Beautiful song and a huge hit in Australia. I loved it the first time I heard it when growing up in Townsville, Queensland. It took me years to get a CD version and now it's played often. It's a pity she only had one hit as she has a great voice.
It seems as if most of us here have similar emotions. It is, indeed, sad to go back to our childhood homes, and see that six-lane highways are now where beautiful meadows used to be.
Such a lovely person and beautiful singer. I wish she could have gotten help for her stage fright.
This reminds me so much of the emotions I feel when going back to where I grew up. A lovely country home in Kentucky which is now industrialized to the point of not being recognizable.
Just so beautiful, haunting .... appropriate for the 21st century? My 6 year old grandson said "my most important thing is the environment" ... he's 6!
This song is truly prophetic and mystically transcendent. There is something in it that defies description but takes me to a very special place every time I hear it.
how ironic,i now listen to this and remember when i felt the loss in her words in 1966.now i look for mychildhood and there's no trace of where i grew up.modern roads and buildings!
thanks for that, sad thing is my town is still there, the medows, the swimming hole, but I cant go back, I come from another place now. Still a beautifull song though
Verdelle Smith simply "nails" every phrase, pause, melancholy low, and soarling emotional high in Roadwarrior3's favorite English version of "TAR AND CEMENT." Roadwarrior3 would really love to see a Video Clip of V.S. "delivering" "TAR AND CEMENT"
@6Dreality I read somewhere that Verdelle had terrible stage freight and rarely performed live. Apparently, this really hurt her career as the studio wanted her doing as many concerts as possible. What a shame- she has such a wonderful voice. I wish she wasn't just a one hit wonder.
i first heard this song when i was 7 - i remember it as a very profound moment - since then the song has always been close by

This is a cover song. The original one is Celentano's "Il ragazzo della via Gluck" (The boy from Gluck Street).

Way before Sting, Midnight Oil and Bruce Cockburn were singing about respecting the earth came this song. This is a lost classic! :-)

Good Celentano's cover. The original version is unbeatable.

Ah, so sad. It certainly brings back memories. How things have changed. Where is Verdelle now? I loved her singing.

You should say this song is a cover of Celentano's "Il ragazzo della via Gluck".

A visionary song. It's all come true hasn't it? This was the version released in New Zealand.

One of my very favourites from the 1960's. I had the 45 record but it disappeared many years ago so it is just lovely to hear it again. Thanks :)
