Whatever the reason, it is a fact that the crew released a significant quantity of water during this mission, and I do remember that this action did indeed seem to attract the attention of a UFO that apparently came to investigate...perhaps they took a sample to determine what it was. We do try to recycle as much as possible on these trips, so I am sure there was good cause for this. It is so frustrating that NASA and our gov shares so little truth with the ones who pay for these projects.

Water tossed into space would immediately be sterilized by both the cryogenic temperatures and the solar radiation. It would be disassociated (molecules stripped down to atoms) fairly quickly. People should keep in mind that space, even interstellar space, is literally filled (thinly) with hydroxyl (mostly formaldehyde) anywise... this is organic in nature and good for hydrogen scoop propulsion systems.
