Indeed, Shuichi Murakami, and Kazumi Watanabe belong to the group of first-class jazz musicians. Kazumi, in some way, plays better than J. Scofield. Metheny and Kazumi are totally different, though, I think Metheny has more harmony and technique.
Shuichi was (is?) as good as Tonny Williams and Steve Gadd.
No kidding; I was just listening to Mobo Club and thinking the very same thing. He really should be a household name, and for my money 10 times more interesting than, say, Scofield.

We all know that jazz fusion musicians from across the globe kickass, but it seems like the jobs they find themselves in are in studio sessions with pop groups, etc. I wish it wasn't so, but it's been a reality for them, but at least they attain a steady following, right?
@naikanomtom ur right, I should have elaborated. I meant that the j-fusionists are like the oddities of music, "are they rock? are they jazz? what the hell am I listening to?" When I first listened to Jeff Beck, WR, and RTF I thought the latter, but my mind was blown away. I was upset though because it took my uncles who were "in the know" to get me into j-fusion. - hope that explained things (oh, and that also explains my screen-name!)

i've loved this stuff since CDs first came out in the mid 80's. came across a denon compilation that featured him. WHY DOESN'T HE RULE THE WORLD???
