Computer hackers can do some things only in the movies :) People forget that. The rest of the time it's just trickery, and if you are careful they can't hurt you.
Very true. But, its also important not to leave your e-mail address on your profile. People can send some virus called key logger or something. It memorizes every key stroke you make. Anti-virus software can't detect it either. It could give people access to your bank account or other personal information depending on whether or not you fill out forms via the internet.
But still thats extremely rare and most youtube haters are harmless teenagers.
True, its a good idea to use the YouTube email facilities which are immume to that sort of thing since they can't carry attachments. And of course, never open attachments from a stranger in any event! :)
I agree with most of it, but I do think it depends on the situation. Most cyber harrassment is just that, but not all. And I do think there are things youtube can do, but their focus seems to be on features more than security.
I think my point, in a nutshell, is that normally someone who intends to do harm isn't going to post it on an international message board first. Also, the YouTube community is VERY spread out geographically which eliminates a lot of threats by itself.
We'll have to agree to disagree on the power that YT has over the situation; I see the strongest thing they can do as kicking someone off the service, which is no problem for a harrasser to get around.
Isn't that the truth though! "New virtual reality" is a good term for this. Our culture is currently in a place no other culture has gone before, and it's gonna have some rough edges.
EXACTLY! BINGO! Thats really hitting the nail on the head Cliff.
This is all really, relatively speaking, "UNCHARTED TERRITORY"
Some people are virtually afraid of "SAILING OFF THE EDGE OF THE FLAT EARTH" and thats understandable. All the VIRTUAL NEGATIVITY can be OVERWHELMING to anyone at any time.
But, thats whats cool about this video. Your just trying to give a little "PERSPECTIVE" on the whole "VIRTUAL THREAT" aspect of YT community life.
Seeing the harsh criticism directed towards users on social websites, makes me more sympathetic towards "Celebrities, Politicians", anyone in the public eye. They face a constant barrage of negativity, literally from all angles. At times it must be overwhelming, as seen recently by Heath ledgers(RIP) apparent suicide.
Especially in the UK, the tabloid press are ruthless in their character assassination, of anyone they take a particular disliking too.
That is so true, and explains why so many celebrities live a reclusive lifestyle.
But, as a sociologist, it amazes me the primitive way that people attack others on places like YT. It is as if social mores vanish and things are said that would never be said in outside society. I guess it turns some people into tabloid journalists :)
Great advice! It's water of a ducks back. If they can't hurt you physically, why should we allow them to affect us emotionally. Certain people live to argue, I wonder what causes them to behave that way.
I've heard several ideas on that. The strangest was that in a warped way they actually like us. In any event the negativity isn't something we should participate in...just block, delete and move forward :) Like the duck's back :)
My desk calendar yesterday had a quote from Anthropologist Ashley Montagu: "Human beings are the only creatures who are able to behave irrationally in the name of reason."
Great video, Cliff. Thanks for coming on and expressing these thoughts. I have a tendency to agree that it would take way too much effort on the part of these stalkers, etc. to follow through with just about anything.
Exactly. And when has this ever happened, save for the occasional movie on the Lifetime Network? Never. Stalking is a local occurance, and it is never preceeded by "Hey guess what? I'm gonna do so and so!"
I'm pretty sure that English or any other countries laws don't apply to YT, but the terms and conditions of YT do. However, in the English courts, it has been held that words or even silence alone can constitute an assualt.
The matter is that of the victims state of mind, rather than the statistical risk of violence within a short space of time.
But like you said, people should realise that there is no immediacy to the threat, so shouldn't worry.

Exactly! There should normally be no reason for YT to get involved with that tool at our disposal.

Thinking the same ... banning these accounts is not really helping in this case as they will register a new account.
Best advice is really about going to the police office ... the authorities are the only people who can help. YouTube can't help.
And we have to care about our privacy ... only if we're telling something then someone is knowing about.

Interesting video. I've been a YT member for a little over a year now.
I've seen / heard it all. I've been slandered, liabled, and threatened more times then I can count.
It's just what happens here on YOU-TUBE. It's the nature of the beast so to speak.
This is a "NEW VIRTUAL REALITY" People act wacky because they simply "CAN"

people have this ridiculous mob mentality. Get them all riled up and they'll do whatever they're told.

CliffBetweenTheLines 4 years ago
thanks Cliff....people seem to overreact for no reason...

I think overreact is the key word here...such as why do we need YT to ban someone when we can already block them?
