Ateneo made it all the way in 2002, back when nobody expected it, everybody thought its gonna be a La Salle UE finals coz they really sucked on the first part of the season. The moral of the story, NEVER GIVE UP. even if your back is against the wall.
The good thing is, THES dug deeper into the stats because it's so much higher than those submiitted by the other Philippine universities, and found out the rationale, or lack thereof, behind the inflated stats submitted by DLSU.

THES is already aware of DLSU's penchant for trying to "win at all costs" and submitting 'deceptive' statistics. DLSU tried it again this year by inflating their number of international students by classifying the Chinese/Chinoy students, who are still unofficially Filipino citizens but permanent residents of the Philippines, as "foreign students." Just in case makalusot.........
It looks like only Ateneo is moving in the right direction. As for DLSU not making it to the Top 500, that's really not surprising given it's a quasi-diploma mill. One can only fake the data so much, then, it becomes very obvious.
According to the recent (2007) thes-qs university ranking, only two universities from the philippines made it to the TOP 500 of the "best" in the world.

Proof of great the 2002 Ateneo team was? Most of the core players of that batch were able to land a job in the PBA. I'm talking of Villanueva, Alvarez, Chia, Gonzales, Fonacier and later on was Tenorio, Intal, Esclona, and Kramer. After these guys? Sinong susunod? 14 years ulet? Wag naman.
They can't recruit marquee players na sabay sabay. When Larry left, there was LA to rely on. When LA left, there was Chris Tiu. After Chris Tiu who's next? Jai Reyes? Parating isa or dalawang player yung naiiwan na magdadala ng team. Unlike nung 2002, the whole first five carries the team. Kaya malakas sila nun. Nung 2005 three players blossomed, okay na sana parang history reapeats itself nung 2002 but UST was just lucky.
The problem with Ateneo is they lived and they died with this championship. After 2002 and 2003, Ateneo had to wait for Intal, Kramer, and Escalona to blossom into certified UAAP superstars before they became serious title contenders. When LA was left after Wesley, Enrico, and Larry were gone, he was alone to carry the team. Just like this coming season, Ateneo (debatable though) will rely on Chris Tiu if he's still coming back.

yeah your right. We (DLSU) only have 11 championships. U guys really dominated the NCAA with around 14 championships. While Lasalle (still wasnt a university majority of its time in the ncaa) only won 5. But when lasalle and ateneo were both in the Uaap we began to dominate since then winning six and ADMU winning 3. I got this from wikipedia and its accurate enough. U guys should stop recruiting na from your juniors team. Just an observation (barrocoso, austria, not impressive).

I remember Game 3 of the 2002 Finals as if it were yesterday. Cortez was cold throughout the entire first half. Third quarter, he hit two straight threes, and Joel Banal decided to let Rich Alvarez, obviously taller and bigger, guard Cortez one-on-one. He never hit a field goal again. The gamble paid off, Quimpo hit a three to blow the game wide open, and we won the title after 14 years of frustration.

DLSU tried it again this year by inflating their number of international students by classifying the Chinese/Chinoy students, who are still unofficially Filipino citizens but permanent residents of the Philippines, as "foreign students." They can't recruit marquee players na sabay sabay. When Larry left, there was LA to rely on. When LA left, there was Chris Tiu. After Chris Tiu who's next? Jai Reyes? Parating isa or dalawang player yung naiiwan na magdadala ng team. Unlike nung 2002, the whole first five carries the team. Kaya malakas sila nun. Nung 2005 three players blossomed, okay na sana parang history reapeats itself nung 2002 but UST was just lucky.

The problem with Ateneo is they lived and they died with this championship. After 2002 and 2003, Ateneo had to wait for Intal, Kramer, and Escalona to blossom into certified UAAP superstars before they became serious title contenders. When LA was left after Wesley, Enrico, and Larry were gone, he was alone to carry the team. Just like this coming season, Ateneo (debatable though) will rely on Chris Tiu if he's still coming back.

yeah your right. We (DLSU) only have 11 championships. U guys really dominated the NCAA with around 14 championships. While Lasalle (still wasnt a university majority of its time in the ncaa) only won 5. But when lasalle and ateneo were both in the Uaap we began to dominate since then winning six and ADMU winning 3. I got this from wikipedia and its accurate enough. U guys should stop recruiting na from your juniors team. Just an observation (barrocoso, austria, not impressive).

Mainly from the NCAA because DLSU WAS NOT A UNIVERSITY FOR LIKE HalF A CENTURY. we only won five but since the transfer to the UAAP, we have dominated. In total we have 12(sana 13 if not for "scandal" and ateneo has won 3 in the UAAP to add to its great total of 17. -And a message to the super bias UAAP board, WHAT NOW BITCHES! ESPECIALLy Far fucking Eastern. lol
