  • Jeff Mangum is the greatest IRL music troll ever.

  • This is pretty far from entertaining.

  • He must have recovered from this.. he seems fine and good now on the videos from last night's performance for the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

  • wow, it's sid barrett all over again...

  • he's so depressed because... well... just look at it all! What's not to be depressed about? We're all slowly killing ourselves.

  • @AubynStafford I'm not killing myself. If you feel that way, remember, it's across the tracks, not down the river. I recommend you shoot yourself full of insulin. That's the way to go. DO IT!!!

  • All of you fuckers whine and baww

"Oh Jeff Magnum ur so sad why you depressed your so good!"

Jeff Magnum isn't the only member of the band you retards.

A band is not the same without all of the original members. If Magnum made a comeback without any the original NMH lineup, they would suck.

    Refer to the Smashing Pumpkins.

All of you who enjoy talking about Jeff Magnum, kill yourselves, because your life is probably more meaningless than his, or mine.

    -Regards

    The Baron of Propane

  • @LeBaronDePropane Jeff IS Neutral Milk Hotel, buddy. All of the other musicians were from the Elephant 6 collective and filled in where needed. NMH wasn't a 'band' in the traditional sense, just a monicker for the project. Jeff's songs stand upon their own, he doesn't need anybody else - just take a listen to the Live at Jittery Joe's album - that's why he's an amazing songwriter.

  • @MrGrunge88

    >implying that every musician besides the lead singer is disposable

    >on another note, you're probably one of those faggots who say Corgan is the only real SP member

    he doesn't need anybody else?

Okay, he'll just play bass, drums, guitar, trumpet, and sing. That would be a killer live concert.

  • @LeBaronDePropane He's not just the "lead singer", he's the songwriter..the only songwriter. Clearly you don't know anything about writing music or even the Elephant 6 Collective scene in general so arguing any further would be a moot point, but you don't need all of those extra instruments to create amazing music. All of the songs were written by Mangum, every other part was recorded simply for the sake of varied instrumentation. His songs don't need other instruments to sound good.

  • @MrGrunge88 I can't help but say that i strongly disagree. I must agree with you that this a pointless argument, we're both delusional about music. But honestly, music without instruments isn't instruments comrade. Plus the band was called "Neutral Milk Hotel" not "Jeff Magnum". Neutral Milk Hotel is Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Magnum is a separate entity entirely. That's like saying "The brain IS the human" completely disregarding the other necessary parts that make up an organism.

  • @LeBaronDePropane Jeff Mangum + Guitar = Neutral Milk Hotel...I'm not really sure why this is so hard a concept to grasp. You could replace any musician that has accompanied him in the various NMH tours and nobody could tell the difference. You remove Mangum from the equation and the whole thing falls apart. Jeff isn't the "brain" of NMH's "body", he's the "Ego", the inextricable essence that makes NMH, NMH. Anyone who has listened to his music for any length of time would tell you that.

  • He looks like he wants to rape the entire audience.

  • want sweater!

  • He probably wrote the first part of this during a mental breakdown and finished it later when he was a bit more stable

  • This is probably the most frustrated song I've ever heard

  • Psychosis? No.

  • That was reaal.

  • 4:43

  • @sjt900 I don't think he's freaking out, he just got shocked by the mic. Then again, with Jeff Mangum, you never really know...

  • @sjt900 He looks like he got punched by a ghost. Like, right in the face. The ghost was probably like, "use another god damned chord!"

  • Comment removed

  • i dont get it...

  • We are wrecking through your rovers, we are swimming through your speakers!

  • What's Koster playing?

  • Bellamy is a chode.

  • 2:56

    OHGODNO D:

  • He died of H overdose...he did a lot of solo stuff before the end.

  • @MrManboobie You've got some bad information im afraid Mr. Manboobie.

  • Why wont he blink?

  • where did you find this video?

  • lol

  • PSYCHOSIS!?

  • did u have some trouble syncing the audio?

  • Comment removed

  • You know, I don't think Jeff was the most stable guy in the world, but I don't think he's showing signs of psychosis in this video. It looks like he just got shocked by making contact with the microphone. You should really change the video description, please.

  • His facial expressions say tortured

  • I will seriously marry the person who can find me that sweater

  • Rubby Bulbs/Beautiful Baby/Swimming In Your Speakers

Swimming is also known as snow song pt 2

  • I WANT TO HAVE BABIES WITH HIS SWEATER

  • @AustinShirkey I found the same one at Bon Ton!

  • This guy fucking lost it.

  • So incredible......too soon.........too late...

  • goddamn this is so cool...

    plus his sweater is win.

  • Okay, I had no idea who this "Bellamy" fellow was, so I had to look him up. He seems pretty badass at music theory, which Jeff Mangum isn't so fluent in, since let's take this song as an example, is just one chord. HOWEVER, Jeff Mangum can fit 1000000000000 times more feeling and soul into one chord, than Mr. Bellamy could ever hope to find in complex scales and arpeggios.

    I rest my case.

  • Best song with 2 chords ever.

  • @lateralus462 What about Whole Lotta Love?

  • @lateralus462 @Whole Lotta Love technically has 2 chords.

  • What in the world is Julian playing?

  • I would be scared shitless if I saw a guy singing to me like that.

  • why are people comparing bellamy and mangum? they're two totally different people. Jeff mangum and NMH are amazing. that's a fact. Bellamy is amazing too though. Why can't everyone just let people enjoy the music they want to without comparing and shooting down others favorite bands?

  • this COOOULD be made into a heavy metal song...I NEED TO TASTE YOUR VOICE IN MY MOUTH!I NEED TO TASTE YOUR VOICE IN MY MOUTH!I NEED TO FILL YOUR LUNGS WITH SMALLPOX! it would go something like that...

  • Metal... No thank you. Don't ruin Jeff's masterpiece. BUT! Try it yourself, on your own time.

  • @fractallaaake it already is man!!! i have 4 giggs on my ipod from every show hes ever done. and he does this song with drums and sings the shit out of it.

  • @angelzyt43 cool!

  • Jeff's face at the end made me want to cry. He looked so tortured.

  • wow.

  • WOW! Amazing. Thank you for posting this!

I love Jeff Mangum and Matt Bellamy. Why compare? Just enjoy it.

  • holy fucking shit. awesome

  • love jeff mangum.

  • 2:38

  • Jeff Mangum's sweater= Epic win

  • Damn straight.

  • is it true, has jeff joined the circus?

  • I am terrified. I am fascinated. I am in awe.

  • The other day, someone insisted that Matt Bellamy is a deeper and more talented musician than Jeff.

  • HAH. Well, people are entitled to their own opinions, so, more power to 'em.

But Mangum will trump Bellamy in my book any day.

    His name even sounds cooler.

  • I feel morally corrupt just mentioning Mangum and Bellamy in the same sentence without the words "long live" and "fuck" included in there somewhere. Respectively of course.

  • of course. the accuser even went as far as to mock two headed boy. what are kids coming to today?

  • @worstjazzer Yeah, but Bellamy's a faggot.

That's what you were getting around to right?

  • @worstjazzer Long live Mangum, long live Bellamy, I would fuck both of them, erotically

  • that guy needs to die

  • @Beck436 as a musician bellamy is technically better and more talented... but when it comes to depth and emotion, mangum just shits all over him

  • @FolkMusicWins

The argument covered both aspects; he considered Bellamy more genuine.

  • @angelzyt43

I know, I could be wrong, But I also know psychosis can come easily to those with bi polar disorder after lack of sleep. He may not have BD, but im just saying it kinda seems like he might...

  • @PistachioG

its possible, but ive never seen him freak out like that, only in sailing through.

and i dont know if anyone agrees but it seems like this concert was really, haunted and seemed a little sick, and evil.

  • haha ya me too

  • to tell you the truth, I think it could be the first signs of psychosis. i dont want to read into it too much ( and there is a chance that he is just realy in to the music) , but I know for a fact that he was sleep deprived towards the end of their tour, and that can trigger psychosis. I have a family member who went through psychosis twice, and I do feel that these could be him showing signs of it. 30 hours of no sleep can realy mess you up...

  • @PistachioG thats not because of sleep man, if its anything but phycosis, it would be an ilness.

  • we are swimming in your speakers

  • He looked really sad

  • hes obviously not okay in the head right here, hes all pale and shit, and if you watch the vidoe he looks in the background and then turns to the band and says something and then turns back around and plays a little harder. as if hes pissed off or kind of fed up. and usually people laugh at him at shows and call him names. and maybe he takes himself to a better place when people do this to him. someone just happen to catch it on tape. people like you who make fun of semen covered mountains. =/

  • Do you have evidence of people making fun of him? I've never seen it.

  • @Bahomme : He said it himself. type in jeff mangum interview on google, the first one i think if not then try 2 or 3.

  • I'm not finding it.

  • @Bahomme look harder its easy as hell to find

  • just send a link or something.

  • the hell is that that julian is playing?!?!

  • ha id plus one but i don't want ruin the joke

  • Jeff actually has Polaroids disease

  • "Jeff Mangum showing signs of psychosis". I guess you're the all knower and overseer of truth and morality then?

  • wtf at 4:44

  • Jeff Mangum's weird as shit, the biggest fans will admit it. Listen to Communist Daughter, he sings about mountains of semen

  • ha ha not mountains of semen, "semen stains the mountain tops" so basically the chicks got jizz all over her tittays

  • @KOL1402 lol i know, but i thought the the mountains of cum was funnier haha

  • yeah ha ha that provoked a horrible image in my head

  • he's worse than that.... but it's semen stained mountaintops, not mountains of semen. its supposed to be about sexual immaturity, which is probably weirder than mountains of semen.

  • Loving the jumper

  • his gaze is soul penetrating ED

  • soul penetrating erectile dysfunction?

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with having some really good music change your life (though I can't understand or imagine it happening), but there's something infuriating about watching a jerk circle of fans trying to outdo each other in displays of exclamatory praise of Jeff Mangum and reaping the swathes of +1s that inevitably follow.

  • i think you said that to get a +1

  • Maybe I did. Keep up the cynicism brother/sister!

  • Dr Avelaz

I see an artist responding ones music. I don't really see unusal or bizarre behavior. wondering what are you are seeing that might come up with the psychosis comment.

  • Turns out there's a soundboard rip of this performance online. If you can sync it up with the video it sounds amazing.

  • I don't really see the signs of psychosis to be honest. It's an intense song and he plays all his songs intense, that's not psychosis that's being in the music

  • how is he showing signs of psychosis? he does seem to acting a bit stranger than usual.... but i wouldnt say its psychosis.

  • You need to familiarize yourself with what's called a "joke".

  • is there a recorded version of this song?

  • technically

  • this video didnt used to be un-synced. i dont know what happened.

  • yeah thats really weird.

  • Astounding. He is the most inspirational person and has changed me for the better.

  • Does that disturb you?

  • Comment removed

  • although the quality of this video/sound is horrible, i have to watch it regularly...

  • the other chords d

  • It stinks that this video is out of sync.

  • i voted this 4 by accident, sorry jeff, lots of lovesss

  • i've never watched a ayoutube video as much as i have this one....ace

  • love you jeffffff.

  • where are these so called signs of psychosis?

  • 2:53

  • there should be more comments about how amazing this iss..

  • somebody please tell me what chord this is

  • i think A

  • Yeah, it's A.

  • dude, it's A,

  • it's A, brah.

  • This video makes sweaters look cool giant.

  • I can only think of one word: intense.

  • How is this the best NMH on youtube? More please

  • how can i get this song??????

  • Rednaxela, I have it.

if you have aim, contact me. I'm pomegranatemilk.

  • This is an amazing performance; I would kinda like to get a hold of this song somehow as well. Any efforts to make this a reality would be much appreciated. Cheers.

  • maybe you should support NMH and buy it.

  • maybe it was never released officially!

  • come back NMH!!

  • Jeff's been sighted at a lot of OTC and AIS shows. Most in Chicago. Keep your eyes open, he's back on the scene ;)

  • haha! I've hit my nose on the mic before.

  • He was actually getting electrocuted by the mic.

  • yeah I saw it at about 4:45... that shit hurts man.

  • holy fuck yeah! that shit's happened to me before and the fact that jeff made that face and kept singing flawlessly shows how wonderful he is!

  • fucking amazing this is the best version of this song!!!!!!

  • It definitely is.

  • the music makes me stop breathing

  • Jeff looks like he is going to kill someone by the end of the song. The entire video is so intense, it's frightening.

Yet for some reason, I can't stop watching.

  • he looks dosed. anyone know what kind of guitar he is playing?

  • 1959 Gibson ES-125t. He mentions it's a 1959 in another video, and I know the model because I have the same type (albeit a 1966). Really great and rather cheap vintage Gibsons.

  • well i watched the whole thing & didn't see anything that seemed like psychosis or like he was stoned. Seemed he definitely got a 'bite' of electricity for a second, obviouse by the startlement. Just another great performance by an amazing singer to me :)

  • lol @ arguing over nothing.

  • Jeff's jumper is brilliant

  • I see no signs of psychosis...he just is really feeling what he is singing, which is not unusual for Jeff Mangum. At the end, he seems to twitch a bit, but I think he just got shocked by the mic. You can hear him talk about stuff like that happening on numerous bootleg shows.

  • Everyone is aware that Jeff requires no oxygen, but after watching this, it also appears he blinking is not necessary.

  • *THAT blinking

  • when he blinks he sucks up more oxygen

  • He wrote a song named "She Ate A Lot Of Acid". The entire Elephant 6 collective is inextricably related to psychedelic drugs, and anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves. I can quote multiple interviews with Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss, and Jeff Mangum where they allude to pot, acid, mushrooms, or more than one.

Also, if you had even the slightest clue as to what acid is and the way it changes a person, you'd realize how stupid the "oh you just want to be cool" argument is.

  • This is as bad as starting a Critic Magazine, making sure everyone knows the Loch Ness Monster doesn't exist. And you have to realize, Jeff isn't always writing about himself. Or from HIS point of view.

(Also, it should be noted the song's title was actually "She Did A Lot Of Acid"...)

  • i downloaded the whole show and he has a seems very sensible when he has a conversation with the crowd. he also mentions the mic shocking him at least 3 times

  • that could get annoying! hey where did you download the whole show from?

  • He could be not tripping and just in a crazy state.

  • yeah, he doesn't do drugs, i don't think

  • Seriously? Come on, do some fucking research. He definitely used to do drugs, he may not now. Listen to "A Conversation with Robert Schneider" from one of the early NMH demos. It is actually Will Hart and Jeff, and they talk about smoking pot.

The Elephant 6 collective is a great thing, and while it may not want to make a big deal about the matter, it definitely has some drug use involved.

  • i'm sure there is - you know how musicians are lol.

  • Yeah, it is nothing but a shock that is very common if you play electrical guitar while singing and the guitar is not ground bound. I do not see him as having done either acids of mushrooms at this song. I see it as I see most NMH video recordings. Intense. And truthful.

  • Looks like he is tripping pretty hard. After watching this go watch Jimi Hendrix at the Miami Pop festival.

Absolutely amazing performance, and this isn't even a song I like by Jeff. I don't think this is psychosis either, just some potent 'cid or maybe, less likely, psilocybin.

  • i don't think he even did acid

  • if you read an interview or two you would realize what you're saying is stupid. and an acid reference doesnt make you cool. especially when you call it 'cid.

  • Ya the mic shocked him. Its not uncommon, and it startles you every time.

  • so powerful

  • yes it is sir!

it made me move my bowels.

    meow

  • so strange that the stalker becomes the stalked...i shall turn the tables back to the way the sweet lord satan intended my dear fecal friend.

  • hahahah @ 4.44

  • so what happned at 4:44???????
