  • theres a dick spray painted on the wall

  • I like his definition of "simple punk rock" good one Flea

  • what kind of a moron is the interviewer?

  • @VampiricNightMachine I believe he is river phoenix

  • Flea is just sittin there lovin it coz hes the rock star an he gets stuff for free and the interviewer just sits there and takes it

Flea is just a pure 110% legend

  • Haha penis in the corner next to amp 3:08

  • HEY-HEY-HEY-HEY!!! That was the best part! ;P

  • What's the name of the envelope filter he said Bootsy has?

  • I want that pedal! 5:48

  • 7:14!

  • i want to watch this whole series of clips, but that dude interviewing, something about him

  • @drjamyma hes doped up. river pheonix died of an overdose if im not mistaked

  • Best moment 1:35 (Y)

  • he has to know something about theory. there is no way you could just improvise all over the place without having a clue about what you are doing.

  • @aaronmackguitar I play electric guitar (and bass quite badly) but i can improvise guitar shit quite well......i guess he just dedicated hiself to bass every day of his life.

I get what you mean though, he's not human with some of that stuff he "improvised" lol

  • @ClaudioSanchezCC well if really know you're scales and modes, improvision will be like a relex.

  • @aaronmackguitar I disagree. He dedicated himself to playing and plays with what he feels is right. You don't necessarily need theory for it.

  • @ryedain Indeed. Frankly, theroy doesn't tell you what to do. Theory tells you what you are doing. :)

  • river: "well thats cool how..."

    flea: EPIC FILTER BASS

SHUT THE FUCK UP RIVER ITS FLEA TIME

  • The King of Funk!

  • LOL ... THAT HEY HEY HEY

    SCARED ME

  • lol their both stoned as fuck

  • who needs to break a board with a kick when you can slap bass into another dimension

  • Flea is great. But I'm not buying that he can't read music at all and that everything he plays is spontaneous. He has the funk scale memorized. That one "complex" thing he played looked spontaneous, but that's it. You don't just improv like that out of nowhere. And if you know anything about Flea's slap-bass lines, they all are very similar. Doesn't take away the fact that he's awesome though.

  • @cestoiber117 me neither... hes been playing trumpet for years, and he played bass in school. he may not be handel, but the guy has a good deal of musical theory knowledge.

  • @koolmaaan Exactly. Oh well. Flea will be Flea

  • @cestoiber117

    What's 'the Funk Scale'?

  • @cestoiber117 well improv doesn't neccesarily mean random notes that don't make sense, it just means out of the blue what you're feeling. All Flea's lines are similar because he might feel more relaxed in a certain tempo or key. He recently went to study theory, but I don't think he plans certain licks for jams, thats what improv is. But you're right Flea is awsome still.

  • I now feel really out of touch with music....Wow.

  • TABS ANYONE?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • 9.41 "HEY HEY HEY HEY!" Flea = motherfunker

  • Um...not for nothing, but they were BOTH very high during the taping

of this 'lesson'. Flea, gotta love 'em!

  • a spontaneous rumble of Fleadom.

  • A spspo

  • say what you want but this guy kicks some major ass.

  • 4:36 - That is the coolest fucking thing I have ever seen.

  • I'm not trying to offend him or anything, I love the guy but did he not go to school? he can't read or what?

  • is tht river phoenix

  • Geez . . dude is like a machine. (machine of funk that is)

  • two amazing people (Chad and Flea)

  • two amazing people

  • 4:43 awesome

    !!!!!!

  • Dick on the Wall.

    3:07

  • JACO FTW!!! XD YOU ARE AMAZING FLEA!!

  • "I like anything that has any soul"

  • chad smith is the reason im drumming today...flea is the reason im about to expand to a bass \m/

  • " people should tell me I suck"

    lol at flea.

  • I agree with him about the equipment.

i have a fleabass, which runs about $500, and i have played some musicman basses, and some schecters and higher end ibanez basses, and american fenders. And all of these are pretty much double the price of my bass, but i always find something i dont like with them, whether it be the neck, the sound, or just the feel. But i dont have these problems with my bass. Now im not saying that these are bad basses, by any means. im just stating my preference.

  • @xXNiTeBriGAdEXx agreed man. depends on the person behind the instrument.

  • Er yes, the title is 'lesson', but his fingers aremoving so fast i cant even work out what he's doing. But on the positive side he is AWESOME

  • slapa da biass

  • Paul Rudd should ask Flea to teach him how to slap the bass

  • thanks a lot man flea is a god of bass and my hero

  • what kind of guitar is that help pleaseeeee

  • @razvymad Music Man Sting ray 4 String

  • I'm pretty sure flea knows music theory, probably at least as well as anyone here. He's just trying to make a very very good point. Don't you all know "that guy" who's just better than everyone around him, but he's still modest about parts of his work?

  • wish i got a free musicman bass :)

  • is that river?

  • Can somebody tell me wich effect Flea uses at 4:37 ? =)

  • @616Amon - I believe it is an Envelope Filter

  • @616Amon

    envelope filter, i´m sure

  • the interviewer is kind of a dick

  • "the richer you get , they start giving you more things for free - isnt that weird?" .. indeed xD

  • so thats what happens if you press that thing

  • flea is just as funky as bootsy collins!

  • "because I'm a big pompous rockstar" xD

  • what kinda effect is that

  • @bolser619

Envelope Filter Synth ... He says after.

  • It's interesting how Flea holds his thumb.... when you check out Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller (or any other great bass players) they hold it different. It's cool that Flea can still be this precise with this grip. True masterclass

  • he knows quite a bit of theory actually. he just doesn't know it XD everything that anyone does with music has connection to theory. he might say spontaneous jamming and i might say jamming in E, but we both do it maybe not the exact same way, but it goes through our minds the same way.

  • The thing that makes flea so amazing is that he has brains and brawn in his playing, he doesnt just constantly play the same style.

  • great bassists are interviewed by weird dudes...

watch Chris Squier's interview and is the same thing xD

Damn in 2:00 I was like FUUUCK!!!

  • OMG!! the host is dead, i didnt know.... im sorry for my words..

  • "the thumg thing"...

  • the host is GAY!!

  • @moty156 the host is dead, its river phoenix, dont hate

  • I wish musicman would endorse me.

  • press f5 if you like flea

  • wat is the effect that he uses on 4:40? it sounds pretty sick!

  • @jeffhardyowns123

some kind of envelope filter. If u freeze the video at 5:49 you'll see it.

  • love the 4:36 solo

  • wow that's what you DO with effects, you give them their due.

play out a good riff, a FUNK riff on some cool effects....

  • hah Flea is one of the best bass player in the world today!!! very gifted and cool man-I love you Flea and all of your band(RHCP)

  • Don't normally look for this sort of stuff on youtube, but I like this video. A bit preachy in parts, but certainly makes me appreciate the bass a bit more.

  • of all the people in the world, they had to get this insufferable pretentious crackhead johnny-depp-wannabe to host this video. why didn't he go do his speedball and shut the fuck up and just let Flea talk?

  • its fleas good and late friend river pheonix you fucking ignorant dumb ass.

  • i know he is river phoenix, u numbnut.

  • OH MY GOD

watch your mouth, he's RIVER PHOENIX, STUPID

  • @LittleGothick watch my mouth? how? take my fucking eyeballs out and turn them around? Why don't you go dig him up from his grave and suck his tiny dick, u stupid butthurt fangirl.

  • what is that effect hes using at 4:50?

  • @Jd4eva626 its an envelope filter

  • @Jd4eva626 proly a mixture of effects. Autowa

  • Hey Flea!!!

    მაგარია ეს ოხერი!

  • уу какой клёвый парень

и такой бас мне очень нравится

    спасибо

  • Notice that he plays better when his strap is up higher . . .

  • thats what happens when you...press..on that.....thing

  • they are both high as fuck aren't they xD

  • I totally agree with Flea, but the one thing that sux about not knowing theory is that you sometimes get stuck in a pattern rut. I hate that.

  • AHHH you are so right! i love you!

  • @ENMENDURANKI depends on the person i guess, works for some. but not others.

  • @ENMENDURANKI Yea i think i have that..the pattern thing...its really annoying..im tryin to groove with a drummer n the first thing i plays the same old thing..gotta over come that..even though in my head i got loads of other shit

  • @ENMENDURANKI yeah that shit sucks, :/ hate it too. I've not had any lessons in theory at all,

  • @ENMENDURANKI I think the opposit, when you know theory you get stuck. Just a thought from me :)

  • @CornSw not true, understanding theory it's not by any meaning a disadvantage

  • @CornSw No of course it's not. But many that learns theory acually get stuck into it and follows the rules very, very much without going outside the box. That, is not good, and I think that many people who learns theory get stuck in that pattern. Of course it doesen't have to happen to everybody.

  • @ENMENDURANKI flea sure knows some rheory i bet.he plays so many fills in minor or mature pentatonic. he also plays mature and minor thirds on songs like charlie. he really knows basic stuff.

  • @LouBass09 ya but charlie was written about 12 years after this video is made. he might have learned a little theory in that time lol. he def knows something tho, any great musician knows some. Even if they don't know it, they just play something complex because it sounds good to them

  • @ENMENDURANKI i absolutely agree with you, which is why I'm studying jazz guitar myself. The more tools you have at your disposition, the more possibilities you have for creativity.

  • 7:52 he said fleadom instead of freedom XD

    nice

  • who the fuck is this fucker interviewing flea?

  • River Phoenix

  • his friend

  • LOL

  • dude why are you getting thumbs down for this! that would be awesome

  • the interviewer looks Eric (from that 70s show) when Kitty and Red were lecturing him about being responsable and taking the Vista Cruiser and driving safely... only thing missing was the moving walls behind him XD tottaly weeded out

  • i love his funk solo at about 5:00

    sounds so cool :D

  • fucking nice

  • those two fuckers are baked!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:05 sooo true!

  • if only jon was in on that jam itd be so sick.

  • River Phoenix is the WORST interviewer they could have gotten for this. The guy knew absolutely NOTHING about bass. I mean, MY GOD! They could have pulled any bum off the street and they would have done a better job. River Phoenix was a no-talent, dumbass, drugged out, little pussy, who tried to act cool like Johnny Depp.

  • i have to agree with you, it was sad when river phoenix died cause it affected a lot of people but he was still a huge tool

  • I agree. Not so much with him being a tool cause I didn't know him and don't know a lot about him but when people die suddenly it's like "Oh don't talk about them like you would have when they were alive! That's WRONG!!!"

  • Yes it is River, who sadly OD'd later that year.

  • is that river phoenix??

  • when he does his funk thing it looks like the video is fast forwarding. dammmnnn

  • what kind of music man bass is that exactly?

  • punk-rock-funk-hard rock-grunge-metal-hiphop

  • Looks to be a single Humbucker stingray 4. The 4 knobs whould probably be the 3EQ + volume

  • looks a bit like a stingray

  • It is a stingray. It's a bit modded, but it is a stingray nonetheless.

  • wow ,

i dont know wich pedal he use.

who can say to me wich is?

  • The envelope filter he uses is a DOD Envelope Filter

  • 4:37 now thats FuNkIN FuNkIe!

  • Comment removed

  • Flea is the bass god

  • I've seen RHCP 3 times (London,Manchester,Glasgow) fucking immense...flea is my favourite musician of all time he is just amazing.

  • CHAD!!!

  • WTF?

  • Dude it's Flea, man... it's understood.

  • No dude, that's messed up

  • No U!!!!111!

  • @Kenny0339 LMAO

  • @Kenny0339 as do i

  • Мастер своего дела

  • they both got high after the interview

  • sometimes they look, like they've got high before and during the interview ^^

  • that's because they absolutely are, and were getting, high before and during (and after) the interview

  • flea is basically anyone who ever played bass' idol

  • agreed

  • lol u suck so bad dude who the fuk r u to judge flea hes ben on STAGE for years and he has played with the best. and who r u? nobody knows u ur nothing and nobody cares bout u or ur "music" so stop bein ridiculs

  • I agree. You could never reach fleas level musically. You could play the same thing, the exact same way and it wouldn't be half as good. Flea puts soul into his music. You obviously dont have any.

  • were you watching the video dude? seriously?

  • Flea + bass = ????

    nuff said

  • Let me get it straight.

Flea doesn't know anything about reading music, writing music, and theory and stuff?

    Wow, unbelievable, such a talent.

  • hey dude did u just hear wat he did? Wat does reading notes matter when you can make music as great as he can? read all the notes u want, he can still play the bass a shitload better than u could

  • under-rated music maker.

  • under-rated????? wtf he is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time

  • Fleas better than a lot of players, musically, and in groove. He's better than a lot, but he's not the best. People need to understand this. lol

  • LOL... yeah... like... totally... like... people need to understand that, because... like... what? ... Are YOU better than flea?

In other words. Shut the fuck up, you fucking ass clown.

Few human beings who play the bass guitar are better than Michael "Flea" Balzary... and even fewer have had a comparable influence on modern music.

    YOU need to understand THAT.

    LOL!

  • "He had his like, his secret special cosmic brain twirling around at unbelievable liquid pace through his whole body."

    Wow, thats crazy.

  • tyhe flea is

  • at 4:56 he has a filter on his amp or pedal. my line 6 has a filter setting. i use it all the time.

  • Flea is a huge inspiration..but did i get it right? Flea is like an analfabet on music theory? He just can't read partitures, write and stuff?

  • no.. that becouse he is an awesome person :)

  • it really seems like theyre both high

  • i agree

  • Can anyone tell me please what's the name of that Bootsy Collins song that Flea played at around 5th minute?! Flea = God ..... Bass God! :D

  • flea and chad are soooo their own thing. when i watch these vids i forget about anthony and john

  • great bassist
