  • i first heard this song when i was 7 - i remember it as a very profound moment - since then the song has always been close by

  • This is OK, but the original is faaaar better. Adriano rules! *_*

  • Beautiful song and a huge hit in Australia. I loved it the first time I heard it when growing up in Townsville, Queensland. It took me years to get a CD version and now it's played often. It's a pity she only had one hit as she has a great voice.

  • This is a cover song. The original one is Celentano's "Il ragazzo della via Gluck" (The boy from Gluck Street).

  • Not a patch on the Joe Dolan

  • Way before Sting, Midnight Oil and Bruce Cockburn were singing about respecting the earth came this song. This is a lost classic! :-)

  • Good Celentano's cover. The original version is unbeatable.

  • Everytime I hear this song, It reminds me of my former boss who died from a massive heart attack.

  • Ah, so sad. It certainly brings back memories. How things have changed. Where is Verdelle now? I loved her singing.

  • It seems as if most of us here have similar emotions. It is, indeed, sad to go back to our childhood homes, and see that six-lane highways are now where beautiful meadows used to be.

  • You should say this song is a cover of Celentano's "Il ragazzo della via Gluck".

  • My meadow from when I was a kid is now a gated 55+ community, I guess I can move back now. Sob!!! :((

  • @TonyB08 Now that's ironic :)

  • @TonyB08 so sad

  • Such a lovely person and beautiful singer. I wish she could have gotten help for her stage fright.

This reminds me so much of the emotions I feel when going back to where I grew up. A lovely country home in Kentucky which is now industrialized to the point of not being recognizable.

  • Real great song. I always get tears in my eyes when i hear it. both this version and the swedish - Lyckliga gatan with Anna-Lena Löfgren

  • Just so beautiful, haunting .... appropriate for the 21st century? My 6 year old grandson said "my most important thing is the environment" ... he's 6!

  • Oh so true. I traveled to all of the great cities of the world covering four continents and it was all tar and cement.

  • Sometimes magic just happens ... no mystery, no tricks, no mirrors ... just magic.

  • Sometimes magic just happens ... no mystery, just magic.

  • A visionary song. It's all come true hasn't it? This was the version released in New Zealand.

  • A visionary song. It's all come true hasn't it?

  • Wow!!

    Tears in my eyes.

  • i love the extended lyrics.i think the best part is the background singers answering the lead.just a deep song.

  • how ironic,i now listen to this and remember when i felt the loss in her words in 1966.now i look for mychildhood and there's no trace of where i grew up.modern roads and buildings!

  • Yep..

  • A lovely song I haven't heard in a very long time...Verdelle has such a lovely voice!

  • Beautiful, an amazing song and singer

  • Simply stunning. Don't forget to smell the roses?

  • thanks for that, sad thing is my town is still there, the medows, the swimming hole, but I cant go back, I come from another place now. Still a beautifull song though

  • Beautiful.....Brings back my teen years....Thank You..

  • Verdelle Smith simply "nails" every phrase, pause, melancholy low, and soarling emotional high in Roadwarrior3's favorite English version of "TAR AND CEMENT." Roadwarrior3 would really love to see a Video Clip of V.S. "delivering" "TAR AND CEMENT"

  • Yes please. Anyone out there with a video clip of Verdelle performing this one?

  • @6Dreality I read somewhere that Verdelle had terrible stage freight and rarely performed live. Apparently, this really hurt her career as the studio wanted her doing as many concerts as possible. What a shame- she has such a wonderful voice. I wish she wasn't just a one hit wonder.

  • One of my very favourites from the 1960's. I had the 45 record but it disappeared many years ago so it is just lovely to hear it again. Thanks :)

  • Early this morning I drove through my old home town, thought of this song..ran home 2 find it on youtube. Feelin emo :(

  • This is a very emotionally stirring song. She gave it a really haunting feel.

  • Man! This song brings back such memories. Thanks for downloading it......

  • O wow thank you just beautifu...

  • a beautiful song with great meaning
