also, with automated switches & signals...very little reason to have anyone in caboose. original reasons: 1) to manually warn approaching trains when stopped. 2) to close switches behind train entering & leaving sidings (meeting places). RRs also said many injuries in cabooses.
close to where I live...Everett, WA, BNSF 'work train' (maintenance) has 2 cabs so workers can get to work sites...Lots of places can't drive to.
me and my son were at this location in the spring of 09, what an awesome place to see lots of trains. caught an awesome sunset as well when we were there.
Just think of the millions of trucks that are taken off the road with those things. They even make Smart cars and Toyota Preus look like heavy polluters then you break down the tonnage to emissions ratio. I lam not a tree hugger I am a train hugger.
There are two people that got all the coal from the empty coal cars in their stocking on Christmas... I mean who could dislike this train pR0N! Great video Great questions... and great answers... Thanks!
THis is the most awsomely insane video I have ever seen , you just can't leave you recording post you might miss a train. I guarentee you can get your ass full of locomotive horns, and sound right here. An umbrella a lawn chair tripod- camera an ice chest sandwiches coke or beer ,what more could you want!!!
@cchan006 Excellent vid. Maybe u can answer some questions: 1. Following the lead locomotive, why some of the following locomotives face forward while others face backward? Is there a reason for that, or is it just random? 2. Same with semitrailers (for trucks)... some face front and others face the rear. 3. How are length of train and no. of freight cars determined? 4. Why was the caboose phased out? Thanks!!
@dav0352: Way locomotives face can be random or not, but there's usually at least one that's facing backward, so it can travel the other way without turning it around. Trailers are random now because they are lifted off instead of driven off a ramp like before. Train length can be subject to customer demand, labor/wage rules, too many factors to explain here. Caboose was phased out by EOTD (End Of Train Device) or FRED (Flashing Rear End Device), which is connected to the air brake system.
this is right in front of my house was always wondering what u dorks do with theses videos....... try livin next to the tracks and see how long u still like these things
Sorry you don't like the location of your house but some of us Dorks as you call us would kill for a location like that. Have you ever considered moving and selling it to someone that would appreciate it?
Whew! Ever since I saw my first train when I was around five I was hooked forever! I'm always amazed at the power those engines have and the power they had on a little boy's imagination. I love this video!!
This location looks like heaven to me. I was tempted to say that if my favorite band was there, it would be, but it doesn't look like they would have much time between trains to play anything! I have never seen one train right behind another like that before. One signal block away, maybe, but never that close! Great video!
I spent a summer working at the General Mills plant next to Beverly Yard in Cedar Rapids Iowa...same line as here.. pretty much the same results. Lots of meets, lots of coal, lots of horn. Mix in a few manifests and doublestacks, plus the random autorack or Z blowing thru at 70, and there you have it :)
AWESOME, 5*****! I once got into the cab of an SD90MAC. It was in Victorville, the engineer was so nice, HE OFFERED ME AND MY DAD A CAB RIDE ALL THE WAY TO LONG BEACH! To bad we had to say no. But as a little tike then, getting in the cab perriod was all I needed. I already loved trains, but that was the day I set my life to be an engineer! I still have that dream!
Nice video, my son and I were just there in the beginning of April. Little disappointed we didnt see that many trains. Maybe a Wed. night and the economy had something to do with it.
The place is Hershey, Nebraska, next town west of North Platte. No address at the crossing where I was at, but if you go there, it's not difficult to find.
5770 is an AC4400, or as UP calls it, C44ACCTE (Controlled Tractive Effort) which is DPU capable. UP's Dash 8's are in the 9000 series, and the roster numbers for them hasn't changed since I took the video.
My guess is 4 mains, one siding for the grain elevator, and one extra pair of tracks. At O'Fallons to the west, the tracks diverge as two mains, one pair to Cheyenne, and the other pair to the Powder River Basin.
I plan to do some rail watching myself in a few weeks, This will be one of my stops..along with the new tower. Any other good spots you could recommend, since you seem to be familiar with the area?? Just wondering, Thanks in advance.
O'Fallons, Nebraska is a wye about 4 miles west of Hershey. Most coal trains diverge north for the Power River Basin. Other trains diverge south which go to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
I used to live there for about 10 years. Grew up there in everything. It is officially the busiest crossing in America. No joke. Look it up. I still can't believe they haven't put up a viaduct like they have in North Platte (12 miles east) and Sutherland 6 miles west.
I used to work out of North Platte last year as a student engineer heading up to South Morrill (coal trains). So yeah, you'll see a ton of trains going through Hershey everyday. I also worked in the yard. Talk about learn some interesting things about the railroad.
I spent most of the morning in Bailey Yard, which included shooting the video of the East Hump. I was also at Cody Park to take photos of the 3977 and 6922. I was back in Denver, Colorado before sunset. Not all the trains I saw are in this video, and I don't think I was there longer than 2 hours, so yes, this place was very busy.
Yeah, Nebraska is pretty fun with all the UPRR traffic

UP coal trains mostly seen with AC4400's and sd9043MAC's
BNSF uses: Dash 9's, es44AC, sd70ACe's AC4400's.... they can not make up their mind
BN had 2 locomotives before they merged they used sd70MAC's and sd60M's... but before that it was sd40-2's and U boats

Yeah, I can believe that!
The locals seem to have no problems driving or walking across the crossing in a safe manner, despite the traffic.

Wow, that is a busy place. Do you suppose it is extra busy because of the floods in Iowa?
