@aaronmackguitar I play electric guitar (and bass quite badly) but i can improvise guitar shit quite well......i guess he just dedicated hiself to bass every day of his life.
I get what you mean though, he's not human with some of that stuff he "improvised" lol
Flea is great. But I'm not buying that he can't read music at all and that everything he plays is spontaneous. He has the funk scale memorized. That one "complex" thing he played looked spontaneous, but that's it. You don't just improv like that out of nowhere. And if you know anything about Flea's slap-bass lines, they all are very similar. Doesn't take away the fact that he's awesome though.
@cestoiber117 me neither... hes been playing trumpet for years, and he played bass in school. he may not be handel, but the guy has a good deal of musical theory knowledge.
@cestoiber117 well improv doesn't neccesarily mean random notes that don't make sense, it just means out of the blue what you're feeling. All Flea's lines are similar because he might feel more relaxed in a certain tempo or key. He recently went to study theory, but I don't think he plans certain licks for jams, thats what improv is. But you're right Flea is awsome still.
i have a fleabass, which runs about $500, and i have played some musicman basses, and some schecters and higher end ibanez basses, and american fenders. And all of these are pretty much double the price of my bass, but i always find something i dont like with them, whether it be the neck, the sound, or just the feel. But i dont have these problems with my bass. Now im not saying that these are bad basses, by any means. im just stating my preference.
I'm pretty sure flea knows music theory, probably at least as well as anyone here. He's just trying to make a very very good point. Don't you all know "that guy" who's just better than everyone around him, but he's still modest about parts of his work?
It's interesting how Flea holds his thumb.... when you check out Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller (or any other great bass players) they hold it different. It's cool that Flea can still be this precise with this grip. True masterclass
he knows quite a bit of theory actually. he just doesn't know it XD everything that anyone does with music has connection to theory. he might say spontaneous jamming and i might say jamming in E, but we both do it maybe not the exact same way, but it goes through our minds the same way.
Don't normally look for this sort of stuff on youtube, but I like this video. A bit preachy in parts, but certainly makes me appreciate the bass a bit more.
of all the people in the world, they had to get this insufferable pretentious crackhead johnny-depp-wannabe to host this video. why didn't he go do his speedball and shut the fuck up and just let Flea talk?
@LittleGothick watch my mouth? how? take my fucking eyeballs out and turn them around? Why don't you go dig him up from his grave and suck his tiny dick, u stupid butthurt fangirl.
@ENMENDURANKI Yea i think i have that..the pattern thing...its really annoying..im tryin to groove with a drummer n the first thing i plays the same old thing..gotta over come that..even though in my head i got loads of other shit
@crohno No of course it's not. But many that learns theory acually get stuck into it and follows the rules very, very much without going outside the box. That, is not good, and I think that many people who learns theory get stuck in that pattern. Of course it doesen't have to happen to everybody.
@CornSw No of course it's not. But many that learns theory acually get stuck into it and follows the rules very, very much without going outside the box. That, is not good, and I think that many people who learns theory get stuck in that pattern. Of course it doesen't have to happen to everybody.
@ENMENDURANKI flea sure knows some rheory i bet.he plays so many fills in minor or mature pentatonic. he also plays mature and minor thirds on songs like charlie. he really knows basic stuff.
@LouBass09 ya but charlie was written about 12 years after this video is made. he might have learned a little theory in that time lol. he def knows something tho, any great musician knows some. Even if they don't know it, they just play something complex because it sounds good to them
@ENMENDURANKI i absolutely agree with you, which is why I'm studying jazz guitar myself. The more tools you have at your disposition, the more possibilities you have for creativity.
the interviewer looks Eric (from that 70s show) when Kitty and Red were lecturing him about being responsable and taking the Vista Cruiser and driving safely... only thing missing was the moving walls behind him XD tottaly weeded out
River Phoenix is the WORST interviewer they could have gotten for this. The guy knew absolutely NOTHING about bass. I mean, MY GOD! They could have pulled any bum off the street and they would have done a better job. River Phoenix was a no-talent, dumbass, drugged out, little pussy, who tried to act cool like Johnny Depp.
I agree. Not so much with him being a tool cause I didn't know him and don't know a lot about him but when people die suddenly it's like "Oh don't talk about them like you would have when they were alive! That's WRONG!!!"
lol u suck so bad dude who the fuk r u to judge flea hes ben on STAGE for years and he has played with the best. and who r u? nobody knows u ur nothing and nobody cares bout u or ur "music" so stop bein ridiculs
