@heb430 that was just things that he thought was beautiful in his life, it's not necessarily important directly to his life, just things he enjoyed and which were replayed just before he died
@heb430 I think he is trying to say that the simple things in life are the ones that matter the most. Like spending holidays with your family doing nothing but watching the sky, or sitting with your grandmother listening to stories. In the end it all comes down to a very few and simple but yet truly rewarding moments.
the most beautiful moment in cinematic history happened at 1:41... the rest just adds to it. Amazing movie, beautiful scene... and every time I watch it I cry.
Fantastic acting all round in this film, a beautiful piece. I have to say that as for endings/closing scenes is absolutely perfect. Mesmerizing. Touching. Cosmic. Beautiful. I'd say it pars with the likes of 2001 Space Odyysey as one of the best film closes our there.
Just like this movie...Life will eventually come to an end. The Bible says that we will die once and then be judged by God. If you ever lies, stolen, lusted after a woman/guy, hated, taken God's name etc your on your way to Hell. But Jesus (who is God) came and died on the cross taking our sins upon His sinless self. We broke the law He paid our fine. We need to repent (turn away from sin) and trust in Him alone and we will be forgiven and enter in Heaven when we die
@drexxar100 I agree however - sam mendez did nod to all the production crew of this movie. in addition, he did decide on the camera angles and 2 week rehearsal and most importantly - casting both kev spacey and annette benning and not forgetting - motivating the younger actors to be the best they could be. this movie wouldnt have been the probably the best movie ever made if not for sam mendez.
This movie has it all - it is funny, deep, poetic. On top of that it is visually and technically perfect in terms of cinematography. Pure poetry. I am almost under hypnosis when I watch it. I watched an interview with the director (Sam Mendes) who was telling a story about Spielberg watching the movie. After the movie was over Spielberg apparently only said "You have made a classic movie". And it is true - this is THE movie of the past 20 years.
@delete250 those are Lester's (the guy who died) clothes and she hugs them because she realizes just now that she really did change in a cold materialistic woman instead of being the same girl she was when she first met lester, and now she misses him.
What would you do if you found out your spouse had just died?? The clothes would be the closest connection to him after she stops thinking of herself (she throws the gun in the hamper & looks up & sees his clothes)...
@drexxar100 True, but I wouldn't agree that the "whole movie is built upon Lester's death." It's the theme that beauty can be found in unexpected ways, and the sense of fulfillment can come from little things, and... aw, fuck it. This movie has so many themes it's impossible to count 'em. The whole sexuality and repression theme is very important, though.
@drexxar100 I agree that screenwriters are overlooked, but directors also deserve credit. This is a movie that combines Alan Ball's thoughts with Sam Mendes artistic style. They both received Oscars, well deserved.
Lester Burnham:I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life...
"Hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world." Truly one of my favorite monologues from a movie. I love how Sam Mendes mixes memories with the location of characters when Lester is shot. It's a very powerful and thought out scene.
I just can't get over how compelling Kevin Spacey is as Lester Burnham! This scene is so beautiful and it really makes an effective appeal to the viewers pathos!!!!
Always that i want to die... Because i cant find sense to life... I just see this video... And i feel better and sometimes, just sometimes i smile... Then i dont kill myself....
@Jowannabe The movie is great and the ending, especially his last words, has something magic in it. It is so profound that it makes me cry but also relieve me. I can understand you, man. I often (always)feel pretty down too. Life is really hard but there are moments where I manage to detach from the oppressing reality and I feel so fine. I honestly alternate moments of intense joy and desire to live with moments where I'd like to disappear, not to exist.Search for what makes you smile, always!
Can this video get another million views and a couple hundred thousand thumbs up? I'm sure the 'Dislikes' were from people trying to click 'Like' too fast, and missed because they were busy fighting a tear.
Never seen the movie, heard this ending in a dance that competed at Hall Of Fame and had to find it. It sounds/looks really sad but I can see why its a beautiful/great/loved ending.
This scene is absolutely beautiful, it makes me cry like a baby every time I see it. but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst. <3 <3 <3

@BigNuno You've got to be kidding, right? The movie is just over ten years old. It's a classic for sure and one of my favorites, but don't make it sound like it's from a bygone era and movies today are nothing like it. 2010 was a great year for movies: The King's Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, 127 Hours, Blue Valentine, True Grit Social Network...
@pikappzac is 127 hours and social network a great movies! and dont agree with you. of course there are other great movies every years, but with the characteristics of this i dont see much. Over this years i found some good movies, try to whatch Mr. Nobody, Good dick, Amelie or The reader. In my country there is a saying: what someone likes is not dibatable :) for me what is great can be horrible for you ;)
@BigNuno Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. I said American Beauty is a great movie, I just think that saying "they don't make movies like this anymore" was a strange comment for a movie that's just over a decade old. Movie making hasn't really changed since American Beauty came out, that's all I was really saying. And Amelie and The Reader are both great movies, I don't know the other two.
@pikappzac just read your comments. I would go further with what you said. american beauty is a one off. personally, i believe its the best movie ever made. i do think there have been a few great movies since - lost in translation, thirst and let the right one in, but the story, the characters, the diagloue and music and the themes all add up to something bigger than a hollywood movie, for me.
I am sorry struckworld... sometimes red eyes mean that you want to kill an animal or maybe even a plant. Be careful there, the rabbi stays awake for a reason.
here's what I recommend about red eyes, get this book: Friday the Rabbi slept late. open it, leave it open. thats it. like a brand new firebird. lol. i had a red mustand, thank God I traded it in for a white toyota yaris. Now thats a lifesaving decision for me. I don't know why we buy ferraris or cars that go so fast, ya know? sometimes, we just don't want our license suspended.
hey struckworld, don't worry about red eyes, it happens sometimes, just, i don't know, relax, stop holding onto it, and let it flow through you like rain... I am not sure why your eyes are red, perhaps you stayed awake like the rabbi. lol thats a book, kinda, i'm not sure what it is, but I have a copy of it, and its nice, I guess I should read it. It doesn't like kabbalah, alot.@!
What I head, from my Grand Mother, "if you make a mistake, cover it up". Isn't that so, and from my mother " I love you", and from my father " The little train goes up the mountain". Sometimes those lessons in life carry an echo that last eternal value. Friendship with life, love with docility, happiness and liberation, freedom and freedom. To be who you are, angel, is to be an ever morsel of gods' holy page. A tablet of wisdom, a tablet of life, a tablet of all experiences, a torah of happiness
How much has this film done for World Union, you cannot imagine, or try to say, other than that the kids know, that this scene, is the Scene. And pine trees can do nothing more than allow our admiration of those needles that don't prick, and allow red like turtle shells to go through amazement like a sled on wheel sublime. If my dad was on Earth, he'd tell me to continue, and if he is in Heaven, he'd tell me thanks for all the work that beautiful Jews have done. I can't say much more, not much
Should I say that majoring in Philosophy at UF, this scene brought me to Mysticism, in a light that has captivated me, held me prisoner to a flight that is gorgeous. And I can do nothing more than say thanks, thanks, for saying a truth. "it is hard to stay mad when there is so much beauty in the world". And the beauty is you, the beauty is us, those who know, those who cannot be wise, and those who just live a life of imbecility. How gorgeous is our studipity once we meet pure intelligence.
I remember my mom teaching me "ton papa est avec les anges" lol, your dad is with the angels, and this second, this eternal opening to that glorious Heaven all encompassing with all the good that we want, I admire. And we live to admire this divinity in every situation, clean like a chant from a place way beyond place, a trace that has nothing left but a sound, and a sound silent, a remembrance that is us, as us, and you, as you. How curious god can manifest potentials of inspirations, that can
And when we Go, we see that god is the God we've belived in. A god so subtle that he is God, a subtletly too subtle to even began to breath. And we see in each other the same echo that has echoed every experience. We learn of the maple trees, and we admire this scene of beauty from the heart of gold that is so terrestrial. And these stars teach us by glimmers of remembrance that only through only can many come to dance. And the dance of return is enough to keep us alive, safe, and welcoming to I
The most Beautiful Moment is Awakening to the Divine Life that is so awesome that beyond Himself is nothing more than an empty vastness of potentiality. To be here in this vastness is as our rememberance of our life events, fully compassionate of all that we've done. A life to encounter variety, and enlighten Heaven...How gorgeous are the blossoms of God.
thanks so much for posting this. In the day to day madness of our lives, it is good to have reminders that we are all just here for such a limited time, so we may as well leave peacefully, in gratitude and enjoy ourselves and each other.
@TonyWRO he was the one that killed lester. it shows a gun missing in his cabinet and you see the wife walking outside when the gun shot is fired. she might have planned to kill him but its obvious that she was upset over it and felt guilty for what she was considering doing (if that was what she was going to do...).
This entire movie is special. It reminds us that there's more to life than appearance, money or being socially accepted. That we shouldn't be put down by those meaningless things, and just need to find ourselves and enjoy the beauty of life. There isn't a single scene in the movie I didn't like. The score, the dialogue, the images, it's all special!
@TheAntiChr1st HI....I agree with you. This movie, when i saw it back in 2000 (unreal its 11 years ago), It embossed a print on to my mind and soul. It made me think and it the haunting music just paralyses me ever time i play it. AB for me is the best movie ever made. I love the diaglogue, the music, the characters ...the crazy zany story. It is a snap shot of middle class life. Its how we are encouraged to live yet beneath that vaneer is people at different levels trying to live. ..
I get goosebumps just waiting for this clip to load... Just the thought of the words to come, combined with Newman's score, draw my emotions to the surface.
@stevevv Yeah i agree. I watched this movie in january 2000 - when it was released in the UK. I watched it 4 times the week it came out. It containted so much meaning and higher learning ideas, I stiil think the guy who came up with this idea is a genius. Theres nothing like it before and certainly couldnt be copied in the future. It is to me the best movie ever made.
I LOVE how the reactions of every different person in his life to the gunshot is encorperated in between his memories. so brilliantly filmed. LOVE it!
Col Fitts would stop at nothing to "have things his way." His wife didn't question his homosexuality, he forced his son to live a "structured and disciplined" life, he loathed the gay neighbors across the street. Then seeing Lester, and his son with Lester, blew his mind. Lester automatically became THE primary issue in his life that had to be dealt with immediately for his sake and sanity.
Something I noticed. This film is so full of substance and symbolism, it's a work of cinematic mastery.

The film's theme wasn't original; it was also popular in films of the 1960s and '70s. Criticizing middle class culture was already a cliche when this film was made. But conservatives hated it nonetheless. I guess it's their job to oppose any questioning of convention. Liberals created the great expansion of America's middle class after WWII (suburbia), so they have a right to criticize it. Didn't this movie win the academy award for best picture in 1999?
I cried so hard...especially when little Janie showed up at the door
The quote really struck sth in me. I know exactly what he meant. All that beauty in the world...all those beautiful things you can still see even in times of great anguish, even when you are on the verge of giving up
" I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happen to me, but its hard to stay mad when there is so much Beauty in the world, sometimes I feel like I am seeing it all at once and its to much, my heart feels up like a balloon thats about to burst, and then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold onto it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment in my stupid little life" This line just moves me so much :)
@jonathanrobertb you cry because you know deep down that it's true... in the end nothing matters, and you're just content with the feeling that you lead a great life and everything in this beautiful world is still going to move on.
@jonathanrobertb Me too. I remember watching this with my younger brother, because I told him this was so film was so good, and just knowing I was going to be crying in front of him haha
@dimentedimages No, Ricky's dad killed him. He thought Lester was also gay and hid his sexuality behind his 'normal marriage'. So Ricky's dad kissed Lester because he thought he finally found someone like him. But Lester was not gay, he was just pissed off at his marriage and life. Ricky's dad was afraid that Lester would leak his secret so he killed Lester. You could see his blood-stained white shirt in this scene.
When i hear him talk about his boyscout experience. His street. What his wife was. I get so damn sad. I feel so bad. All he wanted was to just be. I was so sad he got shot but that last line is beautiful

Mustang...sexy lady in red lol. thats why i called it. such a nice bitch.
worldunionspirit 11 months ago
here's what I recommend about red eyes, get this book: Friday the Rabbi slept late. open it, leave it open. thats it. like a brand new firebird. lol. i had a red mustand, thank God I traded it in for a white toyota yaris. Now thats a lifesaving decision for me. I don't know why we buy ferraris or cars that go so fast, ya know? sometimes, we just don't want our license suspended.
worldunionspirit 11 months ago
hey struckworld, don't worry about red eyes, it happens sometimes, just, i don't know, relax, stop holding onto it, and let it flow through you like rain...

@TheUndertakerSaysRIP

Its how we are encouraged to live yet beneath that vaneer is people at different levels trying to live. ..

@dimentedimages No, Ricky's dad killed him. He thought Lester was also gay and hid his sexuality behind his 'normal marriage'. So Ricky's dad kissed Lester because he thought he finally found someone like him. But Lester was not gay, he was just pissed off at his marriage and life. Ricky's dad was afraid that Lester would leak his secret so he killed Lester. You could see his blood-stained white shirt in this scene.

Such powerful lines. My favorite part is when he says " I cant feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life"
