As I remember, in the 40's or 50's, the toilets had water continuously flowing under them. They must have pumped it out of the lake, under the toilets, then back into the lake! Ewww! Maybe it went through the loveboat ride before it went through the toilets. Does anyone know about this?
My brother and I were at the auction sale at Crystal Beach. They couldn't even get $100.00 for the Giant Coaster. I think, in the end, it was torn down. I think I saw YouTube footage of the demolition. However, there are local people who own some of the Giant Coaster cars since I have seen them (along with the decorations from the top of the Magic Carpet) at the Crystal Beach "reunion" event in the summer.
Great video. Every summer in the 1950 - 70's we'd go to the Procter & Gamble picnic at Crystal Beach. (Like the park Hamilton companies like P&G and Westinghouse are gone too). Best was in the early days when we'd take a steam train that would let us off just up the road from the Park at Ridgeway. (Great clip of the 'Scrambler'.) First visit was always "Laff In the Dark" just inside the gates.
I remember that business with the Wild Mouse too! The cars would actually fly off the tracks! It was terrifying. I liked the glimpse of the Old Mill. That was Jungle Land by the time I came along. What a wonderful old film.
I remember that business with the Wild Mouse too! The cars would actually fly off the tracks! Also it was neat to get a glimpse of the Old Mill. That was Jungle Land by the time I came along. What a wonderful old film.
The whole frame of the Wild Mouse used to shudder and sway and the cars themselves would leave the track for a couple of seconds on those two short hills near the end. My favourite ride at Crystal Beach and it ended its years in pieces, rotting in the woods at the end of Matthews Road in Sherkston.
Like so many who grew up near Buffalo NY in the 50's - 60's, going to Crystal Beach was the big event of the Summer. We always went there at dusk, and at night, with all the lights it was incredible. The Magic Carpet all lit up was something, it made it even darker and scarier inside.... What great memories these videos bring back...thank you for taking the time to post these. They're wonderful.
jfxall We had a cottage in the 50's- 90's the park was a big part of my summers I can still hear all the sounds and all those smells from the sugar cones to the greasy smell of some of the rides.
I went to Crystal Beach every year as a child. I lived in St. Catharines Ont. I am 41 now. Man does that place bring back so many memories. I am beside myself right now. Thanks so much for the post. Very sad to see it all gone.
my childhood memories come flooding back..living in Buffalo in the 60's and early 70's was a great time for me..I looked forward all year to the trek to Canada to go to Crystal Beach..I loved the Magic carpet ride..(when it wasnt broken) and the Laff in the Dark..loved the Comet too.. where is Doc Brown? I want to go back in time!
@anglerfly Not really the reason - the Park struggled with bankruptcy for years before finally going under. I'm the oldest grandchild and I was 15 years old when the Park closed - nobody ever asked me if I wanted to run it.
Thanks for sharing. The memories came flooding back. My love as a kid was the Magic Carpet with the puffs of air lifting my skirt, the slanted floors, many distorting mirrors and magic carpet at the end.
I know! Back in 1968 I was 8 years old. My parents took me to this amusement park called The Pike. It was in Long Beach California. It was a great place! I remember the Cyclone Racer, Laff In The Dark, The Crazie Maize Mirror House and so many other rides. The Pike opened in 1905 and closed in 1979.
Thanks for posting. I've heard about the Comet and that it was at an amusement park but never knew what it was like. I also didn't know there was another coaster there as well. What happened to the Giant Coaster? Was it sold, or was it demolished?
The Comet is now at Six Flags Great Adventure in Lake George, NY. I went up and rode it like 8 times in a row last summer. The Giant coaster, unfortunately, was demolished.
I loved Crystal Beach - the Comet, the Yellow Coaster, Wild Mouse, Magic Carpet, and also the kiddie train - sweet!! Why did it have to close?

I'll take an old family-run park like this any day over the modern corporate-run warehouses they call theme parks.
