Buying domain names and then selling them could be a profitable business. For example, the domain name business.com was sold for the $8 million in 1999. The most expensive domain in the world is Insure.com was sold for $16 million in 2009. But, of course it is kind of hard now to come up with easy to remember/short/available name for the domain that you can then sell, because there are already over 22 million .com registered names.
I think that what constitutes a good domain name for a website is 1) something that is short and easy to remember 2) something that identifies & promotes the product/service you are selling and 3) something plain (i.e. nothing fancy/acronyms)
To have a 'good' domain name you need it to directly relate to your company. An example would be to buy a domain with your company name. If it is too long then shorten it down but without it confusing users to another company or website. To goal to find a simple and easy to catch on domain name so users can identify your brand by remembrance and recognition.
It is interesting how choosing an appropriate domain name can sometimes require a lot of thought and pre-planning. It is actually pretty similar to when you come up with an actual name for your business. The simple tactics mentioned to help come up with a domain name (short, simple, unique) are very useful, but cannot be easily obtained. We tried creating a website for the DEM specialist once, but and all the appropriate acronyms were taken.
The dos and donts of choosing a domain name discussed in this video have been very insightful. I remember my younger niece once tried to go on the hotmail website and had actually ended up on a porn site because she had put hotmale.com accidently instead of hotmail.com Her mom was really upset and had a negative attitude towards the email hosting system ever since. It is important to think of the age factor when choosing a domain name and ensuring that people don’t easily fall into those traps.
I found this video very informative because I understand the importance of purchasing a domain name. I tried to register for my own domain name but opted for the free option from the site co.cc. Although it was quite simple to register the domain name the registrar isnt recognized as a TLD as a .com which made it difficult for others to get onto the site because they believed it was a .com site. This is why keeping it simple is the best solution for others to find your site.
An article in All Facebook talks about a misspelled version of facebook.com and how they can be used to scam people. Namely, facebok.com in September 2008 would direct users randomly to dating or electronics sites. The site uses CPAleads, advertising programs asking for action from users (i.e.fill out a survey ). Content providers get paid every time users do that, thus this is a very lucrative way to convert "large quantity of low-value leads" to "[p]aying consumers".

Examples such as the TNA one show that the sooner you register your business name, the more likely you are to get the exact domain name that matches your business name. This creates consistency for how a business is known to its consumers across all channels - be it online or in a brick-and-mortar location.
An year ago when I used to search for TNA on google, the first link that came up would be Total Non-Stop action which is a wrestling website. TNA's clothing used to only featured under Artizia ( another clothing store) since they had not bought a domain name and did not have a independent website for their consumers. However, recently when i google TNA, they have now purchased their own domain name that exactly matches their corporate name.
I was able to successfully obtain the twitter id, which my employer was very happy about. Now, Guardly is across the board consistent when it comes to matching their domain name with other social platforms. Tying our domain name with other social platforms aids in building our identity online.
Consistency is key when it comes to branding. An example of this that I personally involved in was at my internship. To access our website, a user can either go to Guard.ly or type in Guardly.com. When we needed a twitter account, guardly was taken, therefore we had to register GuardlyCorp on twitter. This was very inconsistent as we previously had not used Corp anywhere. I was very persistent and contacted twitter in regards to obtaining the Guardly twitter id. It took about two months, however
The most important thing to check is if company name and trademark is available to go along with your domain name. Having different names for everything would be very annoying for customers and cause a lot of problems in the future. Also another important point is to clearly set up your identity and use correct legal name with the registrar, this will help prevent domain name hacking. Consider other languages when making a domain name and avoid abbreviations.
I found a lot of your points very helpful. I think that making sure a corporate name is available is really important, even if you’re not thinking of incorporating a business at present. It leaves room for future growth, in the event that you decide to use your domain name for a future business. Also found the point about abbreviations interesting, especially since websites have global reach, you wouldn’t want to offend potential customers in another country - Nehme. K MGD415
Registering multiple domain names is a great way to protect your business/product name. Registering a .com version is simply not enough. You need to at least register .net and .biz. If you are an organization, register the .org as well. By registering multiple domains, you are branding your site and preventing others from copying it. If you don't register your domain names, your competition might register it and have it point to their Internet site.
Domain name is like a first impression of company for its customers. Choosing a domain name properly is very important. I remember I had read an article many years ago about a big company paying a huge amount of money buying the domain name. It is because a person has register this domain name which is equal to the company’s name and he keeps putting nasty information. It becomes a disaster to that company as many people reach that site even more than that company's site
I also agree with your theory on the 'lack of research' done by those buying domain names. I feel that if if individuals were to do research and then make a decision on what domain name to buy, their website will be successful because they have done the work to ensure its success. Through research individuals will see that not only having a short domain name, but something unique and that stands out will make your website more successful in comparison to competitors.
I never knew how important it is to register a domain name. Who knows, one day you can become famous and if your name is taken, you won't be able to build a website. Short, easy to spell and descriptive names are good to have as they are to the point and easy to remember. For instance, Facebook is easy to remember and people use it as part of their daily language. Registering slogans provides a company with a competitive advantage is an interesting fact.
I completely agree that it is important to have a short and easy to remember domain name. I personally wanted to create a domain name containing my first and last name but my last name is simply too difficult to pronounce or read. I instead decided to use "online" instead of my last name. Much quicker and easier to type out. With this domain name, I then try to connect it back to all my accounts such as YouTube and Twitter.
A very informative video. I did not recognize the importance of having your own domain name, with all the people out there it is surely possible that same names may co-exist. It is definitely better to purchase early on even if you don't use the domain until later. Also i did not know that abbreviation are not good to use as domain names. I always thought of them as an easy alternative to a domain name that you would like but has already been registered.
Unique domain names are very necessary, shorter domains are easier to remember and beyond that, a unique, short domain name could also make a really good brand. Google for example is a short word & because it's unique it has become synonymous w/ online searching. That 1 unique domain has taken over the world. Another unique domain name is Twitter. com, it's not even a word but it works, it's memorable & it's easy to spell.
I wouldnt want to go to 140characterstatusupdate. com
I think having a short and unique domain name is something that is necessary so that its easy to remember and easier to give others. I found Google to be unique in its own way in terms of its domain name. This was because today Google aint just used as a word but as a 'verb'. We end up saying, "Lets Google this information" which aint the case with Yahoo or msn. Google can be brand-able too. This is how Google for example was incredibly unique with its domain name.
Easy to spell is such an important factor in regards to domain names. There has been countless times where someone is trying to find a website and realizes that there spelling it wrong. This goes hand in hand with having a short domain name. The shorter the domain name the easier it is to remember and spell correctly.
I think a very good point in the video is that companies should buy the domain with their slogans like Nike did with 'Just Do It' years ago. I found it odd that Adidas never got the Brotherhood or any of the related domains when it has been their slogan for several years now.
The phone analogy was great since it shows the difference in regulations but with the new phone companies, some phone numbers cannot be transferred which is strange.
A definite concern in regards to independent domains is the over-dependance on social media sites. While a lot of organizations use social media websites as a point of access, an independent domain helps make a statement about your image; a name is a large part of that.
It's very important to ensure that you're able to align your domain name with any social media pages you have. It should be just as easy to find your facebook/twitter/myspace page as it is to find your website.
As you mentioned sometimes being short is not enough for a good domain name, it needs to be easy to remember and unique. If you Google yoga clothing you will see many domain names repeating yoga but Lululemon has come up with a domain name with no indication of yoga clothing, it is simple, and yet different. We tend to remember things that are different. Many customers will be able to just type in the address without spending any time to find out the actual website address.

Very interesting video. I never really thought about buying my own domain name and how it can help me maintain a web identity. This is another reason which shows how E-commerce is growing. Companies can really differentiate themselves in the E-commerce market by having a domain name that is easy to remember to advertise their websites. However, it is vital that you do it soon because many individuals and companies have capitalized on this marketing strategy.
I think these are great insight on domain name registration. It stresses the importance on the availability and naming conventions. With the increase registrations on company and individual domain names, it is important to register ones domain early in the game. This will increase the presence of the company, establish stickiness to their website and ensure the company reserves their domain name before someone else takes it.
Owning a domain name that stands the same as your company name gives consistency and recognition online for your customers and prospective consumers. It provides another channel to let your stakeholders spot and reach you easily. I know a company which has their business theory (2 words) as their registered domain name, instead of the company name. I had to ask their employee for the URL.
The advantages of owning a domain name can be due to identity, but also might branch of into providing an exceptional portfolio for employers, many people are not able to fit all their successes and projects onto a paper therefore the creation of a domain name allows the user to provide detailed information of their work through videos, interviews and such digital information.
As you mentioned in your video, Owning a domain name is becoming more and more important today because of the possibility of others in the world having your domain name but at the same time one reason why everyone should buy their own domain is because they are your identity on the web. Without them, your company cannot exist online. Therefore, you would not want to risk losing something so vital to someone else or miss out on an opportunity to differentiate yourself from others.
A company's website is a great way for customers to easily get more information on a product they are interested in. Therefore, having an easy to remember domain name is critical. Having an easy to remember domain name means that when you advertise your website through mediums where the consumer doesn't have a copy (tv, radio), the consumer has a higher chance of remembering where to go to get more information.
Incorporating a domain name that describes the nature of your business can help direct traffic towards your website too. For example, a well known video gaming website Gamespot, registered the domain name "videogames .c o m" So by doing this, simply typing "videogames .c o m" would direct users to the Gamespot website. Gamespot could therefore increase traffic to their site and attract new users based on those are simply searching for a video gaming website.
I think your thoughts on "lack of research" is VERY true with many individuals buying company domain names
Its not just the fact that you need to be smart when planning out your company domain but people lack the research skills involved, and therefore fail in the long run.
Quick example: If you Google, WEB DESIGN COMPANIES, you'll notice the same name being used over and over again.
No point calling your company MEDIA RELATIONS when everyone is using that; "be unique".
I disagree with the notion that you should purchase the domain and hosting from seperate providers. This maybe true for a 50 MB free hosting provided by the ISP but not for specific hostin providers:
a) Why deal with different companies, payment methods etc. Convenient to have it all in one place. Receipts, interface etc.
b) Its so easy to change hostin and doman services that 'changing rates' are not an issue.
in 2006, 2007 when there were a lot of domain name registrars "out there" many behaved unethically towards their clients - now a process of "natural selection" has caused the bad ones to go bankrupt and generally only the good ones are still around - but still, it is a defensive strategy if you are unsure how much traffic you'll have on the site and how your rates may change.
When setting up a business, ensure you match the corporate name with the domain name by doing a NUANS search for the corporate name and then a CIRA search for the domain to check if they are both available!
When creating a domain name, using abbreviations is not the way to go because sometimes those abbreviations have different meanings in different languages.
When buying your Domain name, DON'T be cheap ! you get what you pay for. Also Don't hook up your domain name with the same hosting service. If rates were to change you want to be flexible and not locked in.
Buying your domain name now is a great idea, since not too many people have caught on as of yet, over 6 billion people on this planet, odds are someone has the same name as you, Secondly buy another domain that matches your business name.

Quick example: If you Google, WEB DESIGN COMPANIES, you'll notice the same name being used over and over again.
No point calling your company MEDIA RELATIONS when everyone is using that; "be unique".

Use a simple and easy to remember domain name. Try to avoid abbreviations, make sure the corporate name is available to the domain name.

I disagree with the notion that you should purchase the domain and hosting from seperate providers. This maybe true for a 50 MB free hosting provided by the ISP but not for specific hostin providers:
a) Why deal with different companies, payment methods etc. Convenient to have it all in one place. Receipts, interface etc.
b) Its so easy to change hostin and doman services that 'changing rates' are not an issue.
c) Economies of scale.More=cheaper

in 2006, 2007 when there were a lot of domain name registrars "out there" many behaved unethically towards their clients - now a process of "natural selection" has caused the bad ones to go bankrupt and generally only the good ones are still around - but still, it is a defensive strategy if you are unsure how much traffic you'll have on the site and how your rates may change.

When buying your domain name you should make sure that the domain registrar you are using is a reputable company so you don't get ripped off

Its smart to buy the domain name of a product slogan, not only the name of the product. It helps avoid squatters.

Buying your domain name now is a great idea, since not too many people have caught on as of yet, over 6 billion people on this planet, odds are someone has the same name as you, Secondly buy another domain that matches your business name.
