It's written in Hokkien because we felt it was a very cute dialect, where the aunties could sound catty, but not harsh nor rough. Mandarin would have been too refined for this setting.
The idea started over a discussion we had over teh tarik one evening. How Chinese moms always criticise their kids, to the point that even when they're boasting about their kids' achievements - they are doing it like it's a criticism. That's just our way.
I used to, but I already left at the time of conception for this ad. My friend (the one who conceptualised the ad) was still working there at the time.
This ad was a brainchild between a Malay girl (who conceptualised it) and a Chinese girl (who wrote it). And it was directed by a Chindian film director who could speak Hokkien. Talk about "muhibbah" in true Petronas form. I can say this because I am the Chinese girl who wrote the first draft that was presented to the Client. We're extremely proud of this ad, and very glad that it has touched many heart strings.
I was especially touched by the Petronas Advertisment. I want to share with the world this video. It's meaningful. However, what dialect are they speaking?
Money can't buy love. The Chinese are obsessed with wealth to the extend many neglected their roles to bring up their child and instill the Confucious virtues in them. Lawyers, bankers, doctors etc mean nothing to the parents if all the former can provide is money - not love

the story is a simple and yet powerful reflection of what it is now. very touching... in our pursuits of wealth and tangible position, we tend to ignore the basics of good family and, in particular our truest role as children. i'm sad that i, too, ignored my role. will visit and attend to my parents' needs more often.

Petronas seriously supply good Tv ad. But they are not invented by *petronas staff*. The advertisement are produced by prestigious good advertising agency (e.g. Leo Burnett for 2007 etc)

memang best la iklan ni, menyentuh perasaan. daripada cara makcik2 lain tu cakap dengan berlagak dan takde perasaan rendah diri, kita dapat bayangkan, macam itulah jugak cara anak2 mereka (tak semua la). makcik yg terakhir tu lemah lembut aje cakapnya, penuh kasih sayang, tu pasal anak dia sentiasa mahukan kehadiran ibunya walau dimana jua.

If anyone is wondering, I'm Chinese and from Singapore. And I am not offended by this ad at all. Most of our race are notorious money-grubbing motherfuckers who like to compare houses, cars, handphones, jobs etc.

It's written in Hokkien because we felt it was a very cute dialect, where the aunties could sound catty, but not harsh nor rough. Mandarin would have been too refined for this setting.
The idea started over a discussion we had over teh tarik one evening. How Chinese moms always criticise their kids, to the point that even when they're boasting about their kids' achievements - they are doing it like it's a criticism. That's just our way.

Hi all!
This ad was a brainchild between a Malay girl (who conceptualised it) and a Chinese girl (who wrote it). And it was directed by a Chindian film director who could speak Hokkien. Talk about "muhibbah" in true Petronas form. I can say this because I am the Chinese girl who wrote the first draft that was presented to the Client. We're extremely proud of this ad, and very glad that it has touched many heart strings.

Actually one of the old ladies spoke Teochew. 'Nou' for 'two' or 'five'. But Hokkien and Teochew are quite similar.

Money can't buy love. The Chinese are obsessed with wealth to the extend many neglected their roles to bring up their child and instill the Confucious virtues in them. Lawyers, bankers, doctors etc mean nothing to the parents if all the former can provide is money - not love
