NO she is so wrong. You never put a napkin on the seat of ur chair. The wait staff should look at the fork to know whether the meal is complete. A person should leave the fork facing down on the plate to indicate that they are done eating. Face up if you are not finished. A napkin should never- EVER- touch the seat of a chair.

@davidlynn77 You are absolutely correct. The chair has one duty and that is for sitting. When leaving the table for a short period, a used napkin should be loosely folded, concealing any soiled area, and set next to the plate.

Yea, the chair advice is completely wrong for North American etiquette because it could get food on upholstery and make stains. Just put it on the table to your right to indicate you're using it again when you get back.
