I watched the Godfather in a film class i'm taking in college, however I missed how it led up to this scene. Why did they kill this man? Is the balding guy a really good spy in the Corleone family? Or was the driver a spy/failed to serve the family?
...Clemenza's overriding responsibility is to his family. He takes a moment out of his routine madness to remember that he had promised his wife that he would bring dessert home. His instruction to his partner in crime is an entire moral manifesto in six little words: 'Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.'---Sarah Vowell. I think I never really appreciated this scene until I read this,
@InnocenceExperience I saw a video of the best adlibs in movie history and this was... number three I think. It was beaten by A Clockwork Orange's Singing in the Rain and something else. It said that during this scene, there was no dialouge.
you know whats really strange ? @wolkenkratzermarvin Wasn't there something like that in the Sopranos also? But I think eggs replaced oranges. I never thought about that with the oranges. Makes sense now that I think about it.
@231thedream : yeah ? well i looked all The Sopranos episodes and in one scene i think carmella lets some eggs fall on the ground thats but thats the only time i see a scene with eggs ^^
@wolkenkratzermarvin i havent seen all the episodes, but the article I read made such a big deal about the eggs, i figured it was a big deal. guess not.
I liked the movie so much. But I think I don't get this line. someone please explain it to me. I already read few of the comments here but still not get it
I own this film on VHS and DVD and have seen it no less than 200x. But right now, 11 yrs after I first saw Godfather part I, this is the moment I have bit into my first cannoli and who else to celebrate this momentous occasion with other than Clemenza?
I have always wondered why Clemenza left his car there? They coulda killed Paulie any way they wanted to. Made him talk and tortured his ass, killed him in a painful way.
@PepperWhite62 in the book they describe how they wanted Paulie Gatto's body to be found as a warning to other would-be traitors in the Family. Normally they would have just made the body disappear but this was a special circumstance. Plus, it wasn't Clemenza's own car, it was Paulie's.
@PepperWhite62 According to the book (which I highly recomend) it was Paulie's car. They wanted the body found so that the Turk would know that his snitch had been found out... and to send a message to Five Families that, despite their recent misfortune, the Corleone Family hadn't gone soft or stupid.
Dudes.. There's a message in it.. Leave the gun, take the cannoli.. Cannoli is known as a sweet food.. It means here that move and and forget the sad past (leaving the gun).. Plus.. it's better to leave the (untraceable) gun.. than being caught red handed with it, in case some police or regular people see's them.
Clemenza is really torn up over the shooting of his protege', Paulie. He should've left a cannoli w/ Paulie as a Sicilian message: Paulie sleeps w/ da pastries.
The best part is when he shows Al Pacino how to "Shove in all your sausage and meatballs!" You'll never know when you'll have to cook for 20 guys sometime!
if they left the cannoli, the detectives bring it to the guinea bakery where it was purchased, and perhaps the police find out who picked up that particular package of pastry. Clemenza is too fucking perspicacious to go down like that.
@7mikethebike Your right, They would find the Bite marks and tell him that they were telling his wife that he ate some before her and the kids got to, and they will end up like Paulie.
@tally1219 Its not "celebrating" murder its just a memorable scene. The Godfather shows the life of mafia gangsters and murder was a big part of it. It was a rich life but it was full of danger and tragedy. I love this movie because of it's cinematic view on how tough it is to be a mobster, but I don't celebrate murder. As Don Vito said "Were not murderers despite of what this undertaker says"
@tally1219 It is a movie, and we don't glorify violence and celebrate murder. It is simply a famous part of the Godfather. And if we do celebrate and glorify violence and murder, then many directors, actor, producers, and even normal day people do. Great over 3/4 of the World population in mental hospitals.
@tally1219 oh mr sensitive over here, its a mob movie what do u expect? let me guess youre a bullshit liberal who thinks everyone can get along and the world is perfect right? wrong, live in reality. are u going to tell the wild lions in Africa that u dont like how they kill their prey too, maybe they should be nicer instead of biting down on a baby zebras neck to sufficate them? yeah i think u are one of those people. not saying violence is good but this is a movie and things like this do happn
You're twice right, because it's not the movie that glorifies violence, but the stupid gangster-wannabes that comment here. The whole saga is an epic unfolding of the consequences of one man's actions (Michael Corleone) when he turns his back on all that was good about him and chooses to embrace violence, revenge and a life of crime.
@Wallylex Exactly. Michael lost his first wife, his second one (divorce), his sons (distanced away by their mother), killed his brother, saw his daughter die before his eyes....he lost his real family & all what's precious to a man, and eventually died all alone...That was the concept that moved me about this movie.
@juventino8408 avevo intuito che era siciliano ma nel film non parla siciliano.. lo dice in italiano.. cazzone poi "speack".. è siciliano anche quello?
@ShinobiSosp12 Dont know, but it is a delicous sicilan treat. If have wip cream as i one time got, it not the reall thing. The filling is made with ricotia cheese. yum i want one know
@ShinobiSosp12 they're a pastry (the singular word is "cannolo") made with a sweet filling that uses ricotta cheese but it doesn't taste "cheesy", just rich. the traditional recipe uses citron and sometimes crumbled pistachios, but some people put in chocolate bits instead. the word means "little tube" or "little reed" in Italian. They're friggin awesome.
