunes store for not censoring this song in their store. For goodness sakes people, if go buy a song as a symbolic gesture of free speech, this is the one. Let Apple know how much you appreciate the fact that they need to maintain free access to politically sensitive songs regardless of national security concerns. What is democracy about? Also, thank you Google for defending democracy by allowing clips like this to be posted!!!

  • Thank you for uploading this. It's beautiful.

  • Such a great, great song. Thanks for capturing this performance.
