I had a severely close call with a coyote as a farm kid and know what a mad coyote is capable of so I say if some idiot yuppie wannabe wants to go play cowgirl and wildlife savior then all the luck to her and hope she doesn't have to get too many stitches
I did not realize there was video blog with the book. I see every time I go to the bookstore and I keep debating with myself if I should buy it. Never have the money to spare though... College does that to people. Hahaha!
I just finished reading your book, and it was a fascinating story about how we can learn from and be enriched by both wild and domestic animals. There are coyotes in my area and last year Muttley and I saw a small one very close up. I tried to take a video but it was too dark, so I mostly have the audio of Muttley freaking out, while the coyote was unfazed.
hard to take the stripes off a tiger and the wild out of a coyote they may seem nice but turn on you one day down the road i would definetly not advise this had a friend who had a pet coon and one day it malled him not a good idea and yes a proper population of coyotes is great for the eco system but too many and they start bringing in disease or picking of new calves.
I just lead the book and so I had to seeif I could find any videos of Charlie and Eli. Even though the book was about raising Charlie, Eli was my favorite! Eli was the king!
I just read the book and so I had to see if I could find any videos of Charlie and Eli. Even though the book was about raising Charlie, Eli was my favorite! Eli was the king!
I read the book just finished and it's awesome. I would like to see the author now raise a mountain lion and write "the daily cougar" that would be so great!
@z978ady no, the cat would be fine. According to the book, Charlie sees Eli as part of his pack, and a dominant figure as well. He sees Eli as a member of his family and members of a pack do not eat each other. So, no, if there was no food. Charlie would go out and find his own food out in the wild, but Eli would be safe.
domestication takes a long time. the'll need to find coyotes who are relaxed, breed with more relaxed 'yotes. and then you domesticate it in 100+ years.
@OettingerCroat coyotes are usually only 25-30 lbs. they really arent all that big. i am also curious as to how a pet coyote would handle being picked up. it'd be cool to hold one in your arms :) they're probably really soft
I just finished reading The Daily Coyote, by Shreve Stockton. Excellent, very enjoyable book. I feel like I know Charlie and Eli and I'm so glad to now get to see them 'in action'!
I have/had also a coyote pet , his name is/was Silver, i fed him our left overs he would come by every night , i even actually touch it a few times, he was gentle, my dog Max did not like him too much but other then that it was great, i havent seen him and he has not come by to eat our left overs, in a few days now, he must of got hunted by hunters or maybe became road kill who knows.
wel la thign you should know what your doing and have a permit DONT get oen but if you do have a permit and know what to do DO NOt i cant stress this enough DO NOT let it know its not a dog treat it like you woudl a house dog just liek when my dad had a racoon it thougth it was a cat so did my opossoum
I think it'd be cool to have one, but I could never follow the stringent rules needed to take care of wild dogs (or even some breeds of large domesticated dogs)
Alex: Animals aren't like that..look at it this way, many of us own both cats and dogs and they get along, yet if they were wild running around they would avoid or even fight eachother. Animals are perfectly capable of befriending eachother, when theres no competition for food or other resources.
If you are desperate for a furry friend, PLEASE visit your local animal shelter and adopt a homeless dog and/or cat! Shreve did not domesticate a coyote because she thought it would be cool - she raised an orphaned pup, and did extensive research and had frightening (and dangerous) experiences in the process!
Might i say, that i wish i had a house like yourrs!! Your house rules, it looks so cozy. Secondly, Charlie must make a WONDERFUL pet. And i just thought of something; If coyotes are such a 'problem', and we can't 'kill enough of them' *shudder*, why not just make them legal pets?
the reason why coyotes are not considered good pets is because they are still a wild animal that has never been domesticated. they are like a dog, but they need a constant leadership and care all day, which most people can't do, because of work or school. she is able to provide that for her coyote, Charlie, and if you read her book about him she is able to provide that for him. Without that they would constantly be challenging you, which can be very dangerous and they could seriously hurt you.
Sorry, but your human too. You wanna start that, you tree huger. I don't have a problem with animals, but i do with snotty people like you. Your not any better. Think before i talk? First of all sweetie, i'm typing. I would never want an animal shot unless they become aggressive. Or tried to hurt someone.
Oh and in the town of Kentucky i was talking about they eat the goats and chickens. What would keep them away from small kids? If their wild they can hurt someone.
he's so beautiful!!!!!it's now nice to see charlie eating with the cat and kissing the cows!!!!!!! such beautiful creatures the coyotes are! it's good to see that they can be trained to be tame! coyotes get such a bad rep.......good video....give that bundle of fluff a kiss for me!!!!!!! lol
So do animals. Listen to wolves socializing. when my cat wants pets or treats she has a hight pitch meow. And when she wants to ba alone, it's a low deep growl.
Haha! I think that Charlie jumps more like a cat than a dog! Look at him jump up at the end. To me that looks like a cat's jumping posture. Love, love, love the video of Charlie. Can't wait to see more!
Shreve, Joni Mitchell wrote a song called Coyote...although it's about one of her ex-boyfriends, it's a beautiful song that could also be viewed as a tribute to the animal.

You are asking for trouble, they are wild animals and will always be wild animals. Start treating them like pets and you will have trouble. They are predators and will eventually succumb to the predatory urge and KILL. and thats not a kiss he's giving the calves he is sizing it up for food.
Well, generally you're right to say that wild animals don't make good pets. This lady is raising him under the supervision of experts, though, and she's raising him out in the wilderness and not in a human city so the risk is minimal. It's clear Charlie thinks of her and Eli the cat as his pack, and the fact is that most wild animals only feel the urge to KILL when they're not well-fed. I think they'll all be fine.
Thanks for your reponse but saying that predatory animals only feel the urge to kill when they are not well fed is misguided. I can show you pictures of coyote kills on my ranch where they kill more of my livestock than a hundred cyotes could eat. I have had lambs killed and not a single bite was eaten. Coyotes are pests to ranchers, trying to make them into something else is misleading an already misguided public.
The public are already misguided, branding these animals as pests and nothing more when coyotes are very important to the ecosystem and highly intelligent. If you're capable of knowing these animals' behaviors, give them a lot of attention while they are young, they are capable of being a companion animal - so says many people who have raised them solely for that purpose. They're definitely not for everyone, but to think of them as simply bloodthirsty beasts ready to attack is ludicrous.

At the end of the day "ipmofalaska" is right: Coyotes are DANGEROUS and anyone who's worked a farm will tell you that -- my grandad sure did, loud and often. They can be really vicious when they want to be and they're very dangerous to anything living in "their" territory. They aren't poor misunderstood victims, they're a deadly danger to anything that run them. I just don't see how Charlie's adding to that danger, since he has no pack and he doesn't run around lose. Seems like a win-win to me.
I work a farm and still do. The fact is any animal can be dangerous but coyotes in general are very shy animals but do what they can to survive. They are misunderstood when the likelyhood of a coyote ever attacking you is slim to none whereas stray dogs have caused numerous attacks and deaths in comparison to any wild animal. I'm not saying you should go out and buy one or go up to one in the wild, that would be foolish. But it's not all black and white either.
I share these pics with my parents all the time & my Mom just asked me if you were afraid he would eat Charlie someday....this put her worries to rest!
Such unlikely companions! It's like seeing the lion lay down with the lamb in action. You are so blessed Shreve, and Charlie and Eli are blessed to have you.
