I love these techniques. They increase one's ability to remain calm under pressure. Composure is a great skill to have and it is trainable.
Further, there are many alternatives to this composure training: looking into a mirror, watching emotionally charged TV (comedy, horror, live surgery, American Idol!), doing zazen meditation (watching the images in your mind without reacting to them emotionally), doing chores without being distracted, remaining calm while talking to spouse/mother, etc.
These routines are the intellectual property of Religious Technology Center, which exercises authority ever their reproduction and use, including commercial exploitation.
These exercises are clearly aimed at making people easier to manipulate and compliant. The TR's are also building in unquestioning following of orders with reward and punishment- basic brainwashing or "thought reform" techniques.
@laserofjustice I did parts of a buddhist silent retreat which had me questioning the usefulness of all that silence. The silent meditation upon bringing out a compassionate nature does bring the message through to mind of how you should purpose mind & relate to influences within & without, but then you are foreclosed from using your voice as an instrument of good karma all the while that mind is disciplined to that silence. At least you can express humor with your posture and emotion
@daveyork0 That's a very deep answer, and silence is something used by some monks in Christian religion, too. I can see it's worth for focussing contemplation. The "TRs" used in $cientology claim to offer one thing whilst installing compliance and unthinking Pavlovian responses to the authority of the cult. Look at any cult from the Moonies to Jim Jones and there are similar techniques used to instill compliance.
FYI this is not OT training. This is the "communication course" or lower TRs. It's the first course they sell you, or the second after the purification rundown.
Anyone who signs up with any branch of Scientology (Narconon, Second Chance Rehab, WISE, etc.) gets this course.

Wow, pretty interesting stuff. Seems obvious that the whole OT Training is just a set of forced "acting lessons".
