  • 2:27 -2:35 Awesome!

  • Insuperabile!

  • Oh my God, that bassplayer is from another planet! Jesus!!

  • Man, that interplaying..

  • back in the days where talented people where the ones recognized.

  • Man, NHOP is just unbelievable. If someone snapped their fingers at 235 and told me a bass player could player could play Donna Lee at that tempo I would tell em to get lost.

  • This made my lady parts moist

  • Fuck yeah! This is a pure JOY to listen to. All aspects covered. Perfect. Paganini would have totally dug this!

  • NHOP's blisters would be lethal if he wasn't superhuman.

  • DAMN !!!

  • imagine this on guitar hero....

  • @unifreddy it's be impossible lol guitar hero is harder than real guitar, in my opinion

  • @mazeofmemories get out of here guitar hero isnt nothing like the guitar, (you dont have to learn notes, chord voicings, scales, arpeggios, be creative, how to comp, solo, learn tunes etc)

  • @unifreddy the really amazing thing is that on the same song we get the best guitar and the bass of all time but I think the is has edge.

  • 23 people have bad hand eye coordination

  • @unifreddy No. There the ones that were proven wrong, when saying playing fast has no soul.

  • someone press ''fast-forward'' button ?

  • I can appreciate the skill involved in this but I don't like it. I don't feel anything when listening to this. You people who like this, do you like it because you like the music or just because it's impressive? (Serious question, just interested. I know people have different music taste. :)

  • @ostfisk I think you'd like it more if you were already into the bebop genre in general. This is a particular extreme of a particular style. The thing is that there is incredibly thoughtful playing happening here, but if you don't know the song really well as a listener it's hard to follow exactly what he's doing. I personally find it truly enjoyable to listen to; I'm not just "wowed" by the skill they're demonstrating.

  • Joe Passalacqua, Mariano Passalacqua's son, from Sicily, Italy. Great! :)

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!!

  • @RaerY1959 04.05.1991.It was Solo-Concert.Before Joe came in to the little Club,a man said:'Joe Pass wish, please stop smoking Cigaretts or he don't want start to play. The folks stoped smoking.

After 10 min.Joe came in with his guitar and a big fat burning Cigar in his mouth. My distance to his playing fingers was ca. 2-3 meter. At the end of the concert Joe asked the folks in the audience, what do you want to hear?As times goes by ...etc. and he played all this Standards 45 min. longer.Fantastic

  • sheer wizardry displayed here.

  • UNTOUCHABLE!

  • i saw joe pass at the domicil live and solo.he played for 150 folks!

  • @RaerY1959 How long ago?

  • INCREDIBLE....!! playing fast is not the point as you see.... they can play fast..the mastery is to think fast..to make sense..not just going up and down the scale...these cats have it all.

  • @motreby Indeed...this is what we mortals aspire to!

  • unbelieveable talent

  • People who disliked this had no idea what they were hearing

  • Hey cats. Could you tell me if there is an album version of "Donna Lee" performed by JP & NHOP ?

  • Comment removed

  • @FunkySkunk90 The Oscar Peterson album "The Paris Concert" features another rendition of this classic. If you like this you ought to check out "Chops". A whole album with these two masters.

  • @krisp75 There is also the "North Sea Jazz" show with these two on OJC.

  • Best duet of the world!

  • Magistral !

  • Holy smokes!

  • BEASTLY!!HOLY SHIT!!

  • I give up. I've played a few arrangements by pass, but after watching this, I give up. And I blame NHOP.

  • my idol!

  • Jazz---Music of the Gods.

  • There is a God.

  • @FeedtheFrodos it's a killer song man! Gotta spend some serious time in the shed, one of my friends had it goin this fast. It's hard man. Ha, I am a trumpet player, we learned this thing together and he was just about outdoing me on the thing!

  • The genious of the guitar and the genious of the bass

  • when was this?

  • I saw these two -- with Oscar Peterson! -- in Dearborn, Michigan in 1979! I still haven't calmed down!

  • And god said to the young boy,"You shall have the power to blow to peoples minds".And he gave him an upright bass. And with a clap of thunder and a choir of angels, he began to play, and lo and behold, minds across the internet were blown.....

  • That bassist is part octopus...

  • i seriously can't handle this greatness

  • @uponaburningman- They are always playing in a single key, but there are scales that work for each chord, and there are modes that can be played over several chords in a row. This song doesn't even have a bridge- it only consists of a 16 bar "A" and a 16 bar "B" section, so the form is ABABAB....etc. The first 4 bars of each are almost identical, and then they differ slightly, but there are no "modulations" (key changes.

  • @HandMane- Actually, I think their fingers are faster than their brains. There is something called "muscle memory" that develops after years of doing something dexterous (like playing music) and I think that the hands players at this level actually are playing whole sequences of notes for each command from the brain. Just a theory.

  • wizardry.

  • @Uunster it is classified as "bebop jazz" due to the fast tempo, on the fly improvisation, which actually is more difficult then you would think. like @badbassjd had mentioned before with the use of all scales and modes, they are actually playing in whatever key the chord is at that time. there may be 2 chords per measure and they will play 2 different keys in that measure to emphasize chord changes. the central theme is to signify chord changes with the melody.

  • What genera would this be normally classified as??!! i know its a form of jazz, but what specifically??

  • It'll be Dream theater riff If Joe pass use distortion !

  • @gurupoom John Petrucci probably couldn't handle this tune.

  • good

  • What an absolute blessing to have these two geniuses on tape performing a jazz classic! If I believed in a god, i would have put him behind the camera :) Such a gift to us all, and a great present to all of us from these two brilliant musicians who have both passed on. Thanks guys, this version of 'Donna Lee' is still as brilliant as has ever been recorded :)

  • this is not human

  • wow wow !!

  • two masters. miss them :\

  • 2:31 that's one smooth cat

  • Still hot under the collar from reading some comments I would suggest NHOP doubters to listen to the old Danish folk song 'I skovens dybe stille ro' on Youtube, also recorded in 1973. Here is a lyrical solo that even some musically retarded people may understand if not enjoy - if not, I rest my case!

  • Sick as a parrot, old bass player me! This is unbelievable playing by two of the very best - why not just sit back and enjoy rather than bitching? 'Bebop' saw a technical instrumental developm. with Bird and Dizzy, but bass playing to this standard took much longer due to slower improvements of finger board, lowering of (new) strings and the new pickups etc. A violin maker in Cph is still selling NHOPs finger boards off the shelf. My idol in the 50s was Oscar Pettiford.

    Pewter11

  • joe pass..shreding...nice..

  • The MELODY of "Donna Lee" was written over the changes of "Indiana", a ubiquitous pop tune of that era. Music lovers had heard it so many times they were sick of it. (Mostly quarter notes.) Bird wrote a new, more interesting and challenging melody and called it "Donna Lee". Any bebop player knows it, not all can play it at tempo. You can also sing the words and melody of "Indiana" over every chorus of "Donna Lee". This might help you comprehend and appreciate bebop, if you don't already.

  • Ever since the dawn of history, ignorant people have dismissed what they don't understand, and bebop is certainly no exception. In its early days, many listeners had reactions like "That's not music" ! I just got this comment: "True jazz improvisation? My ass. That was the greatest problem of Bebop, it wasen't about explorations of the melody, but the machine-gunning of every suitable scale to quickly shifting chords... sucker." Similar to what my mom said about the Beatles in 1964.

Bebop is certainly not for everyone!

  • Django + Bebop= Joe Pass

  • so insane

  • ...ok...Ive now given up guitar for a month after watching this...

  • This is

  • I got carpal tunnel syndrome from watching the bassist

  • @pothound NHOP would never get CTS. He's completely relaxed, head to toe and uses his entire body to execute rather than just the small muscles of the fingers alone. His mechanics are perfect, a gifted "athlete" as well as the finest bassist in creation.

  • Joe Pass met his match with Niels Pedersen! musicianship seldom to be equalled!

  • It's like those fingers are on fast forward mode. Why can't I move mine like that...

  • Joe the Shredder. Give him a Strat and he could've given Yngwie a run for his money.

  • @wastrel09

    ...lol are you serious?

  • @wastrel09 So could NHOP....on his bass no less.I would like to see Yngwie try this. That would be interesting to watch.

  • @wastrel09 Are you kidding me? Don't ever put Yngwie infront of my eyes on a Joe Pass video ever again. NHOP can "shred" more than Yngwie on a mother luvin' acoustic bass. Yngwie can go be a fat useless scandinavian out of earshot of me please and thank you.

  • @wastrel09 i think the bassist alone would've given him the run for his money haha

  • @wastrel09 and without the scalloped frets and 8 gauge strings. ;-)

  • This is one of the greatest duos of all time! Joe Pass just seemed to have an unlimited amount of fantasy; incredible! He always manage to make music out of "accidents", and they will occure when a true improviser is at work. He always took chances in his playing and left a legacy for mannkind to enjoy, admire, study and draw inspiration from for eternity: Thank You Joe and Thank You NHØP!

  • 399,999th view.

  • Pedersen no es humano! definitivamente es de otro planeta...

  • 21 people listen to Beiber.

  • @imacanoli897 22 now xD Big looooosers ;)

  • The cutting back and forth to their is tripping me out

  • Ok well I have determined I don't like Jazz.

  • @jabberwock11 lol wut

  • Quel swing, quel thème!!! Ca fait parfois de revenir à ses premiers amours!

  • Even sound can't keep up with these guys!

  • Audio track cleaned up and re-synchronized (though not perfect) here : v=Q30bdy5b5-c

  • Aww wow.. Monsters..

  • freakin killin it! The bop cops...

  • freakin killin it! The bop cops.

  • Joe Pass, the best guitarrist

    Pedersen, the best Bassist

  • greatttttttt musicians

  • Joe's lines cause my brains to explode through my nose, that is how insanley awesome he is

  • Unbelieveable playing. And good thing I posted this comment so the amount of comments are no longer 666...

  • If Charlie Parker plays it on alto-it's genius. If someone plays it on guitar,it's "showboating" or "too many notes" or whatever-I will never understand that.

  • Octave pedal.....NOT!!

  • The Great Dane... oww...it hurts to watch..

  • Simply amazing! 20 people unimpressed or maybe depressed lol! I know I am after watching this.

  • Mo Vs Beard.

  • Gotta be one of the best versions of Donna Lee I've heard ! Love it!

  • Haha, great Joe!!!

  • Yeah that's madness by NHOP. For all of us who work to get the clicks up on our Donna Lee heads (NOT on string bass), this just doesn't seem fair. And don't even get me started on how great Joe is.

  • Phew!

  • There will NEVER be another bassist like him.... RIP

  • I can't believe Joe's comping and the lines of both of them! I'm insanely jealous! Gonna practice now!

  • OMFG TOO DAMN FAST!

  • Two musicians at the very top of their game. Talent that is completely off the scale and the fact that 99% of the population dosen't get it is just fine by me. My Dad (who played Jazz guitar all his life) took me to see JP at Blues Alley long ago. Probably my closest friend accompanied us and it was, and will be the finest night of my life. I'm so happy to have Youtube to relive that experience. Thanks Joe-RIP

  • god is not as good as NHOP on bass or any mortal either WHEW ;

  • A good musician knows when NOT to play!

You can see this so perfectly at those two godlike artists.

They give each other the space they need, though they have this incredible amount of technical ability.

    10 of 5 stars

  • whew, whew, dig, dig, dig! tires me watching it! I sure wish nhop's bass sounded more acoustic. but DAMN! he's diggin to the core!

  • As fine of Jazz players in the known world today.

  • NHOP is a god...

  • The 20 dislikes must be for Joe's shirt (which I happen to find quite good).

  • @shaunthonys LOVE the shirt and the guitar playing!!! the 20 dislikes are disconnected from their souls!

  • @kungfuaxe

The 20 dislikes confirm that approx. 2% of the population is deaf. LOL

  • NHOP has 7 fingers on one hand

  • and i thought the run NHOP does in nigerian marketplace was impressive....

  • OH MY GOD!!

  • I don't like the "jazzy" genre and if I let the music critic in me shine through I'd have to point out that the song is a bit repetitive with a absenteeism of variation, it's all a mass of semi-fast paced shredding in my ears. There is no real "climax", intensity or emotion. I'd sum it up as a fast emotionless mechanical clockwork improvising on an assortment of elaborate scales providing an uncomfortable stern feel.

I suppose everything is relative and not just in physics, but music too.

  • @MrBabablah listen to A Love Supreme or Kind Of Blue first... get to know them and then if you don't like jazz... fair enough, but i don't think you can generalise an entire genre based on this video and you're limited understanding of the music's theory...

  • @MrBabablah Well you said it, you don't like Jazz, you don't understand the language used. So why bother listen to it and replies that you don't understand their elaborate language ???

  • @clefdefa

I listened to it because someone on a different video described him as one of the best guitarists and I decided to investigate.

There really is no need to get offended and yes the knowledge I have of music theory is limited in scope, but I fail to see how expanding my understanding of it would suddenly change the musical flow or feel? Everyone comprehends music on a personal aesthetic level. music theory is only needed to interpret the technical side.

  • Somebody earlier seemed to think these guys were just running scales- WRONG! They are actually composing melodies as they solo, incorporating just about every scale and mode that exists. That is true jazz improvisation, and with a fluidity and sense of meter that makes it look (almost) easy! And the fact that they're doing this without a drummer (or click track) makes it even more impressive!

  • @badbassjd yes you are right! Their play is really not from this planet! ;) miracle music.

  • @badbassjd u funny

  • @badbassjd When it swings this hard, it's almost impossible to drop the beat. Even if you play nothing. Which is awesome :)

  • @badbassjd True jazz improvisation? My ass. That was the greatest problem of Bebop, it wasen't about explorations of the melody, but the machine-gunning of every suitable scale to quickly shifting chords... sucker.

  • @Syllerud

If you think everything that is mostly stepwise and played fast is 'machine-gunning scales' then you should dismiss a whole lot of classical music in similar fashion. They're certainly not playing scales in a linear fashion, or in order. They're only playing 'within' certain scales. Which is what most diatonic music *is*. Listen carefully. There are phrases, there is call & response. This is on-the-fly composition.

    Clearly, you've never played bebop.

  • @Syllerud - that's just like your opinion, man

  • @badbassjd Their brains are faster than their fingers!

  • Thi is the hardest song on guitar, ever; there's absolutely no one that can play it just as Joe Pass did (even though it may not look as spectacular as what NIHOP does, trust me it is.)

  • anyone have tabs for this?

  • @HBK1337 lol....

  • @HBK1337 lol!!

  • @HBK1337 lol... good one

  • @HBK1337 if you want tab for this,

that music is out of reach for you

  • @cutlass93 i know, it was just a joke.

  • @HBK1337 We all knew that! :) lol

  • @HBK1337 Yes.

  • Niels nebyl normální!!!

    NHOP wasn´t normal!!!

  • Octopusman

  • saikyo desuyo

  • fuck yeah!!!

  • that bassist is demented in a great way

  • I miss Joe.........

  • Beast

  • NHOP is a robot , its true , he was sent from the future , how else do you explain it ...

  • this makes me laugh! god these guys are too much.

  • joe pass=shigekuni yamamoto-genryusai. he makes the shredders look like little kids

  • ペデルセン先生、あなたは凄すぎます!

    もうホントこの人にとってウッド・ベースはギターやホーン感覚で自由自在に弾けちゃうモノなんだなと、同じ楽器演奏している者として orz...

  • Wow, that was good!!!

  • If you need to know what excellence is this is it

  • no one own better than the danish bassist niels henning ørsted pedersen

  • Anyone who thinks that these guys aren't "soulful" or "real" jazz cats need to really stop and listen INTENTLY starting from the very first note to the last. Each note is a perfect compliment to the note played before, and an even greater supplement to the note following right after. Melody is king the entireeeee time man it's insane. Don't think so? LISTEN AGAIN hahaha. Trust me man these lines will haunt. They're still out to get me xP

  • my metronome is TOO SLOW for this

  • my metronome is too slow for this

  • my metronome is too slow for this

  • Faster !! FASTEST AND FURIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • joe pass...joe pass...

it's quintessential guitar playing taken to it's logical extreme, but.......what's the point?

part of me is impressed, and part of me loathes the next wave of million note guitar players that this video will produce...ha

  • this is just so magical , god he really was something special

  • IT ' S AT jUAN LES PINS .FRANCE. 1981

  • This song melts my genitals.

  • Impressionante e fantastico. I grandi del jazz . Tecnica e gusto nel fraseggio abbinati insieme. Viva la grande improvvisazione jazz !!!!

  • 3:57 that insanely sounds awesome.

  • They can control lightning musically!!!

  • Jazz power !!!

  • =S =S =SS!!!
