I own all of Gibson's works. Have you seen his interview where he discusses the future of humanity as he rides around in the back of a limo? Which is only part of the one or two hour film... I haven't watched it in a while so I can't describe it all... but if you feel the cyberpunk in you... check out a band called VNV Nation.

BCI is brain/computer interface. EEG is electo encephelograph. FMRI is Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. As for the actual details of each technology, I suggest wikipedia; youtube doesn't allow nearly enough characters per comment to explain any of them.

Although direct wetwiring would have higher bandwidth, it's also both dangerous and invasive. Most BCI systems on the market these days are glorified EEG machines, and so are much safer (though still dangerous). We barely know how to process the data output of EEGs aside from determining brainwave states (though we can do more interesting things with FMRI, those machines are quite noisy), so direct jacking is a while off at least for complex stuff. The upside is you can train yourself for EEG.

2001 came out before neuromancer. But then again, so did Blade Runner -- which is often cited as being a good example of film inspired by neuromancer. In fact, gibson is quoted as saying that he rewrote a good portion of the book after seeing Blade Runner because he thought people would accuse him of plagarising it (Blade Runner has very little to do with the book it was based on, and is closer to neuromancer than to PKD's DADoES).
