People want to create a world in which those who do volunteer are not misused and lied to the way soldiers and the public have been for the last seven years. Many of the veterans that I know would take issue with the "superb job" comment you make. I have several students who have done two and three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and they have said they feel lied to and ill-treated by the political leadership that sent them there. They feel that the service they volunteered was abused. They are not spoon fed negative crap, they lived the reality of it. Since many veterans are critical, why do you take a criticism of the war personally, why the anger?

But, justhart23, I don't see that there is fundamentally a difference. I could even take the argument in the other direction: Even a draft is not sufficient to force someone to go into the military, as proven by the resisters who chose jail over fighting in Vietnam. The draft was persuasive enough to make most people go who didn't want to go, and poverty is sufficient to persuade an enormous number of people to do likewise. I think that 'economic conscription' is as coercive as the draft-night!
