I watched this to see the famous Mark Robins header that saved Ferguson's job.The fact that I then preceded to see a perfectly good goal for Forest disallowed in injury time to level is unbelievable.Even then they got preferential treatment. At this point if Hillsborough hadn't of happened & Dalglish had've stayed instead of Souness taking over and dismantling a side that had another 2 league titles left in it and would've coincided with the start of the Premier Lge then things would be different
In chapter 2, United have no choice but to sack Fergie, and with life in Division 2 beckoning, the club starts from square one. The expensive squad is largely dismantled and Graham Taylor is appointed before the FA give him the England job, so Bobby Robson persuades Graham Kelly to finally give that role to Clough, who has guided his Forest team to Cup glory at last. Ole Big Ead takes the job amidst huge expectation after Italia 90. Events spiral from there. Don't say it couldn't have happened!
I'm interested in writing an epic alternative modern history of English football, based on what could have happened had Forest won this game. The starting point is that United's woeful league form doesn't receive the recovery this win provided, and they end up relegated. (Before this match, they were only two points off the drop zone, and at the end of the season, they were only five clear.)
It's quite well documented now that Fergie would NOT have been sacked if United had lost this game. It's just an urban legend that he would have been.
If Fergie had been sacked, best case scenario for United would have been Bobby Robson agreeing to take over after the World Cup. Who else was a candidate to step in at that time?
@kisbie apparently Howard Kendell was a possibility if fergie had been sacked. would've also meant fergie would've gone to rangers cause souness left around this time.
@xSoccerxCorex Kendall would've been interesting. Another intriguing thought is that United may have got a hold of Graham Taylor before the FA did! Souness didn't leave Rangers for Liverpool until the following year (and I can't imagine him being offered the Old Trafford job!), so Fergie would have missed that one - he couldn't have afforded to wait for the 'right' offer. All hypothetical of course.
@xSoccerxCorex I'm largely interested though in finding out who was a popular candidate amongst United fans at the time. I can't think of a former club legend who had the pedigree, nor would a non-British boss - Sacchi was the hottest managerial property in the world at this time - have been considered by all but the most imaginative supporter.
At the time, most United fans wanted Fergie sacked. Of that, there is no doubt. I'm curious as to who were the popular choices to replace him. Maybe this season and beyond is why United - and other clubs - have always been cautious about letting the fans having a major say.
Nowadays, 20 years later, for a season like that, Fergie would have been sacked long before January... in 1990 they weren't the corporate giant they are today, and it was a different world in football back then... there wasn't the money or pressure involved, or as much a mass media....
@Kevinasp Maybe the press pressure wasn't so great but the fans were particularly vociferous. In the previous league game, most of Old Trafford were booing and calling for Fergie and the chariman to go. Few chairmen would have been as patient as Martin Edwards, who really doesn't deserve his hate figure status. It's not like he was a Maxwell.
Probably should have stood that Forest goal. Leighton was more than dodgy that season. Nice revenge for that McClair effort that was deemed to have not crossed the line at Old Trafford in the FA Cup a year before though.
Yeh for some reason never stood at the scoreboard end of United Road (I was 18 and impressionable and drunk most games lol) and stood in United Road near the Stretford end right on the goalline, And that goal was Completely over the line by an inch or two
Yeh for some reason never stood at the scoreboard end of United Road (I was 18 and impressionable and drunk most games lol) and stood in United Road near the Stretford end right on the goalline, And that goal was Completely over the line by an inch or two
Leighton was awful, I remember ironic cheers if his goal kicks reached the opponents half
Man U were not the corporate giant in January 1990 that they are now. In 1989-1990, there was not the amount of money involved in football. The newspaper was king back then, and there was not as much of a mass media as now. Top players weren't earning six-figure sums per week. If Fergie had been Man U manager in 2009-2010 and they had a season like that, he would have been sacked before January.
That linesman much have had a wager on utd that day firstly the ball had gone before martin layed it off and there was nothing wrong wih forests late goal, always remember trevor booking saying utd were a beaten team in the warmup
just imagine if lee martin has miscontrolled it and the ball had gone for a throw. no goal, no ferguson, no 10 league titles, no treble, no european double...
funny how life goes down to tiny little things like that!
The noise coming from the Stretford End was once measured to be louder than a jumbo jet taking off (stick your fucking Kop).
Teams used to fear coming to OT due to how intimidating it was, around the ground, and in it.
It's a shame that the atmosphere can't only be slightly replicated on occasions nowadays, but its what comes with success. There are ten's of thousands of decent United fans still out there, we sell out EVERY away game... we have the best away support in the country
Thats not at all true... Tickets are impossible to come by for locals to get hold of em. Try going to a game where United are away and see for yourself, thats all I can say.
1. FCUM were made because of the Glazers takeover, not because United fans are shit.
2. Please tell me what someone has to do, or be, to be labelled as a 'proper' United fan? As My family are United fans, my family are from Manchester, I am born and bred Stretford, I live in Salford (university), I've had a season ticket since 1991, 1978 if you count my dad, and even later for my grandad.
a proper united fan is someone who'll support them no matter what, through good times and bad, which 90% of united fans aint, theyre just in it for the glory of saying "wahay united won" but wen ppl say to me hahah forest r bottom do i give a shit?? no
Well you don't know me, so how can you say whether I'm a 'glory hunter'?
I've told you about how many games I go to... and If you must know, I would love nothing more than to beat liverpools records and be relegated, honest. It would get rid of all the cunts at OT and all the lads who struggle to get tickets, or can't afford (especially aways) can take their place.
Fact of the matter is were a successful club, we have fans all over the world, that is surely natural as were a massive club.
Dad was a Manc and made and found ways to make me hate the local London clubs. Rammed United's history and traditions down my throat and I just took it all in and i've always supported United. Had no choice really. Once you fall in love with a team at 5 its hard to go back. Unlike some in London, who chose to support Chelsea after they turn 10, when they make there own choice, and turn their backs on the team they were brought up to support because they werent doing so well.
Thats how many people decide on a team to support through family or friends influence so I cant blame you for that. But I wish people would give the town they were born in a chance. My uncle supports derby and tryed to get me in to them but I wanted to see forest and I saw forest play and derby afterwards and I preferd forest even though they got thrashed. I loved that day.
I begged for a Chelsea top and I begged to go to Stamford Bridge, but I was 5 and but I was brainwashed. This was around late nineties. Our family have proud Mancunian roots and that meant support a Mancunian, even if you were brought up in London. I never really liked Chelsea, but as a five year old everyone around me was Chelsea. But I knew who I loved and that was I United. No matter where life takes when I'm older, from Stretford to Sudan, I will make sure my kids support United.
I live in Glasgow and my family are all Rangers fans and i begged my dad to take me to parkhead to see celticVsforest in a uefa cup 2ng leg, so i could see my team Forest. My family still dont get it and cant understand why i would support Forest over Rangers. I was born a Forest fan lol and nothing can ever change that. Good Point today at Pool n fingers crossed Reading do us a turn on Monday :-) Hi to all other forest fans here
well am hoping you guys are gonna get a few goals against a poor defence. Pleased you won last time out though :-) looking forward to the match its gonna mean a lot to me! :-)
I attend every single game, the last one I missed was West Ham away in 05/06 as my Nan unfortunately died.
So as I said before... please tell me if you think that qualifies as as 'United fan'.
3. The home atmosphere is shite for all games other than Champions League, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea. This is because the club don't give a shit about the fans and split up the best supporters. We had a previous reputation for being the loudest set of supporters in the country.

very fortunate to get a free-kick for Leighton's flap at the end there. Should have gone to extra time.

i want to talk about the FACTS,
in football a game lasts 90 minutes FACT,
if there are stoppages the ref adds time on FACT, if you keep playing till the whistle (fat lady sings) you can still score FACT,
in football some decisions go for you and some against FACT,
it only takes 3 minutes to score 2 goals FACT,
the league is decided over 38 games FACT,
Manchester United are the greatest football team in the world FACT, Manchester United are THE ONLY TEAM to ever win the treble FACT.
