I can also imagine a game like this for the NES in the vein of the Tales series if this were concieved back in the late 80's~early 90's. Easy enough for the cartridge to store, and simple enough for the system to process while keeping all the mad, mad cutscenes. You'd have to be hitting the start button pretty often to swap weapons and skills though... But this method did work for .Hack.
