  • does this method dry out your brushes? can you use it on all types of brushes?

  • when you say alcohol, do you mean "isopropyl"? aka "rubbing alcohol? this method seems SOOO much cheaper, easier, and way faster. plus, i already have it in my bathroom. great tip. i hope i have understood you correctly.....because rubbing seems like it could damage my (expensive) brushes.

  • @watchmakeuptips obviously she/he needs to grow up

  • Hey Wayne, I wouldn't suggest using for 5 years because everytime you open it, some alcohol escapes from it and over long period of time, it won't be as effective anymore!

  • This man is a lifesaver!!!!!!!

  • this is going to change my life lol!

i'm always so bad about cleaning my brushes b/c it takes so long for them to dry and i have limited number of brushes. I will definitely clean my brushes regularly now. Thanks so much for this :D

  • I've learned so much thanks to you. :) lovelove your channel.

  • I've been cleaning my brushes like this since watching. Well not the same alcohol percent because of super bacteria growth but! It works perfect and my makeup even looks prettier because I always get the true color! Thanks for a great tip, guess next step is investment in better brushes!

  • Can anybody pls tell me the name of that liquid so i know what to get exactly? I live in canada...thanks!

  • @chelmay25 I think any brand of 99% alcohol will do. Try a drugstore.

  • Hi Wayne, can you clean foundation brushes the same way? I saw a video elsewhere using olive oil and anti-bacteria washing liquid to clean your brushes. It's great, but the drying time takes 1 night... (or maybe faster but I'm already sleeping... so)

  • AWESOME!

  • Wayne, im in the states, where do u buy this product, beauty supply store?

  • @BabyGirl4587958 What are you, 8 years old?

  • Comment removed

  • @BabyGirl4587958 Really, "you look so gay working with girl stuff"....grow up - what a stupid comment!

  • if i had the money, i'd fly you over to Singapore to do my wedding makeup. sold because of this. lol. sterilization is highly-valued in my country.

  • Is that product 99% alcohol and nothing else? or a special mix?

  • Is that rubbing alcohol?

  • i use foundation brush so i need to wash it after i use it cuz sumtimes i use it like 2 or 3 times not washing it

  • Do you have to exchange the alcohol after one brush cleaning or can you clean several brushes with the same alcohol solution? :O sorry for the stupid question btw I <3 U

  • Can sommeone tell me the list of ingredients, from , the metsolver4021? In my country i can't find it , but i am sure there is a similar product outhere ...

  • Pareidolia FTW. The "face" has clearly been watching Wayne's Guy-liner tutorial.

  • i love this. i can't stand cleaning my brushes simply beacuse i hate waiting for them to dry!! but! it must be done (of course). Quick question though: Does this method work for brushes used with waterproof/long wearing makeup formulas? It takes me forever to get my foundation/concealer brushes clean. xoxo thanks

  • 99% alcohol does not kill all the pathogens, it actually protect some. When the alcohol concentration is too high, the surface protein of bacteria denatures, and form a hard shell that nothing can penetrate. Hospital and other medical conditions always use 70% to 75% alcohol (dilute with water!)

  • IF THIS IS UR BATHROOM, I LUV IT, I LIKE THE MIRROR AND THE BIG WINDOWS LETTING A LOT OF LIGHT IN! I JUS HAD TO SAY... WINK ;)

  • I love ALL your videos :D Your my no.1 makeup guru! When cleaned with this 99% alcohol solution, does it leave an alcohol smell? I've been buying the M.A.C brush cleaner and they are $25 per bottle, I clean my brushes every day because I do believe all brushes need the tender loving care that they deserve AND to prevent my face from all the bacteria! I have no idea what the M.A.C cleaner has in it but it does leave some sort of alcohol smell to it... :S

  • @Nakedpetals Nah it doesnt :) Ive been doing this for about a year now and it leaves no smell because it evaporates in seconds

  • @PinkCherryGlitter Hi there, thanks for answering my question.... So do you just use the alcohol to clean your brushes? Do you need to dilute it with anything? Does the alcohol dry out your brushes?

  • @Nakedpetals I live in New Zealand and the two products i use to clean my brushes are Johnson's Baby Shampoo (no harmful chemicals to ruin the brush hairs) and Isopropyl Alcohol. I use isopropyl alcohol if I need my brushes to dry quickly when doing makeup, put some in a spray bottle and spray onto tissue then in a forward and backward motion wiping off any product. I use the shampoo once a week for a full brush clean then leave to dry in the hot water cupboard :)

  • @PinkCherryGlitter Oh cool, thanks for sharing your technique. I too live in NZ, where did you ever find your isopropyl alcohol? I've asked all hardware stores bunnings, mitre 10, paint shops etc... no luck! And then the old lady at the pharmacy was very suspicious and wouldn't sell me any bigger than a 45ml bottle which was $7!!! I've seen 500ml - 1Lt bottles on trade me and the NZ online Med shop but I don't want to look suspicious by ordering it off an online store :)

  • @Nakedpetals really! what city? i get mine from pharmacies. i get the 500ml bottle for $16 and lasts me forever! pour some into a $2 shop small spray bottle and you'll be set! you wont look suspicious buying isopropyl alcohol? dont worry at all, its not like its actual alcohol! i recommend buying from either a pharmacy or trademe.if the pharmacy doesnt have your size (e.g 500ml) you can ask them to order it in for you and it should arrive to that pharmacy in the afternoon or the next working day

  • @PinkCherryGlitter I'm from WGTN, how about you? I went into Life Pharmacy today and the girl there was really nice and luckily they had one bottle left of the 500ml for $17! I think the old lady the other day didn't want to sell it to my BF because she may have thought HE wanted to make drugs with it haha. Apparently people buy large amounts to make meth :S so they get suspicious to the people that want to buy large amounts of it. Thanks heaps! :D

  • I clean my brushes with gasoline, alcohol don't works perfectly on foundation -and lipbrush.

  • As someone who works in the medical profession and works with alcohol gel, its not effective if you just place it on your hands, or just place instruments in sterilising solution, it has to be worked into all the knooks or in this case all the bristles. Obviously its better than wiping on a tissue or washing in water but unless you work the alcohol in its no better than soap. xx

  • please help me what else can i use because I live in the US and I cannot get a hold of that please give me an alternitive

  • Have you seen a dirty brush under the microscope? Really, people, Clean your brushes!

  • Is this okay for synthetic brushes?

  • did surgical spirit B.P. will work?

  • i watched it 5 times and still couldnt see that face in the window????

  • Exellent tip - I am going to try it in the future...

  • How would you clean your makeup sponges? How often?

  • Do you feel this damages or dries out the bristles of natural or synthetic brushes at all? Do you agree with Yumita who said you need to use 70% instead? Can you use pharmaceutical rubbing alcohol?

  • Does rubbing alcohol work too?

  • Alcohol!! Of course! All this time I've been using soap and water and my brushes still wouldn't be dry overnight. Such simple genious. I love you.

  • Question: Would you recommend this method for cleaning brushes that were used to apply cream products (cream foundations). If not, what's a good way to clean them. Thanks!

  • I Keep reading comments about a face in the window but I don't see one. 0.o

  • thenk you for the info. i just wanted to ask once the water is dirty do u have to change it before u clean the next brush?

  • Great tips thank you for this. I am rathernew as a makeup artist and this is extremly helpful.

  • Can u use it on natural hair brushes?

  • Fantastic!! I have some breakout problems and I hate to be washing my broshes almost everytime I use them on a problem area, fast and sure bacterial free... THANK U!!

  • I just tried it and it seemed to ruined my brushes I don't like it. I rather stick to cleaning them with soap and water.

  • that method ruined my brushes

  • @selerat mine too

  • Id like to clean my brushes today, can I use regular like rubbing alcohol that you buy in the first aid aisle at drugstores. Pls lmk asap, thank you! And btw, all your videos are very helpful!

  • Is this sold in the US? Is it the name name? lol

  • i tried this method and my eye brushes made my eyes sting like crazy... what am i doing wrong? i'm using isopropyl alcohol 70% alcohol... :/ someone help please

  • @prittae Switch to 99% alcohol..it should work =)

  • I use a PARIAN SPIRIT CANISTER pot when cleaning my brushes with alcohol. its so handy. All the makeup falls from the brush into the bottom of the jar. So glad to hear someone else uses alcohol. When cleaning brushes everyday they take ages to dry if you wash them and can go smelly and mouldy and rot the glue. I am confident. like you, that when using alcohol, brushes are 'clean'. I do wash my big brushes with shampoo after removing makeup with a small amount of alcohol.

  • using 99% alcohol is good for ensuring that the microbes on your brushes will die, however it also promotes the growth of super bacteria that are resistant to the strong cleanser you are using.

So now your brushes are covered in SUPER RESISTANT bacteria that won't die when you use the strongest cleanser (99% alcohol) or even the weakest cleanser (soap + water). Then you put these bacteria onto your face.

  • but alcohol dries out bristtles?

  • i've watched numerous videos lately with make-up artists showing us how to "clean our brushes", however, most of them do not do it frequent enough for my liking, and their methods aren't good enough for me. I am acne prone, have sensitive skin, and wear almost every day. Some of these artists wash, ONCE A WEEK OR EVERY TWO WEEKS :O Major yuck. Foundation brushes especially should be washed EVERY DAY! thank you so much for this video Wayne <3 You are for certain the best :)

  • Great!! I just cleaned my brushes with alcohol and it works. I normally clean with hair shampoo, but some of the product was still in brushes. So I clean the tips of all brushes with alcohol and now they are vary clean. Thank you!

  • so can I use alcohol like ethanol I bought in pharmacie to disinfect wounds too?

  • I use a alcohol too, which i learned from the lady at the Dior counter here in Perth, Australia. best tip I ever got! I clean my brushes everytime I use them. Can't understand hownpeople let their foundation or concealer fester n their brushes. Makes me itch to even think of it!

  • Does this even work with cream-based products? ie: concealer or foundation brushes?

  • As I don't have as many brushes as you do sometimes I remove the color between applications on myself with an HD powder I don't really like (I think we all have one of these;-). This was recommended by a Japanese brush manufacturer.

  • Thanks for the vid. I've always thought that the soap and water method wasn't the best for bacteria as the ferrule always traps the water and breeds the stuff.

I tried the olive oil and that was the worst. Alcohol works the best. I can only get 95 percent her in France but that works fine and also around the house.

  • I love using dishwashing liquid. it has grease-cuing power. Brushes get clean and hygienic much faster than anything else.

  • wont the alcohol dry out the brush and damage it.

  • I use Sephora's brush cleaner, but it can take a day for my bigger brushes to dry!

Using alcohol won't dry out my brushes? For real?

  • Hey! I absolutely love your videos! You're great :) Just as an advice, if you don't mind, I wouldn't recommend using 99% alcohol, as it dryies so much there are some bacteria that may survive after processing a brush or a medical instrument with it. In hospital the best sterilizing method is of course the autoclave (that we won't use on make up brushes, of course) but possibly the next best thing is 70% alcohol, as it's not pure is not as drying so bacteria and viruses are eliminated.

  • @Yumita I was just about to say the same thing! As far as ISOPROPYL alcohol goes, a 70% concentration is much more effective at sanitizing. There are two reasons for this. As Yumita stated, the water in 70% allows the alcohol to remain in contact for a longer period. The second is that a 30% concentration of water is required for the alcohol to denature bacterial/viral/fungicidal proteins. So if you are using ISOPROPYL (Rubbing) alcohol, make sure it is a 70% concentration. Thanks guys!

  • i've always wondered how to disinfect eyeshadow..how do you it?

  • @raeannpayne the beauty so clean spray he mentioned is great for that, you just spray it over the pallette :)

  • is this for spot cleaning or does it deep clean?

  • @HoboMiky23 I would not use nail polish remover to clean your makeup brushes. Think about it: polish remover is dissolving lacquer on your nails. A lot of removers contain acetone which can be used for heavy duty cleaning. Do you really want that on your brushes, and in turn near your face? Don't do it!

  • Goss you are a godsend!

  • Thanks for the tip ive been using mac brush cleaner it exspensive and sometimes i dont feel my brushs are clean and i need my brushs clean or my face will brake out

  • does it matter what brand of alcohol i use? i mean can i go to any store like walmart or target to get the 99%?

  • does this dry them out?

  • is it also safe to use alcohol to clean makeup?

  • Can you use this method and not have to deep clean or is this like spot cleaning?

  • Hi, where can u get this stuff from in the uk??

  • Im confused wayne as ur older video was about spraying surgical spirit onto make up and now ur using beauty so clean? Is there a reason for this? Just so i know :)))) thanks x

  • I found some 91% alcohol at Target about a month ago, and I've used that twice to clean my brushes. They come out clean and they really do dry really fast. I've recently visited the Makeup Designory (MUD) store in SOHO, NYC and they sell 99% alcohol. They sell it for around $5 bucks or so.

  • Typo- I meant Singapore!

  • I'm proud of you, you're a responsible makeup artist who really cares for his clients. Thumbs up, from the little sunny island of singspore

  • Hi can u tell me if I can also clean my foundation brush with it? Because my one is quite bad and if it will work on the oily brush

    Thank you

  • Hi can u tell me if I can also wash the foundation brush with the alcohol? Because one of them is really bad so will it work on the oily brush?

  • Hello. In our microbiology class, we always disinfected our equipment and tables using 70% alcohol. Furthermore, even hospital alcohol wipes that we use before giving injections are 70% isopropyl alcohol. Using 99.9% evaporates too quickly for it to effective kill bacteria; alcohol with water works much better. I will most certainly try this!

  • I don't like the creepy face in the window!!

  • @vmoon09 oh my gosh!! i just saw that!! what is that? that is really scary!!

  • @vmoon09 Oh yeah I see it too! A tiny face just to the right of the lock on the door, or whatever it is below the handle. It's like an old witch woman's face staring out from the bushes! Creepy!

  • @vmoon09 Agreed it creeps me out! It wasnt until you mention it!!!! :((

  • @vmoon09

When you said that I couldn't stop staring at it!

  • @GarrIsLovable Um, I can't see a face!! Where is it?! *scared*

  • @vmoon09 there are three of them!! :-O

  • @vmoon09 OMG I read your comment and I was looking for it for like a good minute and when I finally found it it scared the everloving Pi** outta me :O

  • @vmoon09 oh my gosh! darn! i wish i hadn't seen a comment below about it! cos now that is just creepin' me right out! someone below said they watched it 5 times & still don't see it. it's in the window pane. probably a shadow formed by the leaves. but seriously, it's like, a perfect face!

  • @vmoon09 yeah..i saw three creepy faces..

  • @vmoon09 WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!! WISH U HADNT COMMENTED

  • Dosen't the high content off alcohol dry out the brushes? And what's your opinion how you should dry them, should they be lying down or "haning upside down"?

  • Great Tip, Can i use 70% to clean my brushes?

  • i am unable to find 99 % alcohol here !!!

  • Thank you very much! This is a great tip and I just purchased the spray online for my makeup, too. Somehow I missed that tip the first time I watched your video. Love your tips! Colette

  • Thanks for the awesome tip Wayne - I will use nothing else to clean my brushes again but 99 % alcohol!

  • I used 91% rubbing alcohol last night to clean my brushes and it got all the gunk out, especially my concealer brush which was gross. I'm really bad at washing my brushes because using soap or brush cleaner and water just takes way to long and I'm impatient that way. And my brushes didn't take on that alcohol smell, except for my large kabuki brush but it was very faint. Thanks Wayne!

  • It worked! I got the 99% from Wal-mart :)

  • This was very helpful.

This is what I do and I was confused if I was right or wrong.

Question, Could I spray the 99% alcohol on to powders as such to disinfect since it would evaporate into the shadow? Or is that a big no no?

I just dont really see an issue because I use the Alcohol to fix broken shadows too......please help =)

    thanks!

  • so, is rubbing alcohol fine to use? and if you're only doing your own everyday makeup, how often should you clean your brushes? i know you said in the desrciption it's entirely up to us, but i just got a brand new set of brushes today and i'm wondering how often most people clean theirs.

    love your videos! :)

  • is it just rubbing alcohol like in the u.s?

  • If you don't rinse the brushes afterwards, wont the alcohol dry out your skin?

  • Hi Wayne,I'm a medical student and I just wanted to tell you that 70% alcohol is better disinfectant than 100% alcohol. Also, it's best to keep the brushes in alcohol for like 25min for disinfection (this does not sterilize brushes). Although, I don't know if this would ruin the bristles..:S

  • @belleloulou

I read about this online, but I was skeptical because after all, I am getting this information from online sources. LOL

But, I'm assuming 70% is more effective as a disinfectant because it contains more water than 90% alcohol.

  • Alcohol causes protein to coagulate on contact, a 100% solution coming into contact with a microorganism creates a hardened protein wall around the outside of the organism, rather than permeating into its interior. Because microorganisms can be very resilient, this protein shell only causes dormancy rather than death. At a purity of 70%, however, the alcohol causes coagulation to occur more gradually, slowing down the microorganism from the inside out.

  • @belleloulou

70% alcohol causes coagulation to occur more gradually because it contains more water than 99% alcohol.

  • ur best video ever for me !!! lolzzz

  • erm, is that a ghost looking out in the reflection of your window?

  • I am going to clean my brushes now! Thanks!

  • BRILLIANT!

    I mean it!

    I'm so impatient.

    This is borderline genius!

  • This is so cool I'm def going to do this now:) thanks

  • Hi Wayne, in your video about cleaning your makeup, you were using rubbing alcohol/ isopropyl alcohol- I noticed now you're using Beauty So Clean. Which one is better in your opinion? I've heard many people say (and I think you may have even mentioned it in that video) that Beauty So Clean is essentially the same as the isopropyl alcohol but it just has added fillers and emollients so it's not as harsh.

  • @keeyei i found out beauty so clean is basically iso. alcohol and hand sanitizer, i wasted my money, i hope he finds this out too, yeah but now i just mix the 2 in a botl and spray it :)

  • hey quick question..when u dip powder brushes or thicker, face brushes in the alcohol do u just swirl it in and squeeze out the excess then rub on a towel also? and is it safe to use meth spirits because we can't get 99% alcohol retail in australia? THANKS

  • @mizeurasia10, you can get 99.9% alcohol from Scotty's makeup and beauty, and i'm sure from other beauty supply stores such as Hub makeup, but google Scotty's makeup and beauty, they sell online, but are loacted in broadway sydney, i bought alchol from them today, 250ML for $8.00...if your interested.

  • @wendowasher eeeek I hadn't noticed that! Wayne what IS that creepy face reflecting in the window?!! X

  • does it matter if it's rubbing alcohol like isopropyl or methylated spirits? will that dry out the bristles?

    Thanks!

  • Do you clean concealer mini-brushes as well? Like those of Clarins Eclat Minute Concealer.

  • AFAIK, diluted alcohol is better at disinfecting than straight alcohol.

  • The face in the window is creeping me out!!!!!!!

  • so.. if you disinfect ur makeup every time after using it, would they still expire?

  • can you use this method on a brand new brush, instead of having to clean them with soap and water????

  • Now I know what to purchase the next time I go to Target. Love these great tips!!!

  • you said beauty so clean was a waste of money

  • Can you do a tutorial on how to clean your makeup? My friends like me to do their makeup and if they dont have their own I want to know how to clean up mine.

  • Wayne,

I would like to know what brush cleaner is similar to the Metasolv that's sold in the U.S. Thanks.

  • @2msdiva1 its just the target brand Up & Up I got it in the first aid section. So far I've been using it for about a month now and I have found it does a great job of cleaning my smaller brushes with no drying out. It still takes a while (a few hours) for my bigger brushes to dry with it though. As for tea tree oil, I find that it can be very drying/abrasive. My brother used to put it on his cystic acne, when he was desperate because it really worked but it would also burn/irritate.

  • can we clean our brushes with just regular alcohol instead of buying designated formula to clean brushes?

  • WOW, I would love to have this product for my brush cleaning. I use soap and water and it takes forever for my brushes to dry, not to mention all the time it takes me to clean them. It appears that this is only sold in the UK. Could you tell me what a good equivilent to this product would be that's sold in the US?

  • @blessedbga perhaps "rubbing alcohol" or vodka ;)

  • @blessedbga It's just rubbing alcohol

  • @blessedbga wwwulinecom/BL_6718/Isopropyl-Alcohol ive been using this method since he recommended it and i love it!!! they sell 99% and 70% but ofcourse 99 is better as he stated, i also found out the it doesn't alter the color when i press pigments, or loose shadows, 70% does because of the water in it, and ofcourse powdered shadows and water r a no no but i guess most ppl dont notice b/c they didn't pay attention, but i've went on a scavenger hunt and this is what i found, hope this helps!

  • @blessedbga It's alcohol. You can find it in any drugstore or supermarket in the US. Usually in the first aid isle - near the hydrogen peroxide.... If you want the huge size you would have to Google "99% Alcohol 5gal" size or something, but that is A LOT!

  • Hey Goss....I live in Jamaica...and I find a problem getting the 99% grade alcohol...what else can i use that would dry just as quickly and clean the brushes well?.....Thank you

  • @queenpaul09 it works just as well but takes slightly longer to dry. about 5 mins.

  • I Love your little wink!!!! Xxxxx ^_^

  • I see that it works for brushes used for eyeshadow...but will it give the same clean for brushes loaded with foundation??? Please advise. Thank you

  • Is this safe to use on all brushes? Won't the alcohol dry out the brushes?

  • will it dry out my brushes?

  • @suziheslop I would guess not. He said he has brushes he's been treating this way for years and they're still in good condition. I was worried about that, but I really hate waiting for my brushes to dry.

  • wont the alcohol loosen the glue that keeps the hairs in place?

  • The product you are showing is not 99% alcohol. its actually Metsolv which is a degreaser used to clean brushes. It is a blend of oxygenated & paraffinic solvents.

  • Just purchased 99% alcohol. Washed eye shadow brushes, foundation brushes, powder brush.. All came out clean! Downside? The place smells like alcohol, lol. Thanks for the great tip! By the by, my eye shadow brushes have dried while typing this (;

  • omg goss i love you :D i bought a bottle of 91 % alcohol put a dirty brush in swirled it took it out wipped and BAM it was super squeaky clean :D i will never use baby shampoo to deep clean them again

  • @Livingmydyingdreams So all he used and you used was just alcohol??

  • Comment removed

  • don't you have to rinse the brushes off with water after you put them in alcohol?

  • Oooh I have 99% alchol I a sooo going to try this tomorrow. Does this also work on very thick dense brushes like kabuki brushes?

  • @QueenPaul09 i just tried it my think face brushes and it works :D the only thing is it takes longer to dry then eye brushes

  • @Livingmydyingdreams OK thanks hun=-)

  • thank you I realy appraise it bye.

  • Very helpful tip! Thank you very much. I will go and buy a nice, big bottle of alcohol :D

  • THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR VID BUT IN THE WINDOW NEXT TO YOUR SHOULDER LOOKS LIKE A GHOST IN THE WINDOW I CANT STOP LOOKING AT IT LOL

  • Your makeup tips are awesome! Thank you for all your videos:-)

  • Wayne youre awesome and u have the best tips! Im gonna go get some 99% alcohol now!

  • Hi!

1:Can you show us how you clean your pressed powder products and cream produtcs such as cream blushes?

2:How do I store my makeup? I'm thinking about tempature and humidity. I'm living in Tel Aviv where the humidity is veru high. My MAC cream blushes have drops on them (!)

  • @Neel88 There are traincases you can get that specifically keep out humidity. They're used by makeup artists when they're working outdoors to protect their stuff. My boyfriend got me one on eBay, and it works amazingly well.

  • @PowderedPeach Thanks! I will check ebay.
