@AubynStafford I'm not killing myself. If you feel that way, remember, it's across the tracks, not down the river. I recommend you shoot yourself full of insulin. That's the way to go. DO IT!!!
@LeBaronDePropane Jeff IS Neutral Milk Hotel, buddy. All of the other musicians were from the Elephant 6 collective and filled in where needed. NMH wasn't a 'band' in the traditional sense, just a monicker for the project. Jeff's songs stand upon their own, he doesn't need anybody else - just take a listen to the Live at Jittery Joe's album - that's why he's an amazing songwriter.
@LeBaronDePropane He's not just the "lead singer", he's the songwriter..the only songwriter. Clearly you don't know anything about writing music or even the Elephant 6 Collective scene in general so arguing any further would be a moot point, but you don't need all of those extra instruments to create amazing music. All of the songs were written by Mangum, every other part was recorded simply for the sake of varied instrumentation. His songs don't need other instruments to sound good.
@MrGrunge88 I can't help but say that i strongly disagree. I must agree with you that this a pointless argument, we're both delusional about music. But honestly, music without instruments isn't instruments comrade. Plus the band was called "Neutral Milk Hotel" not "Jeff Magnum". Neutral Milk Hotel is Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Magnum is a separate entity entirely. That's like saying "The brain IS the human" completely disregarding the other necessary parts that make up an organism.
@LeBaronDePropane Jeff Mangum + Guitar = Neutral Milk Hotel...I'm not really sure why this is so hard a concept to grasp. You could replace any musician that has accompanied him in the various NMH tours and nobody could tell the difference. You remove Mangum from the equation and the whole thing falls apart. Jeff isn't the "brain" of NMH's "body", he's the "Ego", the inextricable essence that makes NMH, NMH. Anyone who has listened to his music for any length of time would tell you that.
You know, I don't think Jeff was the most stable guy in the world, but I don't think he's showing signs of psychosis in this video. It looks like he just got shocked by making contact with the microphone. You should really change the video description, please.
Okay, I had no idea who this "Bellamy" fellow was, so I had to look him up. He seems pretty badass at music theory, which Jeff Mangum isn't so fluent in, since let's take this song as an example, is just one chord. HOWEVER, Jeff Mangum can fit 1000000000000 times more feeling and soul into one chord, than Mr. Bellamy could ever hope to find in complex scales and arpeggios.
why are people comparing bellamy and mangum? they're two totally different people. Jeff mangum and NMH are amazing. that's a fact. Bellamy is amazing too though. Why can't everyone just let people enjoy the music they want to without comparing and shooting down others favorite bands?
this COOOULD be made into a heavy metal song...I NEED TO TASTE YOUR VOICE IN MY MOUTH!I NEED TO TASTE YOUR VOICE IN MY MOUTH!I NEED TO FILL YOUR LUNGS WITH SMALLPOX! it would go something like that...
@fractallaaake it already is man!!! i have 4 giggs on my ipod from every show hes ever done. and he does this song with drums and sings the shit out of it.
I feel morally corrupt just mentioning Mangum and Bellamy in the same sentence without the words "long live" and "fuck" included in there somewhere. Respectively of course.
I know, I could be wrong, But I also know psychosis can come easily to those with bi polar disorder after lack of sleep. He may not have BD, but im just saying it kinda seems like he might...
to tell you the truth, I think it could be the first signs of psychosis. i dont want to read into it too much ( and there is a chance that he is just realy in to the music) , but I know for a fact that he was sleep deprived towards the end of their tour, and that can trigger psychosis. I have a family member who went through psychosis twice, and I do feel that these could be him showing signs of it. 30 hours of no sleep can realy mess you up...
hes obviously not okay in the head right here, hes all pale and shit, and if you watch the vidoe he looks in the background and then turns to the band and says something and then turns back around and plays a little harder. as if hes pissed off or kind of fed up. and usually people laugh at him at shows and call him names. and maybe he takes himself to a better place when people do this to him. someone just happen to catch it on tape. people like you who make fun of semen covered mountains. =/
he's worse than that.... but it's semen stained mountaintops, not mountains of semen. its supposed to be about sexual immaturity, which is probably weirder than mountains of semen.
I don't think there's anything wrong with having some really good music change your life (though I can't understand or imagine it happening), but there's something infuriating about watching a jerk circle of fans trying to outdo each other in displays of exclamatory praise of Jeff Mangum and reaping the swathes of +1s that inevitably follow.
I see an artist responding ones music. I don't really see unusal or bizarre behavior. wondering what are you are seeing that might come up with the psychosis comment.
I don't really see the signs of psychosis to be honest. It's an intense song and he plays all his songs intense, that's not psychosis that's being in the music

1959 Gibson ES-125t. He mentions it's a 1959 in another video, and I know the model because I have the same type (albeit a 1966). Really great and rather cheap vintage Gibsons.
well i watched the whole thing & didn't see anything that seemed like psychosis or like he was stoned. Seemed he definitely got a 'bite' of electricity for a second, obviouse by the startlement. Just another great performance by an amazing singer to me :)
I see no signs of psychosis...he just is really feeling what he is singing, which is not unusual for Jeff Mangum. At the end, he seems to twitch a bit, but I think he just got shocked by the mic. You can hear him talk about stuff like that happening on numerous bootleg shows.
He wrote a song named "She Ate A Lot Of Acid". The entire Elephant 6 collective is inextricably related to psychedelic drugs, and anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves. I can quote multiple interviews with Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss, and Jeff Mangum where they allude to pot, acid, mushrooms, or more than one.
Also, if you had even the slightest clue as to what acid is and the way it changes a person, you'd realize how stupid the "oh you just want to be cool" argument is.
This is as bad as starting a Critic Magazine, making sure everyone knows the Loch Ness Monster doesn't exist. And you have to realize, Jeff isn't always writing about himself. Or from HIS point of view.
(Also, it should be noted the song's title was actually "She Did A Lot Of Acid"...)
i downloaded the whole show and he has a seems very sensible when he has a conversation with the crowd. he also mentions the mic shocking him at least 3 times
Seriously? Come on, do some fucking research. He definitely used to do drugs, he may not now. Listen to "A Conversation with Robert Schneider" from one of the early NMH demos. It is actually Will Hart and Jeff, and they talk about smoking pot.
The Elephant 6 collective is a great thing, and while it may not want to make a big deal about the matter, it definitely has some drug use involved.
Yeah, it is nothing but a shock that is very common if you play electrical guitar while singing and the guitar is not ground bound. I do not see him as having done either acids of mushrooms at this song. I see it as I see most NMH video recordings. Intense. And truthful.
Looks like he is tripping pretty hard. After watching this go watch Jimi Hendrix at the Miami Pop festival.
Absolutely amazing performance, and this isn't even a song I like by Jeff. I don't think this is psychosis either, just some potent 'cid or maybe, less likely, psilocybin.
if you read an interview or two you would realize what you're saying is stupid. and an acid reference doesnt make you cool. especially when you call it 'cid.

"Oh Jeff Magnum ur so sad why you depressed your so good!"
Jeff Magnum isn't the only member of the band you retards.
A band is not the same without all of the original members. If Magnum made a comeback without any the original NMH lineup, they would suck.
Refer to the Smashing Pumpkins.
All of you who enjoy talking about Jeff Magnum, kill yourselves, because your life is probably more meaningless than his, or mine.
