This movie made me love chess game even more. I wish they did this movie nominated for Oscar back 2000, but that years was unpresidential movies come out that years, believe it was hard to pick.
There are only some movies with chess, but rarely the whole thing is about it. In a James Bond film ( From Russia With Love!?) is a fragment. This movie with John Turturro as Aleksandr Ivanovich 'Sascha' Luzhin and Emily Watson as Natalia Katkov in a star role is the best. Although the film has a sad ending it is a beautifully made whole. For example, consider the scene where Natalia, dressed in bright red dress, on a bench is reading a book while Aleksandr passes by in his worn down clothes.
Wow, a chess movie that I haven't even heard of - can't wait to see it! But I hate it when directors don't do their research, notice that the board is set up incorrectly in the first scene - white on right people! ;-)
@STANDERSEN It has become a cinematic "standard" to have the white square on the left, for reasons unknown to me. I agree with you; I've not found a reason for such a convention. Great movie, by the way!
Why did they take so old actress to play a woman Luzhin loves. She supposed to be 25 according to the book but she looks as old as her mother is. A lot of mistakes compared to the book, hate when they change the story.
Why does this movie look like it was made in the early 90's?

@GFXReal because 90's movies were the best ones.
